The thing that makes a kit good is how well it sounds, the sound is achieved by both having great skins on the drums, but also the wood used when making the kit. The thing you should look for in a kit is that the whole kit is in pristine condition, or at least that there are no cracks or that the drum itself has been warped from poor conditioning.

how long and how well itll stay together
i paid a shitload for my drumset and its gone through everything from an idiot who hit it way too hard to an idiot who dropped the bass drum down a staircase
good cymbals are hard to find
depends on what part of the drumkit we are talking about, but usually it is the material and craftsmanship required that determine the price
good cymbals are hard to find
oh god yes, they're impossible to find at a decent price
Also, I'm planning on doing some live shows with live drumming and synths at my left side to mess around with. What are some good pieces of hardware that could help me fulfill an ideal ambient/sample based sound?
I'm assuming you have a sequencer if not get one
Some synths here and there wouldn't go amiss and lots of delays
get a looper
and some cool stuff like shakers
Korg kaoss pads are really cool too for live stuff
i paid like 200 for a ziljan cymbal and it cracked after 2 shows i threw it at someone out of anger
makes a great clang sound when you hit it tho
Just wondering, to you guys who can sing, how'd you learn how to?

Can you give an example of a hardware sequencer you could use for live performance and how it would be used?

Tangerine dream used to use them live, check this out

Fairlights often used in the 80s, but sequencers have a wide range of usage live if you know their application properly. I couldn't tell you a good example though, not that clued in with what is a good sequencer

If you got a music ear you can pretty easily sing with some practice and getting used to.
That's how it was for me, I could always make the tones I just wasn't confident enough and didn't know my voice enough.
my friend just released his first hit single

I like the interesting microtuning choices you guys made with the different instruments. The way they clash is an interesting way to represent the cognitive dissonance in asians living in suburban landscapes. Stripping away most of the bass in the mix is an awesome way to represent how many of the "base" values of suburban Americans are missing today.
Nah but you guys should probably tune your instruments or something.
matching pitches w/ a keyboard is the simplest way to learn how to sing. practice basic arrpregios, octave jumping, etc

Its not my band. I would never be apart of that
So I just found out that Izotope Iris is an amazing plugin.

It's so much fun to just load samples in and play with them. I'm just hooked on this thing :v:. Here are some dumb things I made using it:

the bass is made using three bass samples and a sawtooth wave using one instance of iris (it's processing at the time of posting)

This whole thing too is one instance of Iris. Made with harmonica, wind and truck samples.

Jokes aside I have a remix coming out for his track "Happy Ending (Ft. Andrew Farr)" on Plasmapool! :v:
So I got offered to become a pianist for some church in my area, its paying, but I'm not sure if I should even take it based off my own beliefs. Thoughts?

It depends on the church/parish itself, but I'd say go for it. It'll be good practice, they won't ask much of you (not that I'm saying you can't perform to a high standard, but there won't be much pressure), you may get extra work with school choirs etc that use the church, and it's paid so really it's just a job at the end of the day.

Do it, you're not becoming a vicar
[editline]17th May 2013[/editline]
There's nothing wrong with being a church pianist without being religious if you think of it in the way that you are helping people reaffirm and be confident in their belief system in the same way that you are confident of your own beliefs
religion as an institution and a system may be a blight upon the world in certain ways, but religion as a community can be incredibly affirmative

Go for it, I've played at my church a few times and I'm not a believer. It's mostly a place where old people or younger people gather for I dunno, traditional purposes.
giving up your principles and ideals is just part of becoming a professional musician
Well what I plan on doing is whenever the guy ends up calling me about the position, I will let the guy know that I'm agnostic. I am interested in the position, but I want to be respectful to him, and be upfront with him. If its a problem so be it, but if not then great. I just mainly concern since I live in the bible belt and around where I live, I only know a few churches that hire non-believers. And usually when they do they tend to be aggressive about trying to convert them.
I'll keep you guys updated about what ends up happening.
Sounds wise, definitely let him know your beliefs won't change as well
Do I keep my Fender Telecaster 2002 MIM or replace it with an Epiphone Sheraton II?

Do it. Include a bunch of weird subliminal stuff in your performances.
