My friend and I have some basic knowledge with woodworking, metalworking and a bit of electronics, what would be the best and cheapest way to go about a Tri or Quad-copter?
We know nothing about these, where can I learn more?
[editline]23rd May 2012[/editline]
We also want to mount a GoPro to it.
I've been reading through this thread again and I noticed everyone seems to be using the controller boards from HobbyKing; has anyone got experience with using the Ardupilot controller board? Anyone have a link to some guides that use them?

I don't think there is any bigger differences from a HK board, regarding the installation of cables and such. The difference probably lies in the firmware they use, their speed and so on.
In other news, I have made a temporary landing gear for the helicopter. Coke cans.
Thourght it was time to revive this thread, how is your project going Swebonny? Would love to see an update.
I just uploaded my new video aswell! Two Tri-copters in the air at the same time.

Now put lasertag guns on 'em and have dogfights.
I finally got around to ordering the other half of my tricopter parts, it was $150. I got it from hobbyking though, so I don't expect them until about august.

So, have they arrived?
Also, I stepped on my quadcopter yesterday when I got up in the night to pee. So I'm ordering a new fram :v:
Have been designing an arduino copter.

Gonna finish my design and order the parts when I get some more time.

Man, these things are so awesome. I'd love to build one of these and get into this stuff, but I have no idea where to start. I have no knowledge of electrical engineering or anything like that. I know software, not hardware (C/C++ Server Software Engineer here).
I could probably program a Arduino or something similar to make it work. Perhaps even something automated, but I don't have a clue how to do the hardware side of things.
It's awesome seeing you guys with them.

Ever complete it?

Wow, I forgot about this thread. And no, they haven't arrived yet. Every single part I ordered except for one is being held at the warehouse. And the kicker is, the one thing that's holding up my entire order is a pack of 5 servo leads.
Ever complete it?
Haha not yet, I'm working on super slow mode. I never managed to get a good grip on flying the original wooden frame copter that I built first. I got some videos of it flying really wobbly, which I'm hesitating to upload. And then I stepped on it...
So I ordered the carbon fiber frame that was posted way back, and it's done and all. Except I now need some motor mounts because my motors (Turnigy 2209) has this shaft that's sticking out of the rear so it doesn't fit the motor mount.
I'll get this thing flying and taking pics of my house 100 meter above me I swear.
Hi, so during the next few months i'm thinking about making a tricopter or a quadcopter, it seems like the wii controller powered ones might be the best way to go for me, does anyone have any experience with them?
OP apparently does but this thread has a higher mortality rate than neckbeards at a prom so it might take a while to get any information.
I've wanted to get into this for a long time but the FPV systems were well expensive. I think once I go back to school and start getting EMA again il look into starting just buildin something that works. I love building shit.
Roughly how much money do you tend to spend when learning? I'm in the UK so what are the best resources for parts, in the past I've used Maplin Electronics for stuff like custom audio adapters and such.
Well, I decided that waiting any longer for something as simple as a servo extension was bullshit, so I canceled that part of the order, and ordered some along with this plane.

Personally I would've gone with the Easy Star. Essentially the same platform but there's much more documentation about modifying and upgrading it.

I would have, but I couldn't find a RTF Easy Star for under $180. This is mostly for messing around to see if I like flying planes, so I wanted something cheap. If I like it, then I might look into getting an Easy Star or a similar platform, but I decided that I wanted to try it out first.
[editline]14th August 2012[/editline]
Also I wanted a RTF plane because I will already be spending a lot of time into putting that tricopter together.
I guess I'm just used to hobbyking's incredibly slow shipping process, because I was surprised when I logged onto my E-mail and found out that my plane will arrive tomorrow. It's too bad I'm going to be camping until Saturday.

i remember when i was 12 or 13 i wanted to build an rc helicopter with three rotors, like the flying things in terminator, but at the time the gyros and such were obscenely expensive and not that great anyway
maybe that's something i can finally attempt to do in the near future
I just built a potato cannon. Would be awesome to build tri-copters cheap enough to use for moving target practice, though that's probably not gonna happen.

Nevertheless, this looks interesting as fuck, OP's video was cool.
Could you attach a small loudspeaker to one of these? :v:
I flew my plane for the first time today. I had no idea what I was doing my first flight, so I just barely put it down without nosediving into a busy roadway. I flew it 2 more times, and on the second landing I crashed and yanked the motor mount out of the plane.
It went better than expected.
Here is how it looks.

It should be much more stable than the wooden one. And should be much more sturdier too.
Are counter rotating blades a standard or is that something you did for stability?

Nice. Have you flown it yet?
