OP how old are you? Beacuse if you like 13 or 14 then that reaction is more accpectable imo, however you should still tell them that your going to do it anyway, they will most likely be pissed for a while then realise that you haven't changed as a person and hopefully be fine with you.

If he hangs around with them and they seem clearly uninformed in the first place, why not try and teach them so they can make a decision using facts that they have learned, not information they learned from school and on commercials about how bad drugs are in the first place, he could at least give them a chance because they might not know shit about drugs.
You're free to do whatever you like, but make sure that they're informed about what you're doing and that they know that you realize all facts or they'll pretty much give up on you without even giving you or it a chance in the first place.

i say if they won't let you do what you want then they're not very good friends. plenty of my friends absolutely HATE that i smoke weed but they didn't go ditching me after i started smoking, they just make jokes about it every once and a while.

State facts. Tell them it has not changed you. Tell them that its your own body and can have some positive side affects and little to not negitive side affects. If they still don't accept it then that's your call.

When I first started smoking my girlfriend dumped me and I lost two of my really good friends. I'm smoking less and all and they're my friends again.
I understand why they have such a strong hate towards it though. One of their older friends used to smoke to cope with depression, but in the end it just made it worse and they killed themselves..
What kind of friends are they? "I will leave you if you start using illegal drugs. I don't want you to start injecting Mari'RUA'na through your veins!".
Try to make them learn about drugs, and that you control your life and that what they are doing is simply pure manipulation. Tell them that if they aren't happy with that, that they can go fuck them-selves, and that they aren't real friends that should respect your choices.
