Well, he didn't really give any info on what he has tried before, besides, from what he named. He hasn't dabbled in much death metal.

I recommend Mastodon. If you want something more melodic or less heavy, try Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye. If you want something heavier, try Remission or Leviathan. And if you want something extremely heavy and weird, try Call of The Mastodon.
Isis is also a very good band. But if you want more metalcore, I heard Bleeding Through is pretty decent.
