The Official Questions Thread Version: "Charlies in the trees, what do I need to get rid of them?"

My flashlight is bright, in a good position, and has a pressure switch. Its staying. No room for peq and it serves no purpose to me. And I had a crane stock but euhhg no. LE stock is much better.
Hurf, there's no point in asking for suggestions on what to add to your rifle when you're adamantly defending everything on it. Sounds like it's done to me lol.
Hey biscuitman, do you have a recommendation for preferable brand for crane stock?
G&P have always been good to me. IIRC they have some milspec and not-so-milspec offerings, but are generally the most realistic. I would give KA or VFC crane stocks a go as well but no personal experience with them. Back in my youth I was big into the CA cranestocks as they were the first of any quality, but now I've realized they're comically oversized.
Otherwise, I've always been curious about the china crane stocks with LMT trades. They're dirt cheap so I'm hesitant, but I'd definitely like the chance to get a look at one.
I actually have an offer made on one of those Chinamade LMT marked ones. May end up going through with it if the counteroffer is low enough. Any idea where to find a G&P in stock? I haven't had much luck.
Not a clue. I have one sitting around that I got from Herf, funnily enough, that I'm saving for a rainy day (aka if I ever find a VFC SR16 CQB at a good price) but now that I have a non-AR I might end up giving in and selling it someday.
Let me know if you do, I need one.
"First chose the hardness that fits your application. It is recommended to use 70 duro for guns over 400 FPS and 40 duro for guns under 400 FPS. This is actually more of a suggestion as using 40 duro in a 400+ FPS gun will be quieter than a 70 and reduce shock load more but at the cost of longevity"

and always go for 1/4 inch thickness
Okay, word. Now last thing, the ones im seeing, some have holes, some have little half circles cut out? Should i just get the solid ones?
They should be labelled for what gearbox it's for. I would assume the PKM would use a standard V2/V3 one, but wait on killer to confirm
Are there scopes with built-in rangefinders?
So I've been thinking about Airsofting for a long time, and now that I'm finally moving back to the states, I've decided It's time.
I've read the guide megathread, and I was wondering if what I've picked out would be some good starting equipment.
My budget is about 500 dollars, and What I'm not spending in the list will probably be used on clothing.
(Which is another question I have, What's Best type of clothing, camo, or general loadout for an area like Austin Texas?)

If you're willing to pay $650+ for an optic for airsoft, then yes

Not bad, though a few suggestions. You might want to consider a different optic, since those knind are generally seen as "nooby". It's not that important at all, but its just something to consider. You could also just forgo optics entirely, since they arent that important in airsoft. If youre dead set on getting an optic though and would like to spend a little less money, I recommend this:
http://www.evike.com/products/26698/
I've had that for over 2 years and have had it on my main rifle the entire time and it still works, the batteries in it are just dead.
Another thing is you can get Desert Locusts for A LOT cheaper on ebay. Like so:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-USGI-Revision-Desert-Locust-Goggles-Foliage-Green-/251516752724?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a8f911354
Other than that, the only think I can think of is you might want to consider a different battery charger, but I'm not as familiar with those. Good choice of gun though, thats usually our go-to starter gun.
As far as gear, it looks like you have just over $100 left to spend maybe less considering shipping for your order. What you do there depends up to you, though if you want something thats cheap and works, you could just get an ALICE setup, which you could buy the components for at any surplus store in the US. Camo also depends on the field. Have you looked up the ones in the Austin area? If the field is indoor, or just an open field/speedball type of field, camo doesnt really help that much since there isnt really anything to blend into, but if the field is in woods, you might want to get M81 (generally just called Woodland Camo), which again can be bought for cheap at a surplus store

Also, good on you for actually reading the megathread and not just making your own thread asking questions that would have been already answered there, unlike other people who have come here
Which is the part on the lot number on US equipment that shows the date of manufacture?
The one legit ALICE mag pouch i have has a bunch of '90's and a '91' amongst the info on the inside of the top flap but I'm not sure if it's that old.

