I've decided to go swimming 3-5 times a week, depending on whether or not I have anything else to do. I'll be doing a minimum of 3 swim sessions a week, of about 2 hours or so. I'll increase how many lengths and widths I do as I progress and become better and fitter at swimming My question to you guys is what's the best way to lose weight? Now, I'm not disgustingly obese, I'm just "festively plump". I wanna burn off all this fat I've gained during Christmas and just general laziness. Getting quite fed-up when I get invited out and all my mates are swimming in the sea and I refuse to, because I feel I'm a bit too tubby. Thing with me though is it all accumulates on my chest and stomach. My legs, arms and neck is fine. Hence the reason why everyone thinks I'm an alright size and don't know why I don't like getting in the ocean. So, is swimming the best way to tone up and lose all my weight or is there a better way? I'll be going to the gym as well (most likely before swimming) and I'll be taking protein shakes to bulk up a bit. I'm not looking to get ripped, I just wanna look healthy, as a 17 year old guy should. I'm going to start jogging every morning as well before showers, so that'll also help. I'm prepared to take a month or so to become a decent size. Right now, I'm about 6ft 3" and weigh around 74KG so using this chart I'm pretty much healthy (a BMI of 20). But like I said, fat just likes to accumulate on my torso. Any helpful tips you guys can give me, and any sort of timeline I can have if I take this really seriously? I'm not sure what to do about food, I'll start eating REALLY healthy, but I do like to eat tasty foods like meat and stuff.
Don't even consult with the BMI if your over 6 feet. Fuck, don't even consult the BMI period, it's a disgustingly inaccurate measurement that freaks people out even if they are fine.
first off, good luck. anyway ive lost about 2 stone over the past 2 and a half years and it kicks so much ass. cruising around without a t-shirt on in the sun is awesome. anyway, ive lost the most weight in the last year ive been at university. as mentioned before, ditch your car if you have one. buy a cheap bike and just ride that everywhere. if you need to go shopping and cant fit all the stuff you need in your backpack in one trip, make two! also running is a great cardio excercise (read: burns fat) its what all the boxxers do, and they are insanely fit. start out slow and short with the runs though as your bones need time to strengthen against the impact. RE pumping iron. ive started using protein in the last few months, and the results ive got are sweet. people have complemented me on how muscly i am and id been strength training since i started getting fit. so id say protein works. have fun.
Whats wrong with swimming in the sea? Its awesome. Plus you always need to invite the one fat guy to come swimming with you
Cook some of your own food, you can really cut down fat/calories and price by doing so, and it's generally more filling than fast food. For instance, sauteed chicken with an herb lime sauce and rice takes about 10 minutes, costs a few bucks (chicken's cheap), and tastes great, all while being better for you and more filling than fast food. EDIT: Oops, just read you generally eat well anyways. Well... cook some of your own food anyways, you lazy ass. It's fun and the ladies love a man that can cook.
Wow, this is pretty much what I wanted to post for a while now. I have the same feelings of wanting to lose weight, and I I do is pretty much swim for 2 hours a day, every weekday. So I guess we're almost on the same path.
Whats wrong with swimming in the sea? Its awesome. Plus you always need to invite the one fat guy to come swimming with you
Swimming in the sea is awkward, and the sea near me had sewage dumped into it for a while. Stopped now, but it still looks fucking dreadful.
What I do is I alternate what I'm doing everyday. One day I do an upper body workout, pushups, situps, that thing where you make your body into a v shape and hold it, etc. I do a set of each, a quick rest (usually one minute), then do another with five less of each exercise until I reach one. Ex. My exercise for pushups goes from 60-55-50-45-...1. Then usually at the end of the week I see how many I can do consecutively, right now for push ups its 80 but that's been after months of work. On the next day I usually either do rest or a leg workout. Since I'm an introverted fuck right now I avoid the track and either swim alone or do sprinting. For running I try to raise my knees as high as I can and keep my legs moving as lightly and as fast as I can for 30 seconds (mainly because I run the 200 and 400 m) Rest in between each set and repeat. I'm going to start dding short long distance (1 mile, maybe 2 so I can also build stamina. Also I think to maximize fat loss work out before you eat one of the larger meals of the day. Usually they contain carbs, and the way body burns stuff goes carbs-fat-muscle. So if you exercise before eating carbs you'll be burning fat. Just watch you don't starve yourself and start losing muscle as well. Eating healthy works to but not without exercise. It also depends on what type of body you want. If you want to be super ripped then also go to the gym and lift weights or if you're insecure buy some and lift them at home. If you want a sleeker body continue swimming or go running like what you're already doing. When you feel slightly tired keep on going, when you feel tired keep on going, when you're about to collapse keep on going a bit more and then stop. Pain is part of exercise, feeling it signals what you're doing is going to help your body in the long run. But don't over do it, remember that your body has limits. There's a balance between a good and a crazy workout and its different for everyone. Finally, don't get discouraged. You're not supposed to see change immediately unless you take steroids so keep on reminding yourself your reason for exercising. Then high five yourself for actually doing it.
