How does that have any relation to anything?
I would assume it means getting a cushy desk job will rot the inside of your soul while you crunch numbers and push paper, desperately looking for a way to quickly escape from the unbearably boring and generic lifestyle that is slowly but surely killing you, like a cancer formed from broken dreams and the tears of your loved ones.
If it's strictly Navy tech then I guess thats alright, but if its just for tech in general, I would have gone to the AF.
Nice man, good luck! [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] UncleJimmema aren't you in the USMC?
Yes I am
Well I love ships. I love them so much. Also I didn't join marines because I was in MCJROTC in highschool last year and this year. Those classes made me not like MC. Example:Day1: MC DID THIS THIS THIS THIS AND THAT AND IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING IN OUR UNIVERSE! Day2: MC DID THIS THIS THIS THIS AND THAT AND IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING IN OUR UNIVERSE! Day3: MC DID THIS THIS THIS THIS AND THAT AND IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING IN OUR UNIVERSE! Day4: MC DID THIS THIS THIS THIS AND THAT AND IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING IN OUR UNIVERSE! And so on in that manner. So neh.
Anyone joining a combat role in the US military right now is a fool Good luck OP, it sounds really interesting. Do you have any idea specifically what you'd be working on?
Welp seeing as the whole marine corps is pretty much infantry I must be a complete moron.
Welp seeing as the whole marine corps is pretty much infantry I must be a complete moron.
yep
Well I love ships. I love them so much. What's your MOS? ASVAB Score?
What's your MOS? ASVAB Score?
Submarine electronics computer field Scored an 82 on the asvab
Submarine electronics computer field Scored an 82 on the asvab
I've been trying to get Intelligence Analyst, but with my ASVAB of 77, I don't think my ST scores would add up as well.. :suicide:
Should have joined the Marines. That's my opinion, I know a few people who have been in or are joining the Marines. It seems to turn them into really good people from their life before.
Every branch of the military, as far as I know, has had people walk away with valuable lessons. This includes the Navy, as showcased by my father.
Submarines are fucking menacing, they're just giant tubes that float around underwater.
And you can fucking live in them for months if not years how cool is that?
And you can fucking live in them for months if not years how cool is that?
And they can destroy millions of lives with a turn of a key. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
Should have joined the Marines. That's my opinion, I know a few people who have been in or are joining the Marines. Not to mention how a number of them display huge egos.
And they can destroy millions of lives with a turn of a key.
Yup, I think they are probably the world's strongest weapons. You know, the whole mobile nuclear weapons system thing.
Some people aspire to do something with their lives you know
The GI bill pays for your entire college, you make free college and then spend a 4 year term working a cooshy desk job for dank ass pay with no expenses such as housing or food, so you basicaly get free college and money to start your life out better than anyone who just went right somewhere else in life from highschool. Plus college isn't fucking cheap. You know why we keep all out remaining nukes on submarines right? So they can't be tracked by anyone. You can find a place on a map right down to the street name VIA google earth. You can't comb the entire ocean for a submarine, not only that but they can simply move if they get discovered. Keeps people from stealing the weapons and using them against the world.

The great thing about the Navy? You get free holidays, and get to visit countries when your ship docks!
Talk to your recruiter, he can explain better than I can.
So true, I've got a lot more respect for the navy than the army (still not marines though!) Marines > Navy > Coast Guard > Airforce > Army You joined at a good time, they bumped up the training to 12-13 weeks now and you'll actually recieve some combat training. It used to be just 40 rounds from an m9 and 3 from a mossburg 500! it didn't matter what you scored either!
Why is the Air Force so low? Just curious since I'm thinking of joining the Air Force for an IT based career.
The great thing about the Navy? You get free holidays, and get to visit countries when your ship docks!
Well. Apparently in the sub program your under water for most of your term. Literally.
How much do they get paid?
Apparently the most anyone gets paid is $80,000 per year. :| I can't understand how this is seen as a lot of money in America. Here, a $50,000 - $70,000 (US) is considered about average. I know a guy who went down to Antarctica for two years, and received $135,000 a year for pretty much not all that much (his highest level of education was year 11). America, I don't understand you. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] Our government pays $55k USD pay + living expenses for going to college, in addition to paying the fees, if you agree to join the military for the course of your degree +1 year. For an MD, they pay you 70k while you do your residency, which you have to do anyway (and goes for the course of your mandatory service).

Who the fuck requires that much fucking money dude? that's like 6000$ a month, I can honestly say I can live real easily off 1500-2000$ a month, with plenty of luxurys such as satalite TV, cell phone, internet, games, etc... That's an extra 4 grand to go to fuck knows what.

It wears off quickly after mct though.

Real estate particularly (most average one or two bedroom houses are easily half a million, probably closer to the million mark), but also everyday goods. For example, stable items like eggs, flour, meat, etc. are at least double the US price. 'Specialty' goods are even more. For example, I live in a two bedroom apartment, and it's about $700 a week for rent. Most uni students wouldn't be able to pay that.
Furthermore minimum wage is $15 or so to make up for this cost of living.
Yep. The minimum wage for casual workers over 21 is like $20.
Why is the Air Force so low? Just curious since I'm thinking of joining the Air Force for an IT based career.
Well from a marine stand point we think of them as pansys who are given everything as opposed to earn everything (you're called your rank day 1 of your 6 weeks of boot camp opposed to marines who arent even called marines until after the crucible. They made us earn everything we got, from the ability to blouse our boots to wearing our name tapes). They also are much less formal when it comes to rank structure, their uniforms are essentialy useless in combat (they're more designed for an office environment, as proved by their pen pockets on the sleves and legs), their PT consists of jack shit, they get hazard pay whenever they're not on an airforce base, and usually they try to one up marines all the time and fail horribly. From a normal person stand point ive got no issue. If technical work is what you enjoy and what you're good at than its perfect for you since thats primarily what the airforce deals with. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline]
Ok please. somebody tell me a little of how exactly one gets setup with this GI Bill, and yes, college is very expensive.
Its easy, with the new GI bill you just need to be active duty for 6 consecutive months and be honorably discharged. The old GI bill you need to pay in $100 a month got for 1 year than get an honorable discharge.
How much do they get paid?
I seem to recall it being around 300 - 500k per year depending on how long you've done it
My friend's cousin blew a dude on a sub, he was straight up until then.
I'm sure you've heard of TACP, hardcore shit as far as I know, and i'm pretty sure the Marines have their own TACP, is the Marines TACP training harder then the Air Forces?
In a sense yes. Marines have to pretty much be jack of all trades, so while on paper a marine may be a forward air controller, he's also a mortarmen, a heavy machine gunner, a radiomen, and a vehicle operator all in the same mission. I have a friend who's a LAV mechanic and he's currently deployed as a machine gunner and 5 ton operator on his deployment. Now the bad ass guys in the airforce are the downed airmen rescue teams (i can't remember the name exactly). They kick ass