swap out that charger and battery for
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6478__IMAX_B6_AC_Charger_Discharger_1_6_Cells_GENUINE_.html
and two of
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__37846__Turnigy_nano_tech_1200mAh_2S_25_50C_Lipo_AIRSOFT_Pack.html
not only is all of that cheaper, but youll get a higher quality battery(x2) that will increase your rate of fire, and last longer. Trust me, lipos are not hard to use at all. You plug in the balance lead, plug in the main leads, set the charger to charge at the miliamp rate- in this case 1.2a- and then set it to 7.4v/2 cell. Press start and itll beep and stop charging when its done.
If you had a 2300mah 11.1v lipo, you would set it to 2.3a and 11.1v/3 cell.
Theres really no way to burn your house down unless you take a knife, stab the battery a bunch, and then leave. the charger will doublecheck that you have it set for the righr voltage before you charge.
Lotta words
Awesome, Exactly what I was looking for. I'll take a mental note of the changes and do some research when I land there. Never been to a surplus store.
Also another question, Would it be worth modding this gun at such a novice level?
or should I wait until I understand the components a bit more?
As for the reading the megathread, I've been stalking this whole subforum for a very long time, but never bothered to make posts as
There would really be no point (living in Australia and all). But I appreciate the comments and information :>
wait til you understand it a bit more before you start upgrading.
[editline]2nd May 2014[/editline]
the only upgrade you may want to do right away is a new motor. the stock motor in those guns is a little weak. its literally the easiest upgrade you can do, all you do is unscrew the two screws on the bottom of the pistol grip, disconnect the wires, pull out the motor, put your new one in, and then you just reconnect the wires and screw it back together.
Motor Editz
How much does a new decent motor usually run?
$40-$60
$40-$60
Is the performance benefit worth that much? Also Back to the surplus store, How much would you say it would cost to get a minimal loadout? So like shirt, pants, belt, maybe a helmet/hat or something?
They should be labelled for what gearbox it's for. I would assume the PKM would use a standard V2/V3 one, but wait on killer to confirm
yeah the PKM uses a standard M4 cylinder head so the fully round pad with the hole in the middle
Are there scopes with built-in rangefinders?
the PSO and G36 integrated optic if you're a cool guy and know how to work a stadiametric rangefinder
why would you need a rangefinder for usually 200 foot at max combat though
So what ammo weight you do guys use in your secondary's?
Is the performance benefit worth that much? Also Back to the surplus store, How much would you say it would cost to get a minimal loadout? So like shirt, pants, belt, maybe a helmet/hat or something?
I would say its worth it to get a new motor right off the bat. Maybe dont get an optic and instead get the motor.
and for the surplus store question

so roughly $30 for the bare minimum. prices may vary store to store though. Generally, its about that. You can get a BDU set of M81 or 3-colour desert for about $30, maybe less if you look on ebay, then a boonie or patrol cap would cost you around 15, or you could get a replica helmet for around 30. Basically roughly $100 if you want ALICE, BDU's and a helmet.
So what ammo weight you do guys use in your secondary's?
I use 0.20, don't you need/want heavier.
So what ammo weight you do guys use in your secondary's?
I use .25s for everything except my LM4, which I use .3s
I have one gun that is a mix and match of compression parts and all my others are all lonex. guess what one gun has compression issues on occasion, while the rest are all +/- 1 fps?
So yeah, compression parts should always be the same brand.
Little late on the reply but my M60 has a mix of parts from various manufacturers and after properly adjusting the components to fit I've never had compression issues. Using all parts from one manufacturer may increase the likelihood of it fitting perfectly, but even amongst parts from the same manufacturer deviations within acceptable tolerances can create gaps. If you're willing to open up your gearbox to work on it, then greasing O-rings (replacing as needed, I've found that a #14 from a hardware store properly lubricated will fit just about anything) and shimming with teflon tape shouldn't be a big deal. I've had much more trouble with the craptastic air nozzle, which being proprietary (longer than normal) can't be easily replaced.
As far as spring guides go, I have never heard of a spring breaking due to torsional stress (and if it did, I'd blame the spring, because airsoft is pretty low-stress as far as mechanical applications go) so I cannot see what difference your choice of spring guide could possibly make. If there's one part that definitely does not need to be name brand, it's the part that does nothing but hold the spring in place and rotate slightly while firing. Spending fifteen bucks on a steel tube that does nothing different from the stock part is a complete waste of money.
I don't mean to single you out or question your experience- I have no doubt that if you just put parts together and test without further adjustment that all parts from one manufacturer will be better than a mix. But a lot of airsofters overspend on things they don't need when they can make what they have work fairly easily, and there are some parts that have such utilitarian, simple functions that the brand really doesn't matter.
Anyways, Lt. Munch, I totally forgot about the gearbox weirdness of the A&K LMGs in my last post. If the PKM works the same way as the M60, and I suspect it does, you'll need a stronger spring than you anticipate to get the desired FPS, since these gearboxes are longer and don't compress the spring as much as a V2 or V3. An M140 works fine to get about 390fps with an M60 with the stock parts, but if you have access to various springs (a local shop, or a tech friend) it'd be wise to try a variety and see what muzzle velocity you get. You can also add spacers to the spring guide block if need be to move the spring guide forward, which will increase your muzzle velocity slightly, so you should be able to get it to exactly the muzzle velocity you want. Changing your compression parts and the hop-up bucking could also have an effect, so it's hard to make any concrete recommendations, but if anything I'd say get an M140 and adjust as necessary from there.
Is the performance benefit worth that much?
Motors, on the other hand, are a part of the gun where how much you spend definitely matters. Your motor doesn't just dictate rate of fire, it also dictates trigger response, power draw, and heat build-up, which not only affect the effectiveness of the gun but also the longevity of other parts. Don't try to cheap out on a motor, but do some research to find what the best motor for your application would be since even within a given price point there's a massive variety in behavior and quality. I'm sure others here have specific recommendations.
I use .20s in my Glock, .25s in my WOC, and .30s in my SVD. What secondary are you running?
TM Hi Capa 4.3
Internet provided me with mixed results. While a lot of people prefer to use .25's in both weapons, there were those who prefer .23.
I'm not too familiar with TM GBBs, but if it's like their AEGs, you'd be best off with .20s.
I run .28's or .30's across the board, depending on whatever I have
I didnt buy mini deans leads because Im a dumbass. Would balancing with a mini deans to mini tamiya adaptor and the normal balancing cable be a dumb idea?