How are you fat at 165lbs at 6'3?. I mean really, I know kids that tall who are skinny as fuck at like 180-190. Cut out all the fast foods, grease, pop in your diet. Abs are made in the kitchen, just remember that.
I know soda is bad for you and the best you can drink is water, but out of curiosity; how much better are light drinks, like Coca-Cola light?
Nobody answered my question, so I guess I'll ask it again Speaking of swimming, for our sophomore year of highschool we are required to choose a sport and I chose swimming. However, I have never been on a swim team or any competitive swimming before, or anything like that, so I really don't know what to expect. Is it difficult? Is it straining? Should I practice anything before hand? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not in fit at all and 10 being incredibly fit, I'd say I'm about a 5 or 6. So what do you guys think, can you give me any tips on what to expect and or what I should know/do/practice before? [editline]09:25PM[/editline] I'm a little worried about what to expect, especially if we have to wear one of these :ohdear: [img_thumb]http://twonateshow.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/6_3_michael_phelps.jpg[/img_thumb] There's something about being in a pool full of guys with their cocks bulging out of a thin piece of rubber panties that I don't like
Good on you OP for wanting to get fit. I go running every other day and run around 3-6 miles each time, I really want to improve my arm muscle fitness though so that's somethign I need to work on, got some weights :)

Yes it is gross, yes no one wants to see it, but you all wear them. Also you can wear this instead: Oh and don't be afraid you will do fine. The first few days is like wow this sucks and is boring, but once you get into it and get more conditioned for it then it's great! You might want to start learning all the strokes so you will be a step ahead though.

The resistance of the water makes it that much harder, plus the fact that you're using muscles you don't normally use.
I just hope to god that they don't expect you to already know everything about swimming when you join... If that's what happens, I'm going to fail completely
They'll most likely weed out the naturally good swimmers from the people who sink like stones haha.
I'm a great swimmer, I can hold my breath for a great long time, and I'm confident in my abilities, I'm just not the most physically fit and don't know all of the strokes
OP I want to be 260 by the time I'm your age, opposite goals much?
I wish my complex had a pool. My old complex had one, I would swim in it every day and I lost MAD weight.
OP I want to be 260 by the time I'm your age, opposite goals much?
See, you're getting mixed up with weight of muscle and weight of useless fat. I would LOVE to be the biggest fucking guy ever, but that's not what I'm complaining about. I'm complaining about the fact that I have more fat than muscle. And it pisses me off. When I was going to the gym about 5 months ago, I lost a load of weight, then gained it. I didn't mind gaining weight cause I knew most of it was muscle. How old are you now? Also 260lbs is fucking crazy. That's 118kg. My dad, who is 47 and is more chubby than muscle weighs around 110kg. Good luck reaching that goal at 17. Impossible to do man. You'd have to start years before and it wouldn't work at 15 because you're not developed enough.
fish has less fat (does it have any) than beef, and more protien
Whaddaya talkin about, I'm '5"6 and 150 pounds
OP if you're 17 dont bother spending tons of $$$ on protein shakes and the likes, just get a decent diet with lots of proteins and low fats. and your muscles are still in it's natural growth so dont spend to much time in the gym.
Don't do protein shakes, your body naturally produces enough protein for muscle building. Protein is for people who need more energy... any excess protein is usually turned into fat
Lol you have ZERO idea what you are talking about.
Lol you have ZERO idea what you are talking about.
Care to elaborate buddy? Of course, if I was 12 or 15 that's different, I'm still very young. But at 17, I've reached the stage where I'm growing very slowly, so it won't impact me too much going to the gym.
