True some people here are just whining about minor stuff, but that doesn't change that they're paid to arrest and uphold the law, not to protect civilians(and their rights), and that they're legally allowed to lie.
I'm not sure where you are, but here to be a Police Officer you need a High School Diploma (GED might work), 2 years of College / University, and to pass the Police Academy.
(up Here) The academy is optional, along with the college. However, you have near a zero percent chance of being hired without them.
I am freaking GLAD for the german police, they don't just follow actions they talk in a personal way not only in a business way like "Ive got told to do so so I do that" they always ask and don't suspect the worst, we here in germany have freaking great police.
Some years ago there also was this car crash and only a friend of mine and me saw it so we stayed and helped the police to block the road from other vehicles and after we did that they came to us and said "very nice of you both to help us out here you both did a good job (insert big friendly smile)" and he gave us 1€ :v: (I still have that 1€ from 5 years ago in a little book I wrote that story in)
In short : Germany police is very nice, all the time and they first talk then take action when it's really needed.

Yeah, the danish police are pretty personal too, works both ways though.

the law is there to protect civilians from each other and themselves. that statement doesn't make much sense haha

And what is the duty of the law?
Pros of police: The fact that we have them is enough to keep most things in place
Cons: corrupt assholes who do nothing more then pass parking tickets and give you a hard time for the smallest of shit.
That's how it goes around here.
the law is there to protect civilians from each other and themselves. that statement doesn't make much sense haha
Have you ever been protected by a cop? I never fucking have, like I remember one time where some cunt randomly started assaulting me, and a cop saw the -WHOLE- thing, and just because I'm better at fighting I got him down to the ground and held him there for the cop, we both got fucking arrested, and the copper did NOTHING until I already had him on the ground, he was just watching.
A store wanted to search my backpack once for no reason, so I said "no fuck that" and they said that I had to get searched or they would call the cops, I refused and they did. One officer showed up and he said I had to be searched, and I said "No, I'm not getting searched. I have my rights."" and I just left, the cop tried to force me to stay, but I threatened to call the police ON the police and he backed down.
Probably because you looked suspicious. It's true that you have the right to decline getting searched but if you're looking too suspicious you can get quite a hefty fine for doing shit like this. As with all rights, it has it's boundaries.
I know a few officers myself, all of them are cool guys. It's almost as if people just see officers as some soldiers sent by Satan to kill people's fun or some shit. I just hate how people think of officers because they have a family, they're human, and like you they have emotions.

FP has as many people that blindly follow police orders as there's people that hate the police for no reason.
See, I know that without police the place would go down the shitter, but fucking hell they need to step up the penalties for not doing your job, and how hard you need to work to become a cop in the first place, there's WAY too many shitty cops, anywhere.

Large independent studies of law enforcement has denounced the idea that there are just bad people who happen to get jobs in law enforcement and more that the system as a whole creates a situational outcomes where it is likely that law enforcement are overstepping their bounds. This is essentially "The Lucifer Effect" in which gray areas and lack of oversight lead to an abuse of powers regardless of personality and moral compass. As of now, law enforcement is not really addressing these types of issues and how to reduce such effect and instead are sticking to the "bad apples" argument instead of attempting to fix the systematic effects that is the cause so much police abuse.
I was around 9 years old, and had my entire hockey team over for a party. It was 4am and we went and played street hockey. The police showed up due to a noise complaint and searched for alcohol vv

They are not obligated to help you. Supreme court actually ruled this, at least in the U.S.

