BTBAM <3. Get to go see them in Atlanta January 9th
Opeth are fucking amazing.
Though Opeth are indeed amazing, let's not turn this into an Opeth adulation thread. They are not the only progressive death metal band out their :P
While on the subject of progressive death metal, I'd like to share one of my favourites indeed:
Edge of Sanity

Personally I have really been loving Edge of Sanity lately. They are way awesome.
ONe of their albums is a concept album about a future where humanity has lost the ability to breed. It contains a single 40 minute song. It's called Crimson and it is ridiculously awesome.
He(Dan Swano, god of sweden) even made a sequel to Crimson called Crimson II with 44 seamless songs.
The workhorse and driving force behind Edge of Sanity is Dan Swano.

He has been is so many bands it's ridiculous. He plays guitar, drums, bass, keyboard, and sings and I'm sure there is more.
All of Edge of Sanity's other works are awesome.

Atheist > Everything in this thread. Really the only worthwhile technical death metal band along side Gorguts.
Progressive death metal is typically gay. Hence why Cynic is in that category. Focus is horrible, and Traced in Air isn't any better.

You guys are overwhelming me with affection. Hehe. Stop it. <3
everyone step out of the way. this guy listens to real metal...
Opeth is practically the band that got me into death metal.
When you're into progressive rock, you get exposed to a lot of new bands.
And I'll just leave this here:

Now, if you're going to mention Egde of Sanity, you should've mentioned his Moontower project - Moontower is def. one of the best albums to have been made.

I don't know if I would call BTBAM progressive death metal. But I love them oh so much.

Well, I was speaking less about Dan Swano and more about Edge of Sanity, but yes Moontower is freaking amazing.
It's like if Rush played death metal.
Opeth is an awesome band. Have been into them for about 2 years.
Can you guys tell me the best Opeth song? Because I really want to get into them.
Can you guys tell me the best Opeth song? Because I really want to get into them.
Well depends on what type of music you like. If you don't mind death metal and growl vocals I suggest starting with Blackwater Park. If you do not like death metal/growled vocals I suggest starting with Damnation.
Where is atheist anyway? Atheist really is probably the best band in this thread(If it was put in).
I say replace it with BTBAM, and you got yourself credibility.
Opeth are amazing.

Are you and Human=Garbage the same people? You both act with a sense of "I know everything" not found else where.
'Progressive' is a label a band should earn. Just because you can play a funky sounding rhythm in 5/4 and 7/4 doesn't make you progressive.
In Mourning is definately worth checking out.
I've taken some interest in Opeth. I have to say, they are incredible. BTBAM also seems to be kickass and Cynic as well. Haven't heard much about the others on that list though. My only problem with death metal bands are their vocals. Try as I might, I haven't been able to adjust to them. I love the instrumentals, but the vocals are a turn off for me. BTBAM in particular. I'm hoping I can get over this though; these are some incredible bands. But hell, if I couldn't adapt to new music and be open-minded, I wouldn't listen to most of the music I do listen to nowadays.

I know what you mean. Good luck in getting used to BTBAM's vocals. I can't do it.
The first death metal song I got used to was Hypocrisy's Eraser. I love Peter's vocals in that song.
If you're already into Opeth, though, then stick with Opeth. In time, the harsh vocals will become natural to your ears. (Also, and this is my own opinion, listening to the song with the lyrics makes it so much easier to get used to harsh vocal styles)
I've only started listening to Instant Suppression today and am already loving their music. The new album is kickass, and even more kickass how it was released free. I wonder how their songs will play on an Audiosurf track.

BTBAM's vocals are very hard to get used to. Stick to Opeth, Akerfeldt has a truly amazing voice in everything he does. His singing, his harsh vocals...it all has a special way of delivering itself in a manner which could not be any more perfect for where it is in any of Opeth's songs.
I decided to go ahead and check out Cynic. So I went and got Focus; I must say, I like it more than I thought I would. The vocals didn't put me off as much as I thought they would. I didn't find them all that harsh in the fist place. Overall, I'm liking them so far. And yeah, I'll be sticking with Cynic and Opeth until I adjust to the vocals.
The instrumentals in both bands and the fact that Opeth changes up their songs with techniques such as softer acoustic interludes makes them interesting to listen to.

Wouldn't really call SYL progressive but they are the definition of awesome & ANGRY. Devin's solo stuff is a bit more progressive but not really death metally. Although his album Deconstruction, which is comming out in May may be a little death metally and complex etc.

BTBAM has a great vocalist, but there's a lot of work to adjusting to his vocals if you aren't used to the more "core" styled punk vocals found in bands like Converge and such. For me, the vocals are the best parts of most death metal albums these days.

Agreed.
Though I'm a big fan of chugging riffs, pounding doublebass, and melodic piano, as well.
