Do it.
I can't tell you how much it helped me. Having that time - it'll give you a chance to think. Take a break from education.
You're Scottish, so don't have too much to worry about with tuition fees etc.
Travel.
If you have a bit of money, pop over to Europe. Stay in some hostels. Doing that sort of thing improved my confidence so much, it's unbelievable.
For personal growth I think that time is important, for yourself.
Wise words there pick, I think both me and my girlfriend are taking a year out together. Idk, i hope she does anyway, uni is a relationship killer and I couldn't stand to be without this girl.
I'm also gonna go to a local apprenticeships evening thingymabob in the hopes that there is the possibility of a pro photographer taking me under their wing.
What if you're in the U.S.? Would you still give the same advice?

thanks pick
my plan was get a job doing something retail because it's pretty easy and save and save.
i'd buy a cheap as fuck car and travel around the uk, maybe venture to europe.
before going to uni sell the car to a 17 year old and recoup some of my investment.
the money i put aside from work that hasn't gone on travels will go towards funding accommodation
i will end up in halls for the first year i think but it means i can meet people and have a good time
So I live in a big old ~100-150 year old house.

I don't even have leave home to urbex.
oh my jesus
so the guy the architect firm is named after is definitely keeping me
I ran out of things to do at the end of the day, so I picked up a little on old photos and dug through my misc junk from when I went into the middle of Chicago to shoot for the project I was working on, he came by and was interested in what it was, followed by "Wait, you took this? Whoa", and we started talking a bit about how I do photo work, and he asked if I knew how to do surveys (where you go around with the laser tripods and take measurements and gather research photos of landscapes for projects).
It was a obviously a rhetorical question, so I started talking about how I'd be happy to train to do that, and already do the reconnaisance pictures of sites in full detail for my own 3D projects (given they're for my own parts of the project 90% of the time anyways), even having done most of the ones for for the current project for them.
He got distracted by his assistant and stepped away for a bit, then went and talked a bit with my dad to ask a bit about my work, and they got on the topic of how I like fixing up old cameras and junk, I heard my dad mention I probably had one or two with me. OBVIOUSLY I carry my TLR everywhere so they had me dig it out of my camera bag and I talked with him about cleaning it up and fixing up a few of the little bits that were troubling it, and he got on to a little story about how he used to love film photography, but his camera body vanished when he gave it to a shop to fix. Not sure how, but all he had left were some lenses.
I asked about the lenses and he commented on how they wouldn't fit anything modern, some old minolta mount. That got me thinkin', and I dug up a picture of the model camera I was given recently to make sure it was a minolta (could only remember "T101". First picture to pop up and he knew that was the one he had, mentioning the oddly high pentaprism cover and that he had a 101 and someone he knew had a 201.
dug into my phone, and there sat a picture of the camera sitting on my desk, SRT101. A friend's neighbor was close to throwing it out and noticed my friend carrying a film camera (for photo class, which she was admittedly terrible at). Didn't have lenses for the body but figured she'd know what to do with it other than toss it. She gave it to me
and now I've got the owner of one of the largest retail arch firms in the world talking about getting me to do survey stuff, which is mostly being flown to locations. I THINK I have the job
asdfuckingfafsda
oh and tomorrow they're having me set up a handful of new work computers with $80,000 worth of software licencing jesus

Congrats!!! How old are you again? 22?
24 but I look like a highschooler and don't feel much older. This is kinda scary, but damn this is cool.
[editline]e[/editline]
now all i have to do is clean this old clunker up... hmm, looks like a flake of old paint fell in on top of the focusing screen, I wonder if that's easy to get at
oh look a repair manua-
Had my first period of photography. Was told to google images and put them in a word document.
Fuck my life.
Although, the some people in the other class just googled my photos and used them :P
just sat my photography/design exam today
I felt pretty confident about it, but yeah, when I first joined photography as a subject it was like that for me. If you're doing high level stuff it'll get better, if you're not, seriously expect basics
the difference is mine isn't so much a photography class, as a design class with a photography focus. It's actually hard fucking work and really frustrating.

So, wait, you just found that just now?
Guessing you're now in the process of designing either a wine cellar or a mancave.
You know you're too obsessed with photography when you manually focus your eyes and blur the background in order to check out the bokeh.
Yes.
Olympus EP2 worth it?
I'm really looking to get a cheap, small digital camera so I don't have to lug around my DSLR in crowded places. It'd be stealthier, plus I can always pack both and not have to worry about lens switching in pinch situations.
So again, worth it?

Doesn't Trogdon have a NEX? I wonder how he likes it.

NEX's are great, possibly the best/largest sensors in a mirrorless body short of the EP3/OM-D and their external viewfinders are great too. EP2 is a fine choice though, honestly you can't go wrong with pretty much any mirrorless bodies at the minute, they're all pretty good in their own ways, GX1 is fantastic if you have the budget, the power zoom kit lens is also small too if you want some zoom.
I'd first decide if you want a viewfinder/are willing to pay the extra to get one on the mirrorless bodies that support them, as quite a lot don't and if they do, they're £150+ new.
Well Amazon is having a sale on EP2 bodies, and I was wondering whether or not to get it since my D90 can't use any of the cool old lenses I've just been hoarding. Cool thing with the mirrorless is all the lenses you can mount.
Yeah I'll probably pick it up. I honestly don't think I'll get a viewfinder add-on since this is more for quick shooting, and bringing a camera up to your eyes is just an extra step (and extra money). It's only really a compliment to my existing gear.

If you have the money and will get use from it then I'd go for it, the EP2 is a great body, I'd also get black for street photography.
You know you're too obsessed with photography when you manually focus your eyes and blur the background in order to check out the bokeh.
Yes.
I don't think that's a thing you can do
Anyone have any idea why the samsung mirrorless cameras are so cheap for what you get ($300 with kit lens, APS-C 15mp sensor, small body, AMOLED screen, nice amount of features) yet noone seems to own them/recommend them? Do they have a proprietary lens mount or something?
I don't think that's a thing you can do
i disagree
raygen when did you last get your eyes checked?
my bet is you're short sighted in one eye
maybe he has super specs and is reverse-mounting lenses on them

Yeah the EP2 is only $230 on Amazon body only, and it's black.
I don't think that's a thing you can do
I do it all the time.
