Because post WW2 we've been stuck in a defense-centric economy and have buried ourselves so deep in it there's really no easy way back out.
And they're not necessarily [I]gun-toting [/I]idiots, you wouldn't see a US politician deploy to fight the war.

On a more topic-related note: This is actually good, since the goddamn shuttle was supposed to have been put to sleep two decades ago. Finally NASA will be able to move on, at least until the next administration dedices to create a Morlok spaceship that blows up twice for the sake of filling two extra job positions in Utah.

I was at a beach north of Cape Canaveral, if the shuttle launched it would of been an amazing sight to see.
