facebook just acquired instagram for $1 billion. I think that goes to show that photography is as relevant as ever (though not necessarily the art photography that we're generally trying to produce).

interesting, I'm happily awaiting the moment people don't need an iphone nor to go through piknik like sites to rape their pictures
speaking of, kinda

I know this guy's a good photog but seeing that little 'taken with instagram' thing on his and many other pictures from time to time kinda irks me

i get bothered by people taking pictures of plain things and using an instagram filter. the one you posted is a perfect example
why did you put a color overlay on a picture of a camera, why does it matter

I personally like to add a little "flare" to any image I post. Just to give it a little more edge and make it slightly more interesting to view.
But I don't use that shitty ass instagram thing that's for sure. Just the simple fact that the poster of that image utilizes such a tool is enough reason to believe that he probably doesn't know a thing about post processing.
well the social aspect of instagram is good. it's easy to link to facebook, and tumblr and such, which is cool. i just don't think every photo taken with it needs to look like it was taken with it. that's abusive.

Got this PM.
What a lovely surprise.
that made me feel all squiggly inside, that's amazing
Just realized I got free photoshop elements 8 with my Wacom tablet, good excuse to learn some basic post.
On the topic of instagram, I find the square format more fun to use than the standard android camera app, the only sharing aspect of it that appeals to me is showing photos in a list view to my friends, like a little storyboard. Handful of the effects are decent, I toyed around with a few to start with. http://statigr.am/kelvinharron
Can anybody give me some reading material on general photography? Learning framing, proper exposure, knowing what light is good, etc. A mixture of "How to get better at photography" and technical stuff. There's books at my school titled "Photography for beginners" and "How to make $25,000 a year with your camera" but they're all from the 1980s.
i think that is when most publishings were made mostly. i have one digital book, but it's from the 00's so it's kind of outdated for my styling.
what technical stuff do you think you need to buff up on? i would be willing to help, i know too much technical knowledge for my own good.

I guess my main problem right now is getting proper exposure. Until recently I'm been adjusting the aperture then the shutter speed to get the needle in the center of my light censor. Now I know the proper thing to do is adjust the shutter speed, and only change the aperture when dealing with depth of field. Any info on proper exposure, or how to use the bulb setting(hold button down, but for how long. What factors that?) on a camera properly would be of great help. Today I'm taking out my sprocket rocket which has no light sensor.
well if you are shooting in direct sunlight, use the f16 rule.
set your aperture to f16, and your shutter to the closest setting of your iso.
so if you are shooting 200 speed film, then your settings will be 1/250 and f16. then you if your max shutter is 1/1000, that is a 2 stop difference from 1/250. that allows you to shoot at f8 and 1/1000 in direct sunlight. If you use a polarizing filter you can get another stop of light (so f5.6), because those block out some light
but yeah proper exposure is a difficult thing for me, i'm rather spoiled by liveview.
That's useful, but I'm using a film camera and I don't believe I have control over the ISO.
you do but only set by the ASA of the film you choose.

I can never use liveview outdoors, things look so terribly underexposed and you end up cranking up some settings, only to find some shade and see the pictures you thought were super dark were actually the best of the bunch
you do but only set by the ASA of the film you choose.
Normally I'm shooting with 400 speed film, 400 being the ISO(not stating the obvious for you, but repeating it to myself so I get it down). What does ASA stand for?
ASA is just film terms for ISO.

yeah it's tough sometimes, but the nex screen has some good dynamic range and settings being at 920k dots. i've had trouble at times, but overall i've been able to live with it

asa=iso
so you would want to set aperture to f16, and shutter at 1/500. That would give you 1/1000 at f8, just make sure you know all the differences in full stops, because that's how analog cameras are measured.
