No, Dark Matter has mass. It is all the crap in the universe we can't see because it emits no light. It ranges from rogue hydrogen atoms to brown dwarves, or failed stars. We just can't see it because it doesn't emit any electromagnetic radiation, but we know it exists because galaxies have way too much gravity for the amount of mass we CAN see (ie. Stars and nebulae). Also, scientists at this point are 90% sure that the universe won't spring back and collapse, because some unknown force has caused the expansion to accelerate, whereas it should have slowed, if not reversed. We haven't a half-assed guess as to why this happened, but we names this force Dark Energy. Know the difference, it could save your life someday.

You're more knowledgeable on the subject than I, and so I concede defeat. You know, I wish I didn't age. I'd have all the time in the universe (Ha, ha) to study and learn and understand how the universe works. But because I've only got something like sixty or seventy years to live, that's a luxury I can't afford.
dude u can swear its not like ur moms watching or sometin
yes but i swear loosely as it is so limiting myself is better.
Of course, that all depends on whether einstein's space-time theory is true. In which case, molecules and even atoms are part of the same fabric, and so they stretch and contract WITH the rest of the universe. Even light.
Aww okay thanks for clarifying
My town's pretty good with this kind of thing. Back when I went to Sunday school I was the most knowledgeable about Catholicism out of everyone in the class. Later, one of the girls who was in it asked "If you know so much about Christianity why aren't you Christian anymore?" to which I replied "Because I know so much about Christianity."
Scientists have come up with ONE theory to explain how the universe can both expand AND contract. They say the fabric of space is made up of something called dark matter, which has no mass whatsoever. The theory came into being when the hubble telescope, while in motion, detected anomalies where empty space should have been - areas of space that seemed thicker than the rest. The resulting two endgame theories are as follows. The universe will expand to its limit, then spring back into a singularity, crushing all matter, Or the universe will expand to the point that the very fabric of it disintegrates, which would lead to all matter in the universe being literally ripped apart to a subatomic level.
Hmm, so I guess we're fucked.
ITT: my interesting and fantastic post was entirely missed.
ITT: my interesting and fantastic post was entirely missed.
Sounds kind of arrogant. [editline]07:12PM[/editline] okay that post was pretty awesome.
why are christians so intolerant of atheists we should round them up and kill them all that'll teach them to be intolerant
So this minor ordeal happened two years ago and you're just now bitching about it?
No, a similar ordeal happened the other day, in which a teacher wasn't qualified to say what she was saying.
why are christians so intolerant of atheists we should round them up and kill them all that'll teach them to be intolerant
there intolerant cuz there retarded duh!!
Teachers aren't allowed to share their religious or political views in my school.com
Separation of Church and State.
Schools in Northern Ireland are defined by either Catholic or Protestant majority, I go to a Protestant school (I'm atheist) and if you don't go to assembly (starts with religion) you are being "disobedient". Fucking born again christfags.
Make a big deal about it.

What the fuck? This is like the tenth time this has happened! One of my teachers will talk about something in school, then I come home and find a topic about it on FP! Anyways, today our teacher told us that it isn't his job to teach what religions believe, just what science believes. We are talking about the theory of Evolution. I think what he is doing is perfectly fine.
Religion and philosophy go hand in hand with each other and a religions class will go into philosophy and vice versa.
That's not true. Religions can be based on philosophy, but that doesn't mean a philosophy is a religion.
:suicide: I would honestly refuse to believe that the actual Jesus Christ walked into the room, I would think a Jesus imposter walking in to be more likely.
http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=903421
I have no tolerance for religion.
wah wah christians are ignorant mabye if you werent such a stupid annoying asshole faggot people in general would actually start to like you
This happened to me the other day, me and my friend were discussing that if someone believes that the afterlife is just nothingness, it doesn't make them an atheist at all. My teacher comes up, (assuming we are all Christian, cause who isn't) and starts a discussion on the philosophies of an atheist without the slightest knowledge of any of our religious beliefs, so she stands there, telling me what atheists believe (or don't believe rather), and I, an atheist, sit there uncomfortably.
Why didn't you say that you were an atheist? You're the reason so many people still think we're just a tiny minority that doesn't matter.
You can teach a minor about religious beliefs in a religious studies class, which I agree with. Religious studies are a very important part of history and can't be ignored.
Then put those parts in the history class. It's not like all talk of religion should be banned from school, and uttering the word would land you in detention, just don't keep an entire class for it. You can teach people about the crusades, the birth of religions along with achievements and tragedies related to them without having to deal with how David killed Goliath, the virgin births, or the discovery of the mormon golden tablets. None of these have anything to do with factual history and bear no significance in our society (Outside of the communities who worship these stories).
Then afterwards you go to the Catholic schools and fight each other right?
Nah, the catholic schools tend to fight eachother at the bus depot actually. noobs.
Religion IS in the curriculum in history, for most events (and wars) were influenced by religion.
There was probably thousands of men called Jesus at the time. What's the big deal?
Unusual that the majority of users here state that this type of problem is more common in America than in the United Kingdom. It certainly brings an interesting thought because America was actually built upon both the separation of state and church, and is clearly mentioned within the first amendment. While over here in the United Kingdom there is no such thing.
Religion IS in the curriculum in history, for most events (and wars) were influenced by religion.
There's a big difference between teaching... Christians went on the crusades because they believed in god and the pope or whatever told them to. and There is a god and he told Christians to go on the crusades to kill the Muslims for not believing in him. [editline]02:39PM[/editline] I think it would be fair to say that the world as we know it today would not exist, or at least things would be different.
guns dont hurt people hateful religious motivations do

Last week a substitute teacher at my school went off on some girl who wouldn't stand for the Pledge because it has "under god" in it. I only hope that sub gets fired. Even better, I hope "under god" gets removed out of the pledge and everything it shouldn't be on, like money.
