Yes and? Every job is stereotyped to bits, and of course they're not 100% true, that's why they're jokes, because they're wild exaggerations. Do recruiters work on quotas or something?
Yes, and the shitty recruiters who want numbers push shitty, unqualified people in only to have them discharged in basic or tech school.
Apparently the most anyone gets paid is $80,000 per year. :| I can't understand how this is seen as a lot of money in America. Here, a $50,000 - $70,000 (US) is considered about average. I know a guy who went down to Antarctica for two years, and received $135,000 a year for pretty much not all that much (his highest level of education was year 11). America, I don't understand you. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] Our government pays $55k USD pay + living expenses for going to college, in addition to paying the fees, if you agree to join the military for the course of your degree +1 year. For an MD, they pay you 70k while you do your residency, which you have to do anyway (and goes for the course of your mandatory service).
You forget one thing, in the military you already have most of your living expenses paid, so thats cash in your pocket. Also I am going to be E-2 due to completing 2 years of mcjrotc.
Why? Because you just fed him some BS which is your opinion really. You basically shit on the air force and everyone else are combat gods. Look up TACP, CCT and Pararescue and tell me they're not bad ass. Air Force is fine as a career job, and it's really encouraged. Now, UncleJimmema on the other had can talk some shit being that he's in a different branch, and he'll have that rivalry of "USAF = Chair Force" but even we've talked and his jobs damn near the same as mine (although his is more overall and inclusive while I'm specialized in Avionics) I just think it's stupid anyone who believes that the Air Force is pure pilots and deskjobs. As for horror stories, I have one. My recruiter straight up lied to me about signing something, I did and got fucked for it. I left 7 months sooner and WAS not ready. Do I regret it? Hell no. I got in that much sooner and can get out that much faster. If you talk to anyone who's military they'll warn you, cause many people get screwed whether it's minor or major. Mine wasn't bad, but I've heard worse and we all (usually) know what to look for. Basically.. don't sign a damn thing without reading it.
The Air Force is great. Both my brothers enlisted and they both have great stories and are living a damn good life. They were both college dropouts with no desired career path to go in. The Air Force set them up for the future. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline]
I was going to go into the military, but because I take prescribed meds and they don't allow you in if you take them. But I learned a lot about joining though, so keep this in consideration.
I've never heard of this before.
In a sense yes. Marines have to pretty much be jack of all trades, so while on paper a marine may be a forward air controller, he's also a mortarmen, a heavy machine gunner, a radiomen, and a vehicle operator all in the same mission. I have a friend who's a LAV mechanic and he's currently deployed as a machine gunner and 5 ton operator on his deployment. Now the bad ass guys in the airforce are the downed airmen rescue teams (i can't remember the name exactly). They kick ass
The Airforce Para-rescue Also, I was the first one to make the seaman joke.
From what I know its incredibly fucking hard to become a pilot in the air force. I hear you need a degree in engineering, acceptance to the air force academy (which requires a congressional recommendation, I think) then only 1400 people get accepted as pilots. Whereas in the army, you leave high school, go into the army, fly apaches a year later.

You need a degree, any degree as long as it's four years (I hear most take something stupid like psychology). There's either Air Force Academy (while you do military stuff as a cadet and get your degree through there, then when you graduate you're an officer), or there's doing college and ROTC and coming out ready to be an officer, or you can just do college, get a degree and then be an officer. That's what most of the pilots have told me (since I work the aircraft I can talk with them sometimes and a friend wants to be a pilot so I tried to get some secrets). Also I think the big deal there is, is that the Army has warrant officers, which aren't actual officers. In the Air Force to be a pilot you have to be an officer and officers need 4 year degrees.
Oh then its easier than I previously thought. Well I'm still going for an aerospace engineering degree, so that should help. I also have 150 hours of flight time already. The only thing I'm really worried about is my medical shit, I hear if you have a history of allergies/athesma then you'll get disqualified. I had athesma like 10 years ago and it went away after a year or two. I hope that won't keep me down. Currently the only thing keeping me down for sure is my eyesight. But I know that the USAF has allowed ASA (Advanced surface ablation, a PRK procedure which is the least amount of pain involved) for pilots. I'm gonna be getting that sometime next year or so.
So true, I've got a lot more respect for the navy than the army (still not marines though!) Marines > Navy > Coast Guard > Airforce > Army You joined at a good time, they bumped up the training to 12-13 weeks now and you'll actually recieve some combat training. It used to be just 40 rounds from an m9 and 3 from a mossburg 500! it didn't matter what you scored either!
lol marines marines are for anyone who's too retarded to get in the other branches

