If you believe in this - the Illuminati is pretty much a religion/cult. Therefor Atheists are cleared of them, most other religions who don't believe in devil and crap... I'm not what you call a strong believer or a conspiracy theorist, but it's just too ignorant to completely write something like this off and think you know everything about the world. It's something a child would do.
You can't form your own opinion about it if you don't even know very much about it. And that is the most annoying thing in this thread. Some people are acting as if they have concluded from a scientific study that it is fake, or doesn't exist.
As for your question, Alfen, to put it very simply, the illuminati is supposed to be a world wide society of elite rich occultists who have a heavy influence on the various government around the world, as well as a heavy influence on world wide media. They use this influence to push forward their agenda in shaping the world into what they envision it should be.
There are many many side theories such as they believe they are descendants from alien reptilians, or that they are descendants from the offspring of jesus christ and marry magdalene, so on and so forth, but to put it in it's most realistic terms of what it actually is, with no bullshiting or stepping on anyone's sensitive toes, they are just an organization driven by a hunger for power.
You could go on and on about various conspiracies about them, but to say that such a society doesn't exist, especially when your argument is "how are they a secret society when they are mentioned everywhere" is just complete willful ignorance.

I dunno, I think you are making assumptions about the extent of their control.
To have some significant control over how the world functions, all you'd need is a handful of powerful people colluding. It doesn't even have to be the illuminati.
Just imagine 50 of the worlds business leaders and politicians colluding toward some goal, whether monetary or megalomaniacal . They wouldn't have control of everything, but they'd have an important ability to influence everything.
Anyways, I'm just playing devils advocate here, I don't really think there's some invisible hand pulling all the strings.

I work on the horse/zebra concept. When I hear hooves behind me, I think Horse not Zebra.
