The 10 Dimensions (in easy-to-digest youtube form)

Science never ceases to amaze me.
Baaad oversimplified unscientific video.
The whole point of the video is to be simple and have as few terminologies as possible.
It's meant for everyone, not scientists and people hardcore interested in it.
Little harsh comment there, for what it tries to explain of demensional mechnics, it does an ok job, it's a good way of easing people into this, it only becomes complicated when you start to consider reasons better than: "It's simple logic" explain to me with maths why something in the 3rd dimension could not appreciate movement in the 5th dimension. If you can't, don't take a crack at basic teaching, you don't teach a six year old differential equations instantly then punch him in the face because he's confused.
What? I caught the beginning and ending of what you said there, but the middle is a little muddled.
Anyway, the "line, fold, branch, point" shit he constantly repeats only serves to confuse the issue and it's basically completely untrue. We live in three spatial dimensions. We move through time as a fourth dimension. It does okay up until then, but then he goes ahead and explains physical concepts as dimensions which actually have nothing to do with dimensions at all. Draw a line. Now draw one perpendicular to the last one. You now have a coordinate graph in two dimensions. Draw another perpendicular to these. You probably can't do this because you'd come off the page, but you have three dimensions. Draw another line perpendicular to the last three. You can't, but this is the fourth dimension that you would be drawing the line into. A fifth dimension would be perpendicular to those last four, and so on and so forth through 10 dimensions. Time is really no different, except that we perceive it in a strange way and constantly move through it in one direction for some reason.
The video clearly demonstrates itself to be poorly made when it says that all possibilities are contained in ten dimensions, given that recent theories point to space-time having eleven dimensions.

That's like saying I'm going to teach you the basics of physics and I start teaching you earth science. Regardless of the fact that it intends to simplify things, apparently its idea of simplification is being wrong.
I refuse to believe that an object can have a length but no width or depth.
This video doesn't explain anything.
I refuse to believe that an object can have a length but no width or depth.
There is no object with out width or depth in our world ... Our world or universe is 4D (or meybe 6-7) but there are object like that in a 2D or 1d world.
I'm pretty sure I saw this awhile ago.. Awhile ago as in 8 months ago or something.. I forget. But its been awhile.
It was an entertaining video to watch though, I think I'll watch it again..
Wait is that a clock?
What? I caught the beginning and ending of what you said there, but the middle is a little muddled. words
I'm saying, that we, here in this third dimension, where we observe three spacial dimensions, not time one, spacial ones, could not observe a 5 dimensional object in anyway, as it is mathematically impossble, like solving a pair of simultaneous equations with three variables, and I was asking if you could use a proof to explain why
Now someone needs to create something so we can use all these dimensions and Ill be happy.
As well done as this is, it is important to remember that this is more of a simplification that can allow people somewhat grasp the idea, and shouldn't be taken too literally.
In reality, it is impossible to understand it in detail without the math. Math is how we break down things that the human brain cannot comprehend into bits that it can comprehend. If you don't have the math, it's not happening, the human brain doesn't have the hardware necessary to process it in raw form.
This is why quantum physics isn't easily explained to the average person, it's pretty much past the point where the math requirement becomes completely unavoidable when trying to understand anything.

No, it's meant for the idiots who believe the shit they see without any logical explanation.
"hey guys 4th dimension is time i swear because i said so"
Personally I just imagine the dimensions as in stretching something in a particular direction, like stretch a point into a line, stretch a line into a plane, stretch a plane into a cube, stretch a cube into a timeline of the cubes life, stretch the timeline of the cube into all the possible timelines of the cube, stretch all the possible timelines then I don't know anymore lol

Still not making much sense.
The only thing I can say is that when he explain 0->1->2->3 d he explains it as things branching off, in reality points need to move through the plane without moving through themselves so you get a line, lines need to move without moving through themselves, you get a plane etc...
Welcome to 2007, may I take your coat?
Actually if you look on the video's original website, it's copyrighted 2006.
I just got brain fucked, thanks.
I understand up to9 but 10 kinda boggles me.
Still not making much sense.
Okay, i'm going to baby feed you from the gist of what he said. I hope i get this correct. We are three dimensonal beings. We live in the 3rd demension. We don't see or understand the 4th to 11th (or tenth) demension because it is non-existant in our world. It is there, but we cannot see it or interact with it.

I don't understand what he's telling me this for. I understand. He also said something about me having to prove something with math.
JohnnyMo1 is right as always. This video is not good at all.
I'm sorry but i find this to be ridiculous.
There is a 4th spacial dimension, look at this.

There are rules that can determine how higher dimensional objects are structured.

A rotating hypercube.

This video is a much better explanation of higher dimensions.
So Ants are beings from the 2nd dimension?
:psyboom:
The 10th dimension only has one dimension =O.

Why would time not be a spatial dimension?
Into extreme extrapolation? Into high-level physics? Into brain-masochism? Into all 3 like me?! Have a look.

The only real problems I have with it is that it doesn't explain why the 4th dimension is time (but just Google it and you can get a good explanation), and it doesn't go into why these ideas matter. If you want to know more, this is related to String and Superstring theories, the latter of which is sometimes called the "Theory of Everything" or M-theory... it also has 11 dimensions, so it's slightly different. This is just an overview.
You will appreciate this much more if you have a good understanding of Quantum Mechanics, by the way.
I know this is probably too educational a topic for most FP-kiddies, but someone should appreciate it.
wow i now know how to end the world and all exitence, thank you sir!.
I like to think of it in terms of Euclidean geometry.
A point is the definition of a location. A line is defined by two points. A plane is defined by three non-colinear points. A space is defined by 3 no-coplanar points.
Then I've always assumed a time is defined by 4 non-cospacial points and a 5th-dimensional object is defined by 5 (or 4?) non-chronological points and a 6th-dimensss....
Oh shit mindfuck.
Oh oh, and if Einstein was right, light is a 4th dimensional wave. Oh oh, and think about if our movement through the 4th dimension is determined by a force similar to gravity? :science:
All brainfarting aside, I watched this video a long time ago, and I still think that fucking around with calling things incomprehensible shit like splits and folds is patently ridiculous.
When was the last time you folded time? How the fuck do you fold time?
Why would time not be a spatial dimension?
Because it's a temporal dimension.
"Spatial dimension" basically means "not time."
These extra dimensions are just theory. It's nothing special to look at really.
