Ok, so I'm a casual who mainly only takes photos on vacations or during other permitting events, and I was wondering if anyone had any general protips that can, if anything, reduce the number of shots you end up going back to and deleting, wondering why you bothered taking them? I've read the "how to use lines" thread and continue to lurk, but I'm just looking for general guidelines to taking decent shots, stuff like: - Rule of thirds - Underexposed is usually better than overexposed - Noise is usually better than (shake) blur

Other than that, just going through photos getting posted in this thread and reading the threads in this sub forum could help you a lot
- Noise is usually better than (shake) blur
That is the thing that P mode cannot seem to work out... EG: It would rather put my SS to 30 seconds than boost my ISO a little bit. I'd use P mode a lot more if it wasn't for that.
So a guy came into my work today (Seafood Center for those curious) and his wife asked me when school started, what year I was and where I went, you know the typical conversational stuff. And she asked what kind of stuff I was interested in for extracurricular activities (I guess their granddaughter is going to be a freshmen at my school) so I told them Photography and videography, stuff like that. Then the guy says his hobby is photography and he starts asking me about everything. First he asked me Film or Digital. I told him both but I like film more. He asked my why and I told him that when a picture turns out the way you want on film, I feel much more accomplished and proud of it. And there's just no way (In my opinion) to get the image you can get with film. Of course the guy goes on and tells me how he used to work with film but he hates it now and digital is so much better because there are 3 different (Can't think of right word) ways of exposing (iso, shutter, aperature I'm guessing) and only 2 in film. "Film is a dying thing" he said. So he kept talking about what software I use at home and at school, what film I use, B&W or color, (he made a remark here about how I must use a super high ISO speed because of the film I use)brand of printer at school etc. etc. then came the digital talk. "What digital camera?" he asked. I responded "Canon 60D" he paused, looked at me and smiled. "I have a Canon 5D Mk III" (And you probably know what I'm thinking in my head right now) So I complimented it, acknowledged that it was full frame and things, then he began to talk about how good the ISO range was (he pronounced it "ICE-O" which kind of annoyed me) and how it could go up to 25600 or whatever it was and how he always uses Auto ice-o because he likes to control the shutter speed and what not. I don't know why the hell he was so into ice-o but it was an interesting conversation. TL;DR They bought a pound of Sea Scallops ($22.99/#) and a pound of Scottish farmed Salmon ($16.99/#) I apologize if any of that doesn't make sense, I don't feel like reading over it twice.
It's because film you are stuck with it for the entire roll, and digital you can go from (in his case) 50-25600. So that flexibility means a lot to them because they've never had it before But those are the same people who sell film Craigslist kits for super cheap and I make money off them so I'm not complaining
I say ice-o. [editline]fuk da police[/editline]
I think you're misinterpreting the whole forums purpose, this isn't somewhere where we expect you to take incredible photos with the most amazing equipment and if you don't try your hardest we tell you off like we're your school teachers. If you aren't putting effort in, or not giving a fuck, the only one losing out is you. Happy shooting!!!
sorry I think you're the one mis-interpreting what I meant, I said I was gonna do some shots with instagram and meant that I don't give a fuck if I get criticized for using instagram, criticize the shot/shots themselves by all means and i'll take all that on board
I got a Captain mug signed by Vitaly Alexia (the romantically apocalyptic artist) at Toronto's Fan Expo yesterday. I'm pretty proud of it.
"videogame photography" is pretty interesting [t]http://i.imgur.com/gJnOV.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/nip5j.jpg[/t]
I always take photos with Skyrim, it's such a photogenic game with a nice ENB. Plus it also has a nice dof effect that even has little bokeh balls
Dear Esther I just played as a photographer. It was awesome because you can zoom with right click so it's like a 35-70. Came out with some really nice shots.
skyrim you can at least get completely free control of the camera (tfc command), that's why I love using ENB and doing photographic style screenshots in that. IMO, you can really get some great practice with angles in any game that allows free camera control without actually having to go out and take photos, been looking at some inspiring photos recently and i'm starting to realize the reason a lot of my recent shots are so well, bland, isn't so much the subject matter, rather the way in which I choose to portray the subject matter, it's become very straight forward and less experimental in technique
In the process of stripping my baby of all her skin. *Cough* [editline]27th August 2012[/editline] King me
Anyone here use Magic Lantern and shoot video with an external mic?
I tried ML but I don't shoot video with an external but if you have the "no sound" problem I read about that the "auto" function doesn't work with certain cams you have to set it manually. [editline]28th August 2012[/editline] Also I#m pondering about getting the flickr pro thingie. I did without it so far but it seems like a nice addition :(
Anyone here use Magic Lantern and shoot video with an external mic?
Yep, several times. Why?
so several camera manufacturers are putting wifi in their upcoming cameras (sony, panasonic, samsung), with the GH3 featuring perhaps the best use of it so far http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-panasonic-gh3-has-wifi-and-remote-control-applications/ you can remote control your camera with your phone! i don't know about you guys but that's a huge deal to me, having a remote with a lot of functions that you would never leave behind. definitely an idea i hope canon and nikon will latch onto for their DSLR's
Good luck with the batteries.
why would you use wifi for remote controlling a camera wouldn't bluetooth be a better way to do it
why would you use wifi for remote controlling a camera wouldn't bluetooth be a better way to do it
Because wifi has other features too. And hey, progress is progress I'm not complaining. Surely it's going to be improved upon in coming iterations

ooooooh that's shiny
Helios 44 lenses are very interesting, it turns out that if you remove the rear block of glass, the lens becomes a short telephoto.
Yep, several times. Why?
Because if I look at the audio levels on screen, when using a rode mic, they're much lower than when I go into my normal menu and view them there. In the normal menu, they're close to 0 and even peaking sometimes but the levels on screen barely make it into the green and are like -20. The mic is good enough and is only a few inches away from the actor I don't know why it's so quiet.
ooooooh that's shiny
Metholetholkeytone is really good at eating away at everything that isn't metal. :v:
I'm looking at enlarging paper, and it seems that most of what I've seen typically goes for around $80 for 25 sheets of 8x10 paper. I found a pack of 25 sheets that's going for $22, does anyone have experience with photo paper that might be able to tell me why this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381081-REG/Foma_41282_Fomaspeed_Variant_III_VC.html Costs considerably less than most of the paper I've seen?
my photography teacher is the bees knees she seems to know most of her shit, but apparantly our school got a load of stuff donated to it when they heard we did a photo course now, it's all old stuff like olympus stuff but what's this? is that yes it's 24mm om-system 2.8 selling for... £120 on eBay! and a 50mm 1.8! and a 300mm f/4.5! and why is this good? she said nobody in the school uses them and i am welcome to take them home and try them out! I thought that said Tampon for a while.
what are you talking about it is a tampon!
It's a tampon for the heavily used.
