I can't comment on Chinese tourists, but in my home town we have a very large outlet mall that is a tourist spot for several Thai-Canadian tour agencies. During the spring and summer the town population doubles every day because of all the Thai-Canadians visiting. Locals call it the Canasian Invasion. They're general very nice, quiet, organized people, never and trouble.
Mainland tourists are some of the worst people you can encounter. They clog up our trains and streets with their milk powder filled luggages and LV bags. They push and shove like no tomorrow and have no respect for queues :/
see this is the thing. they're not exchange students. they're either first or second gen that have smuggled themselves into the country. not all of them of course, but a lot of people smuggle themselves out of fu zhou exactly because they're poor and want to get a better life
Driving brand new BMW M3s and Audis? Yeah the ones i'm referring to were absolutely poor then. To get an exchange at the Universities here you have to pay several times more tuition than the students who aren't from out of country. It's difficult enough to afford it being Canadian, it's impossible to afford it on exchange unless you're quite wealthy back home.
Yes I've lived in Beijing for 2 years and traveled quite a lot through China. The bad behavior you're noticing comes from people in rural areas that has barely interacted with people outside their own town.
How long have you guys been in China? How many cities and how many people did you interact with?
Stereotypes, while generalizations that don't cover an entire group, do exist for a reason Swebs, just remember that your personal experience can be very different from anyone elses. It just so happens to be that on a relatively consistent basis, the Chinese populace has proven to be quite the mess when it comes to this kind of thing.
I think it's fair enough to say that mainland Chinese culture might involve less 'manners' than people in the West or in other Asian countries are used to, but that still doesn't mean you can say "God, those mainland Chinese people are always just so rude!" because obviously, they're not all going to be like that. Clearly, this person here has a gripe with a specific set of people- now, I'm not sure that it's right that she's making such a point of them being Chinese, but it's still a certain group of people. Saying 'them wacky Chinese', imo, is bordering on racism.
China here. If any Chinese tourists are giving you trouble, they're probably from Taiwan. Thanks.
I think the biggest thing is people either are being too polite/don't want to bother telling them they're doing it wrong, or they don't have the ability to because they can't communicate it. I'm sure most of these people would change their habits outside of China if they were told what the customs were.
Chinese tourists' mannerism in other countries really is a problem.
Of course I don't mean all of them are that bad, just a lot of them.
They can shit on the floors, on the floor of the trains,
last time one of them even shat on the railway platform

do they not wipe afterwards?

You must have lived in the most angelic place in china.
Agitated thai women are so charming.
mainland chinese people are some of the most hated by other asian countries because they simply have no manners when it comes to visiting other countries (cutting in lines, pushing and shoving through a crowd, taking dumps on the side of the road, constant spitting)
Yeah, my grandmother stayed at a hotel in Tokyo, guess what, Chinese "tourists" just YELLING.
She said she's not going there again.
Now, they don't represent people from China in general, and I have friends from China which they find it irritating that people view their country as these people. But, I must say, it is an actual problem. China's tourism board had also acknowledge the problem itself, and even come up with notices letting them know how to behave overseas. This issue has also widened also because the fact that China tourists are currently the number 1 in the world, so of course you'll see some bad eggs.

I've had two main experiences with Chinese people. Firstly would be the rather huge population of Chinese exchange students at my university. They're usually quite shy towards anyone but other Chinese, and they'll generally really only make friends with and hang out with other Chinese people. I'm not holding that against them at all, it's only natural to gravitate towards your own countrymen when you're alone in a foreign country. The second was a succession of very rude people in my hostel dorm who woke us up several times throughout the night. Otherwise i've got not problem with most Chinese, infact i'm considering spending a month there later this year. Although i'm honestly worried since my expectations of chinese people have been coloured by my own limited exposure through the internet and will cause me to miss out on a potentially amazing country due to my own retarded prejudices in favour of something more shit.

tbh can't really blame international students banding together
their english is probably bad (or not as good as a native) and they're in an unfamiliar country, it's only natural they'd stick together with people who are familiar with their culture
All the times I can't park on the street in a Vancouver neighborhood because buddy puts a bucket or shit on the road so people can't park there. Any side road in Richmond that doesn't have a streetlight basically becomes a dumpsite at night and you can look at what the birds have picked out and tell exactly who left it there.
They also leave luggage EVERYWHERE. Like, you can go into one of the parking lots at YVR and you can find empty baggage ditched everywhere.
I work for a Hong Konger, can confirm he looks at mainlanders like dogs even though they are the same thing.
I still don't understand how you can say this. "Face it, a large proportion of X are entitled pricks who only care about themselves." Don't you see? But nevermind, I'll drop it here.
Perhaps my wording was a bit harsh. From my experience, a significantly higher proportion of mainland Chinese people have poorer manners than other demographics. They tend to care more about themselves and have little regard for others.
I'm not implying that they're all like that, nor am I implying that a majority of them are like that. Look at it this way: 10% of most people I come across on the street are assholes, whereas 20% of Chinese mainlanders I come across on the street are assholes. Therefore, based on my experiences, Chinese mainlanders are twice as likely to be assholes. However, 80% of Chinese mainlanders I come across are still perfectly normal people.
This is symptomatic of a generation who grew up poor and became rich, so I can't really blame them. It's a societal problem.
I've worked with a lot of Chinese in hospitality before and god damn they are rude to customers.

lmao you should try telling a hong konger that 'they are the same thing' and see what happens
should be fun
I feel more culturally enlightened by reading the posts in this thread
It's like people don't know what anecdotes are.
an old chinese guy broke the silence of the getty museum twice by farting
thats my anecdote
Face it, a large proportion of mainland Chinese are entitled pricks who only care about themselves. The situation shown in the video is far from being an exception. Chinese tour groups are especially obnoxious as they have the luxury of not having to live in whatever place they are visiting, so they don't feel like they need to respect the customs of wherever they are visiting. They talk loudly, they leave trash everywhere, they spit, they cut queues. It's sickening.
fucing entitled pricks only thinking about themselves when they should be thinking about me instead

This happens everywhere, how does this have anything to do with them being Chinese??

i've seen you mindlessly, stereotypically complaining about homeless, "gypsies"(that weren't even Roma) and chinese within 2 weeks now all while you go off to the fast threads section to complain about how miserable and shit your life is right now.
can you see the connection?

So my personal problems are related to this discussion how?
Also, are you STILL pissy over misinterpreting what I said about the hobo under an overpass in an SH thread? That was almost two months ago.

no I'm not pissy, your personal problems are related because you poject your disatisfaction with yourself and your life (as is evident from your posts) onto others to feel better, probably not even consciously.
