The reality would be that chance of survival from attempting to shoot yourself in the head would be very very low. Expecially if you place the gun's barrel behind your ear so that the bullet would pass through both of the brains.
But any and all possibilities will happen in different universes simultaneously if the many worlds interpretation is correct. Even the possibility of the bullet quantum tunneling to Mars will occur in one universe, regardless of the fact that the probability of this actually occurring is infinitesimally small. [editline]12:12PM[/editline]
Anyway, can someone write up about the Copenhagen Interpretation?
The Copenhagen interpretation is that all possibilities exist simultaneously in some sort of hybrid state (like a half-dead, half-alive cat) until the waveform is collapsed by observation. More likely, however, is that tiny interactions with air molecules and such cause waveforms to collapse without any necessary observation.
Interestingly enough, I was rereading Parallel Worlds earlier, specifically the section on the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Imagine that.
You can do no wrong with some Michio Kaku
You can do no wrong with some Michio Kaku
I am verily in agreement.
I am verily in agreement.
Who is this Michio Kaku?
:smithicide:
Maybe you'll survive in another universe! :D
Immortality scares me more than death. I could never stand the thought of always being alive.
This talk of Michio Kaku reminds me that I never actually finished Hyperspace. I really should start reading that again.
So, basically, whenever you die there is another parallel universe where you lived, thus you are immortal? I understand.
Newflash: Your brain is a lightbulb. Take away the power source, it's lights out. There no arbitrary "consciousness". It can't. Hence why its only a theory, not fact.
All facts ARE theories. The only ones that arn't are Axioms. Evolution is a theory, even though we are 99.9999 percent sure of it. Creationism is also a theory, even though we are only 0.000000001 percent sure of it.
Immortality scares me more than death. I could never stand the thought of always being alive.
But if you're dead you can't have sex
There is nothing more irritating than watching someone misunderstand the definition of scientific theory.
I've always wondered: Since every particle exists only as a wave of probability, can't the universe as we know it never actually end? The most likely fate of the universe is heat death, where we expand until the universe is nothing but an incredibly voluminous cloud of particles with light years of space in between each one and the void lowering to nearly no temperature, but assuming the universe exists forever after this point, won't the particles eventually all return to a state similar to ours now? Because over an infinite period of time, no matter how small the probability, the universe must enter that state at some point.
So, basically, whenever you die there is another parallel universe where you lived, thus you are immortal? I understand.
Okay, but that still doesn't make any sense. Why is another universe created? What causes that? This is very confusing.

With a nearly infinite amount of realities, all realities which are posssible under the laws of physics must exist, even the very improbable ones. So the universe could keep repeating forever, people can become immortal etc etc.. [editline]05:49PM[/editline]
Okay, but that still doesn't make any sense. this is some deep shit
The thing I don't understand about the op is why does it have to involve suicide and that other thing is about killing a cat? Pretty morbid if you ask me
Yes that is entirely true, and that is pretty much the whole idea behind this concept. Assuming they all keep on going forever, every single one will eventually go through every single possibility. I want to find the quantum universe where I bone Natalie Portman.

I propose all the countries of the world use all of their resources and best scientists to find the quantum universe where everyone on earth gets to bone Natalie Portman
God dammit, I want a PhD in physics, and I laugh at people with philosophy PhDs, but I just realized they're becoming the same thing. [editline]12:55PM[/editline]
I propose all the countries of the world use all of their resources and best scientists to find the quantum universe where everyone on earth gets to bone Natalie Portman
Fuck you, I want the one where only I get to bone her. The one where EVERYONE gets to bone her would suck ass.
Fine, we find the quantum universe where you can bone Natalie Portman and I can bone Jessica Alba. Deal?
Neat. Nevermind, I want the universe where women have learned to reproduce with each other, Hayden Panettiere and Natalie Portman have had a child, and I get to bone her when she turns 18.
Neat.
If I don't get a nobel prize for this I'm blaming it on you. [editline]12:57PM[/editline]
Neat. [editline]12:57PM[/editline] dear god man you're a genius.
You, me, research, Nobel Prize, ultimate sex universes. We are gonna be the ultimate science team. [editline]12:59PM[/editline]
If there is an infinite number, then does that mean there's also an infinite number of universes where you do bone Natalie Portman?
Every position conceivable and more.
Well the basis of QM is probability and wave functions. In Schrödinger’s Cat, the basis is that the cat is both dead or alive, until you look in the box, and then the wave function collapses into either dead OR alive. (Schrödinger’s Cat is a cat in a box with a gun pointing at the box that will fire at a random interval. Until you look into the box, you don't know whether or not the cat is alive or dead, so it is both). For this "Quantum Immortality" to work there could be no measurements... i think... I don't understand the infinite tries thing. The spin of an electron can change, and it eventually will, so you would die sooner or later...
