I want to join the navy as a seaman. I'm Canadian, and aboriginal. Is there a lot of racism that goes on within the Navy? I have my dad's looks (pale, brown hair) so no one would notice unless I said so, but would it be better to keep it under my hat, so to speak?
Have fun, be safe
Are you going to be seeing any combat? Sounds more deskjob-esque
There really isn't combat in the navy unless you consider sitting on a boat firing cruise missiles at middle eastern countries combat.
Wait, you can't join the Navy if you have athesma? Or does it just stop you from doing certain things?
He wants to be a pilot iirc.
He wants to be a pilot iirc.
Yeah, but does the athesma only apply to that? Like well I would want to work on their nuclear reactors if that's possible, could I do that with athesma? And according to chrome spell check athesma is not a word.

Depends if you get quota/equality benefits or not, and then it's up to you whether you take the benefits or not, keeping in mind if anyone knows you're aboriginal, they might think the only reason you're there is because of the benefits... so it's up to you.

You can't join the military period iirc.

Goddammit I spelled it wrong.

I just Googled it and apparently you can join if you can prove you are physically fit, which I should be fine with since it doesn't actively affect me during exercise.
My advice to you.. if it wasn't ever medically documented, and no one knows but say.. your parents, you never had athesma, ever, at all. They will disqualify you for it. Take it to your grave.

That's why the flightline sucks but it's still a pretty cool environment since everyone deals with the exact same thing. I just got taken off midshift since we're flying at night. Shift changes are the worst. Our commander hooked us up though and only lets us work a maximum of 12 hours but we're only required 8 hours off. I know some bases fuck their troops and make them work 16s with no weekends. That's a good way to lose quality.
Unfortunately it is documented.
However I could get several doctors to say otherwise (since now I am athesma free), and if that isn't good I could always apply for a waiver with those doctors saying.
My last physical checkup my doctor said I have the lung of a horse.
The Marines I've seen fresh out of Pendleton, and from the Recruiting Stations are fucking psychopaths.
Which is exactly why I wanna join.

Get that in writing ASAp.
Well I still have several years to go before I even apply for the military, and there are a lot of other steps I gotta overcome like my eyesight. That is hopefully going to be resolved soon.
My main concern right now is getting my degree, and seeing as I start college in the fall, I gotta focus on that.

Might wanna reconsider if you only have one lung there, buddy :v:
For both of you, like I said. Take it to your grave. If doctors never knew, nothing will ever show anywhere saying you had asthma (correct spelling!) then you take it to your grave and tell no one. My friends damn near dyslexic and he's in. There's a lot of reasons why the military won't let you in. Acid reflux for example, it won't get you kicked out, but having it as a prior condition bans you from joining.
If your recruiter cares about his numbers and you're not worthless in his eyes I'm sure he'll help you slide it under the table.. BUT if there is PROOF you have it then you are fucked. End of story.

Well in that case. I would not take any benefits or anything of the sort. Not because I want to "blend in" but because true equality means everyone is awarded according to their merit, not "oh sorry there bud, here take this"
if i were on a submarine i'd pretend it was a spaceship.
shouldn't be that hard to do

You've obviously never seen my ITN posts.

But is there anyway to get through since I'm pretty sure there is proof of my asthma. I moved a couple times so maybe papers got mixed up, but I have had it since birth and I was born in the U.S. and was held in intensive care for it, so I'm pretty sure there is proof of it. Besides the occasional asthma attacks, it doesn't affect me really. And by occasional I mean I have had one in the last 5 years, but I used to get it a lot worse as a kid.

There is tons of "racism" in the military, but not of the burn you at the stake kind. We all make fun of eachother in that sense. I know guys from mexico, guam, brazil, zimbabwe, all over. We're all friends, and we'll make fun of each other as friends do.

It's simple, when you go to MEPS dont say a damn thing. Keep it that way, and if you get an attack while in the service say it never happened before.
So true, I've got a lot more respect for the navy than the army (still not marines though!)
Marines > Navy > Coast Guard > Airforce > Army
It used to be just 40 rounds from an m9 and 3 from a mossburg 500! it didn't matter what you scored either!
This is why I have trouble respecting the Navy

yes, be prepared for a lot of bigotry, etc. most people in the military are conservatives, and they're not exactly the most tolerant people in the world.

What would happen if they found I was lying?

I dunno who to believe here :v:
But I'm still going to go in.
Born and raised on an indian reservation. For all of you reading this who grew up in a city, look at the ghetto areas, apply that to an entire town and there you have it, that's an indian reservation. What I'm saying is I want to get the fuck out of here. if I went the normal route and applied for sponsorship, well what the fuck would that get me? Desk job in Winnipeg (of all the fucking places) and that's barely half a step up.
Working on finishing high school right now then hopefully off I go. Wish me luck guys.

you have no clue what irony is do you
What would happen if they found I was lying?
You'd get disharged with a fraudulent enlisment, but trust me that NEVER happens. It's not like they can go digging through your medical records, those stay confidential. When it comes to your medical shit, they only know as much as you tell them.
What would happen if they found I was lying?
then they discharge you and your military career is over forever
I'm surprised that these people in the military are actually encouraging you to lie. I guess they have no integrity. if I was you then I'd tell them about it and try to get a waiver. they give out waivers all the time.
You'd get disharged with a fraudulent enlisment, but trust me that NEVER happens.
yes it does
It's not like they can go digging through your medical records, those stay confidential. When it comes to your medical shit, they only know as much as you tell them.
you have to release your medical records to them before joining. if you don't sign off then you're shit out of luck because they won't accept you.
Are you in the US military? Honestly Leon, are you?
Because I'm more inclined to believe a person currently and actively enlisted in the US marines then a person who is not in the military.
So would it be better to lie or get a waiver? It barely affects me, so I don't think it would be hard to get a waiver, but it was also make lying easy. It's not like I plan to do anything like infantry or anything.

I do but I admit it was pretty stupid of me to post that.
