Lifting heavy will always be more impressive and more fun. Looks is visual and what fun is that if your numbers are shit?
The bigger you get the more weight you can move, simple as that. I barely train for strength, when I do test its always higher. Training for strength will allow you to push greater numbers for you given bodyweight (CNS adapting) but mass is always the key to higher numbers.
I think I used the wrong words.
I should probably point out I have been awake since yesterday just so I can fix my sleep so I can keep lifting. So I'm probably trying starting some weird argument while being a bit gone in the head.
So I started working out again after nearly 4 years. Needless to say, shit is not good. I weigh 292 lbs (up from around 255-260 from playing DL and powerlifting in High School) and can only bench 185-195 now and I would rather not squat max until I can buy a belt. I did 135 easily (really is nothing for my weight) without it, so I would guestimate I can still at least over 215 with a belt and spotter.
Its fucking discouraging, especially when you are mostly alone with your thoughts instead of being caught up in group stuff that comes with working out with a team.

your implication that everyone lifts (or should lift) for strength and numbers is plain wrong
Ive been going thru some times lately man and even tho you all are some internet strangers i feel for you brahs and i wish yall the best in whatever you pursue man i fucking love you guys 8 years of being a facepunching retard i dont regret it one bit

I fucking hate being 230lbs man. I really do. As much as I love being lean-ish and relatively attractive and not having massive amounts of facial fat its just not me, I've been fat my whole fucking life and if I don't bulk up to 270 and get strong as fuck and hopefully make nationals I am not going to be satisfied with my athletic career later on in the in life.
honestly Qeef you look good at whatever weight you were the last photo you posted (higher than 230 I think), carry your weight bear-mode style which is fucking lucky
[editline]29th September 2015[/editline]
like you look better than me at 185
Current Body time.
Put on 10LBs so now I'm 165LBs. Eating a lot more, pretty much just put away the food log and began to snack more and pack more carbs. My little 4-pack is still there, but I need more meat on the arms.
Arms, delts and lats brah, otherwise looking good
does anyone have a giant issue with people who have significantly different physical builds/proportions telling you what to do
because i sure fucking do
i have a fairly short torso and very long femurs, so the only way for me to reach good squat depth is to go wider than shoulder stance & low bar. it looks strange but it feels perfectly fine and i can hit good comfortable numbers with it. yesterday this barrel of a samoan guy tells me im doing it totally wrong and tries to encourage me to use narrow stance and "reduce the weight because your form is suffering"
bitch you try squatting with my stance and tell me how that works for you
[editline]29th September 2015[/editline]
in other news my OHP is eons ahead of any other lift i do
slapped out a 165 lbs OHP at about 154 lbs(STILL CUTTAN)
dont know how the fuck im doing it but whatever
jesus christ
had to bail out of a squat today because I was falling forward
ended up doing an impossibly heavy (or so I thought) full ROM goodmorning
well I started finally olympic lifting again, doing it out of the way from my normal collegiate program undercover cause my coaches would flip shit if they knew. Fuck I'm exhausted though, and it's definitely rough on my knees doing all this shit.
normal day now goes like
7am Wake Up
8AM-930AM Do normal college lifting, which is already pretty intense
11-315 class
315-400PM running and sprinting and abs and plyometrics
400PM-530ish Throwing heavy ass fucking objects repeatedly
6PM-730PM Olympic Lifting
fuark
what joint supps do yall recommend?

Now when I'm awake and clear I'll re-say. Many lift to look good but I always wonder what's the fun in that? It's sad that not enough people are more passioned about strength and just doing the lifts. It's so fun to self manage a new PR and to see professionals do a heavy olympic lift or doing a big DL.

Shit, that was my issue with squats too. It just doesn't work. Now I can do like 65kg at 8 reps when doing a pose that my body is comfortable with when holding a bar compared to being stuck at around 45kg 5 reps for several weeks.
Also how did you manage that OHP? I'm stuck at 45kg 5rep which is about 100 pounds and I weigh about 160 pounds.

this is definitely a PR that I won't break any time soon

At the weights you're at I imagine you wouldn't have hit any real joint or tendon issues that would make you re-evaluate what's good and what's not for your body.
You shouldn't derive your fun from numbers only because when you get to heavier weights the number gains will slow down dramatically.
Sure I like occasionally hitting a PR, but it's not the goal in and of itself for me.
Also, I just like lifting. It doesn't have to be for a new PR, a new strength goal or anything. I just like the process and the results it gives me. And it doesn't matter if I 'feel' like it or not on any particular day (bar for legitimate health concerns), it's just something I do, a part of my life, it doesn't need to be particularly fun or engaging.

