Imagine what would happen if people that weren't part of the hierarchy looked in the Vatican vaults and revealed the buried secrets of the city on seven hills.

Besides with the exception of the Teutonic Order, most other Orders were roughly French or British.

There are many points when through threat of excommunication the pope was able to have a huge influence over kingdoms that weren't even part of the holy roman empire. It was the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church alone that was able to rally all of Europe together under one banner for the Crusades.
