• Is it weird to be more moved by the deaths of non-humans in films?
Don't forget about the dog in I Am Legend. That was so sad.
Or Marley and Me.
It's because we have been desensitized to the point where seeing other humans (excluding loved ones, friends, ect.) in distress no longer phases us. I mean we see it every day in the news, we kill virtual opponents in games, watch violent movies, t.v., ect. ect. to where it's become no big deal, and that is becoming social norm.
The fucked up kinda bad like in The Hurt Locker gets to ya, like when the kid was cut opened and stuffed and mistaken for the other kid selling dvd's.
I most certainly consider it to be normal, especially considering the frequent tendency of non-human characters representing pure emotions such as compassion or warmth in a much deeper manner.
This, plus the tendency of humans to drop like flies :v:
I dunno really.. The only movies where I've actually cried have been gran torino, letters from iwo jima, and forest gump... And those were all human characters.
Simba so sad :(
It's all about the portrayal. For example, the guy getting eaten by the T-Rex in Jurassic Park? Couldn't stop laughing. Yet when Goose died in Top Gun, that's a pretty moving scene. However, one thing always brings me to tears:
That episode made me cry when I watched it. I feel more sad when an animal character dies than when human ones do all the time. Often as I think it's harder for dogs to pretend to be sad or scared than humans. They act better than the humans do half the time.
No, everyone has been desensitized to humans dying, animals are more moving.
Hmm. I still find the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan where the slo-mo comes in more emotionally intense than most scenes involving the death of non-human characters. Although what OP described is more sentimentally sad if you know what I mean. Those sorts of characters are always humanised to a point that they are really more human and 'pure' than us, and are given a unique innocence that I think is what makes them stand out and makes them so easy for us to empathise and sympathise with. So in response to your question, no not really, but it sometimes depends on whether it's a humanised character or not, not just some random kitten getting blown up.
Neither bothers me.
Neither bothers me.
Not impressed
It's okay to be touched, Beavis.
Not totally relevant, but I saw this painting in a museum and it made me feel sad... (It's called "Will he come back?" and the picture on the wall is a certificate saying the dogs owner was killed in action in the trenches)
Not impressed
I know.
Haha, I just remembered watching this documentary that was on Discovery or Nat Geo a few years ago about these two autonomous probes (or whatever they're called) that were sent on a mission to this planet to search for extraterrestrial life. Halfway through probe 1 gets mysteriously knocked out and the other probe starts to search all over the planet for it. Eventually probe 2 finds it lying destroyed in a pile of wreckage surrounded by a stone circle. Probe 2 goes over to inspect probe 1 but suddenly these aliens come out of nowhere and destroy it too before either of them had the chance to send info back to earth about this alien race. Call me weird, but I actually felt sort of moved by the whole thing [editline]20th January 2012[/editline] [QUOTE=Sgt.
