You can have a concrete ideology when still being at the center.

For example my friends see me as a neutralist and a centrist mostly, with a small drift to the left (maybe I should show them my latest political compass test result, but anyway..)

So, my friend really is really opposed to death sentences, he says they are barbaric and anyone who sentences someone to death should be locked up for life. Most of my other friends disagree with him, and me, I have a firm ideology which I always tell him when he brings up the subject: "I DON'T FREAKING CARE!!!". This shuts him up mostly, if I say anything else he justs blabbers on for a few good hours.
And I really don't care about death sentences, I think they might be a little harsh, but people who get themselves in a situation where they are sentenced to death, probably deserve just a little less (life in prison).
