Secret societies exist. (see: Freemasons etc). They don't run the world though. They're just secret clubs where people hang out (and get monumentally drunk once in a while, if what I've heard is true).
A secret society that controls the world implies that the members of said group would be cooperating with each other towards a common goal. If you knew anything at all about the state of global politics you'd know this would be impossible. We all hate each other's guts at this point in history (at least when we're not looking each other in the eye).
This is why I laugh at '9/11 was an inside job' retards, if they knew anything they would know that in order to pull off a scheme of that magnitude, the full cooperation (and secrecy) of several federal agencies would have been needed. For fucks sake we can't even agree on how to spend what little money we have that isn't owned by the Chinese. How do people think the US government, let alone the alleged Illuminati, are going to do something like this?
That being said though, there is a group of people that control the world, and that would be corporate America. If you could objectively catalog and gather all the material wealth and assets in the world, I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of it was owned by an American company in some form. These guys control all the money; therefore they control the world. Countries could rise and fall at their whim if they wished it, if they weren't too busy sucking them dry.
