To the people wondering how imgur is displaying .jpg files as .gifs, it has nothing to do what the previous page was telling you, so just disacknowledge that.
Browsers use something called a MIME type association (where MIME actually stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, but today has very little to do with mail) to determine how to handle files your browser is requesting. Changing the MIME type of any named file in the response header can and will change how the browser processes what you've looked up. So a file requested called forum.aids with a MIME type of image/gif would display the .aids file as a .gif in your browser.