Don't do protein shakes, your body naturally produces enough protein for muscle building. Although the protein shakes along with greek yogurt and cottage cheese is a bit excessive especially if you're trying to slim down. If I were you I'd do a lot of cardio (swimming is intense) and eat healthier until you were comfortable with your size before you started bulking up, otherwise you'll just look the same size until you get rid of the majority the fat on your body. On a semi-related note the "Ab ripper X" is an amazing ab workout that's part of the P90x system but I'd be surprised if you couldn't find it online somewhere.

All that "Muscle Confusion" I think is bullshit but the workout does work. I did it to gain weight and bulk up and within 2 months I went from 115 to 130 in muscle weight not fat. I struggle with gaining any weight and I'm vegetarian so getting heavier is harder to do but if there is one workout that will help you it is P90X. Also try Insanity, If you think the warm up is hard wait till the actual workout.
Care to elaborate buddy?
Sure. For starters, he's spreading shitty misinformation. Your body doesn't produce enough protein by itself "naturally", that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. If you believe that than good luck never weighing more than 120lbs. You need to consume around 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight, some may have to consume even more than that to effectively build muscle. Secondly, excess protein is not stored as fat, where the fuck did he even get that from. Protein is the most thermogenic macronutrient, making it extremely hard for the body to store as fat, couple this with the fact that the amount of protein you'd have to eat to reach "excess" levels is ridiculous and not even feasible. Also, what's excess? Do you have a meter in your body telling you when and how much nutrients it can process? No. You're much more likely to store fat from eating excess carbs. Infact, this is why obesity is so rampant. [editline]03:28AM[/editline]
Protein shakes are really pointless in my opinion. If you want to get bulked up then work out and as soon as you get home/finish then eat some meat or eggs to get natural protein and that should help; I did that for a while and it seemed to help. Oh and no problem, I hope you reach you goal!
When you're someone like me who's got a huge workload (boxing 4-5 nights a week, plus weights 3 nights a week) and is already consuming in excess of 3000 calories, protein shakes with peanut butter or olive oil are a fucking lifeline, it's pretty much the only way I can get those extra calories I need. [editline]03:40AM[/editline]
Care to elaborate buddy? Being 17 doesn't mean I can't work out. Of course, if I was 12 or 15 that's different, I'm still very young. Weight training has no impact on skeletal growth at all. Infact, it may even bolster it. You're at what most in the weightlifting world consider the perfect age to build a strong base. Ridiculous amounts of testosterone and growth hormones flooding your body pretty much means your ability to recover is ridiculous efficient and you can grow muscle with ease (if you're consuming enough food that is).
Bloody brilliant information. So protein shakes won't do me any harm, they will only help me, correct? My friend told me to stay away from Keratine or whatever it's called, because your body can become dependent on it and lose muscle quickly when you cut it off. Also, again, to JaegerMonster, is it worth me taking protein shakes whilst doing cardio exercises and swimming? That way, I'd build muscle easier and I wouldn't end up like a stick. And if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
Bloody brilliant information. So protein shakes won't do me any harm, they will only help me, correct? My friend told me to stay away from Keratine or whatever it's called, because your body can become dependent on it and lose muscle quickly when you cut it off.
I'd stay away from protein shakes, if your body doesn't consume all the protein you end up literally pissing away a fucking expensive shake. The best thing to do is just get out and start doing something. I'm a fatty, but I've lost 22lbs. in the last month by just getting out and riding my bike, or even just walking around.
Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise because its not hard on the joints, and it uses all of your muscles. Swimming is one of the best ways to start exercising after a lot of physiotherapy after an accident or a broken bone. (I'm a fully qualified swimming instructor, just for the record.) Try ditching the car and riding your bike instead. Its a great way to burn calories and fat, and its the most efficient vehicle ever made. As far as foods go, try to eat whole wheat bread. There are many advantages to eating it, versus white. Also try to stay away from prepared meals. They are usually high in sodium, or fat, so I wouldn't recommend them. Make yourself a Peanut Butter (All Natural) and Jam sandwich on whole wheat bread. It works for me.
Swimming is awesome but I suck HORRIBLY at it. So instead I took up weightlifting. It's pretty awesome too, my biceps, triceps and abs have grown significantly. (Infact I have a mild Six-pack already :buddy:). Also if you suck at swimming, start running/jogging, it's just as great.