Exactly, they are only there to arrest you, don't you see something wrong with how that's done?
Got pulled over by one of those electric scooter cops, the ones that you can't hear until they drive right next to you and ask you to pull over. Now, my own scooter isn't in the best of states: Taped up number plate and rear light, non-standard exhaust, and I didn't carry my license with me.
Instead of being an ass or a paranoia fuck though, I just played my cool and treated the officer normally. You know, like a human being. A nod or two, a smile, and a relaxed attitude can just mean the difference between a ticket of 80 bucks, or some advice on how to fix it and a friendly goodbye as you part ways.
So yeah, basically after some chatter he just said "Look, I'm not going to hand out a ticket, especially not on such a beautiful day. But someone else in a bad mood might. Just get it fixed up in a bike shop, alright?". And that was it.
Made me feel good about it, and probably the officer as well for not having to deal with a paranoid douchbag :buddy:
Exactly, they are only there to arrest you, don't you see something wrong with how that's done?
Minorities and people living in southern LA do.
There is no fucking reason you should have been ticketed for waiting on someone, even more so when your friend came and proved your story.
I'm not sure what it went under loitering or something. But it's just a ticket most of my friends have gotten them. I've gotten about three or four over the years for good reason.
When I was younger I used to stop out on school nights to bunk off. They went under as wasting police time.
But yeah that time round was just looking suspicious. I don't even know what the tickets are for. I think it's so many strikes and you get taken into the station.
I may not of deserved but at the time I was shitting myself and at the back of my mind craving Monster Xspreso. Stuff is amazing.
The police, they defend us from crime. But not all police are good role models. Some are hypocrites. On YouTube you can find videos of them breaking laws. On the news awhile back some took advantage of this drunk woman. Don't get me wrong, I know some officers who are friendly.
I personally have seen them do things, that if we did it, we would be written up for it. I saw one recently who parked in a Handicap spot, with NO handicap license, and no emergency. It got me so mad that he thought he was so special to park there to get some coffee. I have also seen one park right in front of a fire hydrant. I would've recorded it, but I am a teenager and don't have the nerve. :P

What you have to remember here is that police are still people. There is no way that all of them are shining paragons of mankind, but to say that they are worse than regular people for it (which you heavily imply) is ignorant.
Have you ever been protected by a cop?
protected myself? no. hasn't been a time where i've needed the cops help before it's been sorted.
seen other people be protected from themselves? yes. i've seen them run into the middle of a something like 10 man brawl and split it up and so many other situations where people are just fucking stupid. but that's not their only job... of course
I never fucking have, like I remember one time where some cunt randomly started assaulting me, and a cop saw the -WHOLE- thing, and just because I'm better at fighting I got him down to the ground and held him there for the cop, we both got fucking arrested, and the copper did NOTHING until I already had him on the ground, he was just watching.
yes, some cops are bad and corrupt with power. if that's what occurred, you shouldn't have been arrested.
the law has been designed to protect people from taking actions at the detriment to others. police are only there to protect people from doing that. i don't remember what i was trying to suggest before.

i didn't defend anyone. all i said was that people harbour unjust hate towards - and that their contribution to this thread was funny.
some people have a reason to hate the police - but i'd go as far as saying most people on facepunch don't.
they see a video of some sheriff from the hilo county police department in the US tackling some smartass kid, and then all of a sudden any constable that approaches them on the other side of the world is a dickhead.

A lot of people cry and moan about the police how bad or hypocritical they are, then they get robbed and kiss their asses for hours straight when they plead to find their stolen shit.

Depends on the position. This rarely applies to your standard traffic|patrol cops who usually only need a high school level (in some cases not even that). These are also usually the guys that most people have bad experiences with. Usually even moreso if they are town cops. Not to mention psych eval tests tend to be more restrained there.
As they are those that usually fine people. You have to keep in mind that there's also a difference between the fine distribution.
If a state cop fines you, the fine goes to the state and essentially gets lost and dilluted. If a town cop fines you, the cash goes to the town, and towns tend to really like cops and departments that fine a lot.
So those guys will usually try to fine you as much as they can. on top of that due to lower requirements for them as opposed to state cops (or hell any other police role really) they tend to know the law less, and have a whole slew of other problems associated with them.
Usually when people voice crits at the police it's at two groups.
Riot police (which gets extreme amounts of flack no matter what they do. And the media lows targeting them about how they beat up a bunch of hooligans, men and women. (without mentioning that they first got stones thrown at them, firecrackers launched at them and who knows what else by those very same men and women)
Town cops: Here quite a lot of the flack they get is actually justified, though admittedly a lot still has no merit.
