Google "gif2apng" to make apng files from .gif files. Just drag the .gif file into the program and it outputs the png. Chrome does not animate .png avatars...

The megathread in question shouldn't be in GD, that's the only problem I have with it. This thread isn't nearly as gross and is where it should be, so its not really something to compare to.