Be a nuke tech, the job title alone will make bitches wet.
My Dad was in the navy. They paid for his college and he worked as a engineer for them for around 22 years. Now he gets a good amount of money from the government every month.
Shoulda join the Marines. jk. Well at least you have the balls to protect my country, so thanks for doing it sir.
I always wanted to become an infantry officer... But I have diabeetus :saddowns:
lol marines marines are for anyone who's too retarded to get in the other branches
No..? You have to be pretty dedicated and have some intelligence to become a marine. The army is full of grunts that join for a few years just for the benefits, the marines are usually trained well and a step above most usual grunt work.

I want to enlist in the Marines, am I crazy? I hear from friends that have been fucked over or are in that I have a way lower chance of getting fucked over at the last second for former medications or something else like that. Can anyone verify? One of my friends was getting ready for the army for 2 years and the last second they called him and said no you can't fucking join you took these when you were a sophomore, so he tried the Marines and the way his recruiter talked it sounded like they would've let it slide but when he went to meps they said they got a specific letter from the army that says to tell him to fuck off, but apparently if he went to the Marines first he'd be in because "Marines look out for eachother."

Watch your ass.
Daaaamn. You put Air Force pretty low on that. You gotta take into considering the ones who aren't finance/food service/deskjobs in the Air Force too. Maintainers get fucked up and down daily. But I get to fix A-10s or F-15s so it's worth it. Also I realized I missed your post lower down and that's understandable. A lot of the Air Force jobs are stupid deskjobs.. the flightline is a whole different world. It's funny when some jobs work 8 hour shifts with a 1 hour PT, and a 1 hour lunch included in the 8 hours.. They'll go to the chow hall and I will too after working 12 hours, covered in hydraulic fluid and grease and they say some shit cause my uniforms dirty. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] TACP, CCT, and PJs are pretty much the top badass jobs in the Air Force, and all require you to work with other services in the field. (Not off on your own where it's safe or some shit). EOD is a pretty bad ass job too. Some say Firefighters, but I lost faith in them after they were watching us start a new engine in a jet and the engine went KABOOM and started spraying flames out the back end.. we ended up putting it out and after everyone's calmed down a bit they get out of their truck and are like "Uh did you need us for that?..." A bit like this (that's fire/flames coming out.. not afterburner) but in a jet: View YouTUBE video http://youtube.com/watch?v=7afNaRQyOxs
I'm not saying everyone in the airforce is that way, and the same doesnt hold true for the marines. We've got admin guys who go to work at 6am and are done by 2pm bitching about how long their work day is, while guys out on the flight line are working 14 hour days consistantly. I get to deal with a flight schedule, which essentialy means I never have a standard schedule other than pretty much knowing I'm going to work 10-12 hours (thats the nice thing though, I'm required to have at minimum 12 hours rest between flights).
I was thinking of doing NROTC during college and get a degree in nuclear engineering, then working on their nuclear reactors as I would have to serve 5 years active duty?
After looking at starcraft... Why would you want to be a marine?
E-3 in the Army here. Good job joining the armed forces! The Navy is nothing to laugh at, as they have the best ship in the world: the supercarrier. I hope you do well in your engineering career field!
Nearlly everyone in the Military walks away with valuble lessons. xD

I joined the army about 2 months ago and I go to basic training in September. Good luck, both my parents were in the navy and they both still work in the fields the navy trained them for.
Good luck. I'm in the Army as a 25S and there's a few navy personnel in my AIT class. From what I understand their basic is a lot easier as far as PT and stuff goes, but they're more strict about stuff like making beds and keeping wall lockers neat. I would get in shape as much as possible before shipping off to basic training, you don't want to be the guy that can't do enough pushups to past his PT test.
It's because I'm a lovable guy.

They will disqualify you for it. Take it to your grave. I just got taken off midshift since we're flying at night. Shift changes are the worst. Our commander hooked us up though and only lets us work a maximum of 12 hours but we're only required 8 hours off. I know some bases fuck their troops and make them work 16s with no weekends. That's a good way to lose quality.
