A superhero movie that actually admits how silly the genre is and doesn't take itself seriously?
This looks fucking awesome.
Looks like the anti-Man of Steel.
Almost all of the Marvel movies have been doing that pretty much, except Captain America 2 and Hulk.
I have high hopes for the soundtrack. Their song choices so far are pretty awesome.
Q: (For Gunn) Would you rather fight 1 Groot sized Rocket Raccoon, or 10 Rocket Raccoon sized Groots?
A: (Gunn) Definitely one Groot sized Rocket - Groot is way too powerful, unless the Groot sized Rocket has a huge gun, then I'm screwed. And he's not a raccoon.

And he's not a raccoon.

not a raccoon
Oh...

I feel like one of the real strengths of Marvel's approach is that it keeps everything within the reason of a crazy world, not like other superhero franchises where it just thinks "whatever, people don't care about suspension of disbelief, it's already cheesy" and just do a bunch of absurd shit that doesn't make sense. Marvel's Universe is much more believable by comparison.
Is it just me, or does Rocket not sound all that much like Bradley Cooper? Except for him saying "Oh yeah," it sounds like his voice got pitched up just a little.
I mean, it's not a bad thing, just an observation.
I saw some people rated my post up there funny.
Let me explain why it isn't.
The movie kind of relies on Rocket. Audiences need to accept him to take the film seriously at all. Depending on how the handle the "not a raccoon" thing. It could make or break the movie. I'm serious.
This makes me very worried.
One is the biggest reasons why the current GotG comics suck every dick they can find is how badly the characters are written. Mainly Rocket. He has this whole "hurrdurr im not a raccoon i just happen to be an alien that looks like one" bullshit going on.
It's a stupid ass joke that kind of ruined one of my favorite comic characters. It was the first of many AWFUL jokes they forced on the character. It tore apart his backstory and he became this mascot/comedy character. Something Rocket never was.
He was the backbone, the heart of the Guardians. He believed in their message harder than even Star-Lord did. When the team split up. Rocket sucked it the fuck up. He went out and formed his own team and inspired the rest to come back.
They never even mentioned he was a raccoon besides the odd line here or there. It wasn't part of his character and it shouldn't ever be.
Pointing out the fact that he is/isn't a raccoon bogs him down and makes him a joke.
All the stuff I said up there goes from "wow he gets shit done" to "pffft a raccoon is the leader now, this is fuckin' stupid"
If the fact he is/isn't a raccoon becomes a joke, Rocket goes from interesting character to Jarjar Binks 2: Electric Godfuckingdaamitaloo.
I hope the film is smart enough to only mention the "not a raccoon" thing once and only once.
Rocket needs to be handled with subtly for him to work even in the slightest. That's why I like him as much as I do, when he's written well, he works wonders.
The second he becomes a joke is the second the film/comic/whatever falls right on it's face.
It's a small thing, but it could ruin the character and maybe even the movie.
Oh...
That comment is poorly worded, but isn't he saying that Groot isn't a raccoon and not talking about rocket?
That comment is poorly worded, but isn't he saying that Groot isn't a raccoon and not talking about rocket?
Nope. He commented on it further on twitter.
"He’s no more a raccoon than human-looking aliens are human."
Which I hope doesn't imply "not a raccoon but he just happens to be an alien that looks like one"
But it probably does.
God dammit.

Also these are things
It's a small thing, but it could ruin the character and maybe even the movie.
No it couldn't.
"I'm not a raccoon I just look like one" would be a bit annoying and cringey depending on the context but it's not like that single statement would drop it to 4% on Rotten Tomatoes, even Cap 2 and Avengers had very bad lines at times
I guess I am blowing this out of proportion.
Also, I don't think I made it clear, if Rocket does end up as some jokey character, I won't hate the movie. Nothing could make me dislike this film unless it insults my intelligence or something, which it won't.
I seriously just don't want to see one of my favorite comic characters become the next Waypool. That would suck.
Starlord looks so fucking great.

Sorry but honestly the fact that he is a raccoon at all is already pretty wacky regardless of whether or not they call attention to it
Considering the tone of the movie, I wouldn't worry about it

didnt gunn already specify that rocket in this film was the result of genetic experimentation
[editline]22nd May 2014[/editline]
also in the trailer where rocket says "aint no thing like me cept me", that sounds like its probably a direct response to a statement that he looks like a racoon
[editline]22nd May 2014[/editline]
not sure if already posted but here's a pretty in depth interview with chris pratt giving a ton of cool details http://io9.com/chris-pratt-explains-why-rocket-raccoon-is-a-tragic-cha-1577267718
Who cares about all this I just want a cute scene where Groot talks to a potted plant

if anything, not calling attention to the fact that he's a walking talking raccoon and trying to play it completely straight without referring to it once would make it way worse than pointing it out once or twice ever could
The way Marvel movies go, they'll probably both play Rocket straight and make jokey-references to his racoonness. And if they pull it off right, it'll be fine either or both ways.
You can take the stupidest concept in the world and make something good of it with the right writing, direction, and performance. Or take the best idea and ruin it with the same.
So I'm eating my words over here. I take back all that stupid ass nerdy rambling I did up there about Rocket.
I'm reading the preview for this: (comes out May 28th by the way)
[t]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m5s_A3tOw0o/U380uP06bhI/AAAAAAAAFzU/OKvv5U0-HTs/s1600/GARGALPRE2014002-DC11-LR-63f39.jpg[/t]
Which can be read here.
And it has one detail that I am fucking stoked they have. Halfworld.
May not mean much to you guys, but that's the setting/homeworld of Rocket in the original 4-part series done back in the 80s. The very same series I got framed and hung on my wall.
All doubts I have about Rocket are just gone now and I feel like a moron for flipping out a few days ago. Sorry for that.
Random thing I found from the facebook Q&A I figure we'd all enjoy:
What was the all around emotion like when you got the call to play Star Lord in this huge Marvel movie? I was calm, I felt as though I knew I had an incredible amount of work to do and although I was feeling excited I immediately went into smooth operator mode and slowly starting chipping away at the mountain of work that I had in front of me. Also, I had a boner.

So apparently a third trailer's been classified recently as well
Might just be an alternate version of the current one
Bradly Cooper gettying into character:

That's a pretty late casting choice, I'm going to assume he appears in an after credits sequence again.

Holy shit, I didn't expect that. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

He appears in the main film, and he was cast a while ago, just they've only revealed it now.
[sp]He's also in Age of Ultron's post credit scene as well apparently[/sp]