Well squats have always been my awful lift and I will most likely see medical issues over 100kg but here the form really needs to fit my body. I started with dumbellsquats which prevented me to go under parallel but I could do 40kg compared to less with the bar and felt comfortable.
With bar it's such a difference because the arms are not in a comfortable position so I was stuck for months in Squat while DL and Extensions went at a nice pace.
It's mostly about inexperience for me when it comes to squat. I used to do Lying curls and leg extensions for legs until I got a better bar and a rack. I'm most likely the worst at progress in lifting because I do it for some months and then just give up for half a year and it's been like that since I were 15.
Honestly if I'm not having fun then it just doesn't work but now I've manage to keep doing it. Even at high and slow numbers I will most likely have fun because I look forward to the day I go up which keeps me lifting. Bench is slow as fuck for me but I keep doing it because I know it will count up.
You're absolutely right that my form will most likely change at heavier weights. I've noticed this with bench. It didn't matter if I had arched or flat back back then because it felt the same at low weights.

Those 2 things are very related. I think you need to let go of the 'need to have fun' in the gym and just do it. To me this reeks of motivation vs discipline, motivation is short term and it gives you that jolt to make a decision, but it's discipline that makes you follow through in the longer term with that decision.

Then it stops being a hobby and turns into a chore. Discipline I'll save for when working because discipline for a hobby together with adhd is a bad combo because then I'll just feel miserable when lifting.
I think being a successful bodybuilder requires a bit of a masochism.
You gotta enjoy the burn.

To be perfectly honest I have no idea. I'm using Candito Linear Progression for my upper/lower body, but my OHP has always been a relatively good lift for me. I do train rows and presses a lot, but even so I've known guys who can bench more than me but OHP less.
I also never do more than one heavy set in my routine for OHP. Eg, for warmup it'll be(all in lbs) 45x5, 95x5, 115x5, then 135x6 or something.

This. This this this this this. I've made the most gains out of my routine from just going to the gym out of discipline, and it's heavily shaped how I handle things in real life. Sometimes I do go to the gym to have fun to hit some 1RMs or see how much volume I can belt out, but normally discipline keeps you focused on the goal at hand.
185 3*3 deads, was quite easy so im thinking of bumping it up to 190 even if I won't necessarily get it the first workout. Sumo is coming along nicely though, technique is on point atm
i'm long past the point where I have to ask myself if i'm going to the gym or not
and i don't even remember why I started
lol
Found out that if I can drop down to the 74 kg class by next year and keep my strength (probably gain even as im still new to powerlifting), using my estimated totals, I qualify for worlds atm. gonna see how tough its gonna be to drop below 80 first, 74 might be a bit of a stretch but it's doable I think. If I start losing strength hectically im just gonna say fuck it and stay in the 83 class though

I prefer training for strength personally, but there is something to be said about training for aesthetics. After a certain point there really isn't much of a practical benefit to having the extra strength, the act of developing a well-balanced physique is challenging and rewarding. I don't think most bodybuilders have shitty numbers regardless. (At least compared to the average sedentary fuck)
This Friday Ima see if I can hit my 200LB mark on a 5*5 Squat.
I can now do 85LBs on OHP 5*5 but God it's a pain.

i'll be the first to admit that i'm almost purely aesthetic-based with only caring about strength in very few compound lifts. granted i started lifting a year ago solely to put on muscle and i'm sure my priorities will shift once i start to approach that goal of "being big".
but i love me some isolation exercises mmmmmm

I take a fuckload of fish oil, like, I think im getting at least 7 grams of DHA a day and after a week or so I definitely noticed a difference.
I've lost a good chunk of discipline and drive because I have no set goal. Lately I've been going to keep myself from shitting on myself for looking bad and not going and the drive I had before just isnt there. I went from every god damn day to fuck, I think my last lift for 4 or 5 days ago and I hate the fuck out of myself but I just get so spent with work
It takes so much work to progress, discipline is 100% of whats gotten me where I am right now, but having to cook and eat 5 times a day, even just eating enough to function, coupled with working 12 hours a day and being up at 6am its been getting hard.
Did 90kg x 3 deadlift (198lbs?) that was maximum for me though
Is there a way to measure powder dietary supplements with household items? I want to measure out a gram (roughly) of a supplement but I don't have a scale. Is there any way to do this? It doesn't have to be exact.
just buy a fucking scale
they're really cheap
Fucking of course, when I go to get a mat to do crunches and the only place to do them is behind a chick, she decides to finish her break on her phone and start doing a plank. Fuck me, I need to do these crunches nigguh, not inconspicuously stare at your ass in those yoga pants.

It's not as bad as having the one-way window into the exercise classroom set right in front of the squat rack. I see these girls doing yoga and it gives me the motivation to push up from my bottom position in squats.
EDIT: Not to mention that I try to get to the gym around noon when the girls get into the classroom and secure the same rack.
I'm becoming a pretty well rounded athlete, I do a shitton of plyometrics and running and jumping and throwing and lifting. and run on sentences
[editline]2nd October 2015[/editline]
cleaned 309 today to, next step to is to hit my old high school pr of 330
