Somewhere between power metal, melodic death metal, and old school Thrash (Megadeth, Metallica).
I picked heavy metal.
Also, what's the goddamn difference between hip-hop and rap?
Hip-Hop is generally rap without the bullshit.
Not definite though, some rap is quite good and some hip-hop is quite shitty.

Hip-hop and rap are the same thing. White people just call the rap that they like "hip-hop" to make themselves feel better about liking it.
would dj shadow be considered hip-hop without rap

This is true
Collectively there are four elements of hip-hop
1.Deejaying (ex.DJ Shadow)
2.Rapping (ex.Rakim)
3.Writing (Futura 2000)
4.Breaking (ex.Lilou)
From the words of KRS-One: "Rap is something you do. Hip-hop is something you live."

What's the difference between heavy metal & death metal?
Death Metal typically has higher tempo downtuned guitar riffs, more vigorous vocals (typically growled) and more bass pedal driven drum beats.
I only listen to shoegaze and electrofolk bands.
