To save some energy, don't plant your feet on the ground and make a big THUMP after every step. Let your heels hit the ground first and make as little sound with your feet as possible.
You don't necessarily NEED to land on your heels; in fact, most people I know (me included) land on their midfoot. However you're most comfortable running is generally the best to stick with. Unless of course you seem more prone to injury and all that junk.
Eat bananas to prevent side-aches.
And this. The potassium in bananas help prevent cramps and the like.
Don't give up. Do your own warmup before, mine involves stretching and listening to songs and I rarely eat for about 4/5 hours before a race but different people have different preparations. Just keep pushing yourself, when you're practicing it's quite good to do sprints and then jogs. I can usually do 2 miles in about 6 - 8 minutes, but I've been running for about 6 years. Another tip never stop running and training it makes it harder to get back into. Good luck as well :)
Cross Country shorts are so sexy.
I've heard pickle juice helps with cramps. My friend drinks pickle juice before football games so I'd assume drinking it before a run would count too
Don't start off to fast and just keep going once you get to know how you cope with two miles you will be able to push yourself.
Try to enjoy it as much as you can, aim for a goal and achieve it.
