I've been trying to expand my sound so I decided to experiment with some genre's and this is the result!
Does anyone have any advice for looking for hip hop samples that AREN'T funk and soul? Every single place I look online it's the same shit over and over, but I have zero interest in using any of it. I do like using things from jazz, bossa nova, and old obscure soundtracks, but obviously those aren't very prominent on the internet.

If you know any hip hop tracks (from the bigger artists, anyway) that use the kind of samples you're looking for, you can look up the samples they use on whosampled.com. Some albums have sections on their wikipedia pages where it shows samples used, but that's often only with the classic albums. Or you could always just listen to some jazz and shit if you're into it, and find stuff to sample yourself.
Why use samples specifically? Just listen to jazz/classical/... and rip out the samples you want.
I wanna know what's the actual deal with my music, aside from the fact that I need music theory lessons, which I'm soon going to look up next month.
I heard something about mastering issues, but certainly, I don't know what makes my music so shitty, specially on last releases where in fact I feel they shouldn't be.
I want someone to name examples, and tell me what's going on in there with those.

Done.

Free and decent. The lessons and exercises will, at the very least, get you a good basis.
Do you play any instruments?
Theory certainly comes together easier if you put it into the context of an instrument, even if that means the Piano roll in FL studio.
Hi, new to this section.
I'm looking to buy a 76 key keyboard that's not so much for beginners but rather mid range. Any recommendation's? I'm interested in interfacing the MIDI with my computer, and I'm sure most modern ones have that capability, I just don't want to spend too much or too little money on a mid-range keyboard.
It'll make it a lot easier for us to help find you a good keyboard if you can tell us your exact budget. :)

Right, $350 is my budget.
Hey, I found out that my roommate makes music. What do you guys think of this?
anybody know of any good vst/software hammond organ synths? i remember dicking around with an extremely realistic one at college the other day and i can't remember for the life of me where it came from

The Native Instruments B4 is good
also the one that comes with Pro Tools is sick
i was dicking around with reason's synths and found their hammond, i'll try native intruments out
Don't practice for 4 days and suddenly can't hit a top c anymore. I hate how fast my range and tone deteriorate on brass without practicing (or rather just playing) once a day. I also stress because I'm aiming for a scholarship and there aren't many opportunities to practice on the lead up to the audition. Not to mention I haven't even touched a piano in like a month. Never realised how much I'd miss playing until I suddenly can't after moving into accommodation at uni. :(
I always wanted to learn piano as well as compose crappy music for game jam entries but I live in a studio apartment and have no room so I bought one of these. Only having access to a couple octaves probably isn't ideal but I think this is the best I can do for the money.

It's ugly as fuck but whatever.
Also I was thinking of using Reaper since it's kind of cheap, has anyone used it?
I use Reaper and I absolutely love it, the only thing that I'm not overly fond of is automations but that is because I've just recently found out about it. The Piano roll is really good and the plugins that comes with the program are solid as shit, I would recommend it 9/10 times to people (but that is because it doesn't come with as good plugins as cubase and logic, which is expected though since there's a huge difference in price).
Can someone help me figure out the name of the instrument at the beginning of this song? I know I've heard it before but I honestly can't figure out the name. I think it's a glockenspiel, but it sounds a bit off for that.

I could be misinterpreting your intended use here but rating my post optimistic is kind of depressing, I don't really care, the goals I set are very small so I'm confident I can do it regardless, but crushing someones goals like that is kind of a dick move even if it's a meaningless rating. Who are you to tell them they can't achieve something?

you're looking too deep into a rating
Yeah, I'm not offended or anything, I was just rambling for the sake of rambling.
does anyone know of an electronic drum kit that you can just buy parts of? I have a pretty limited budget, and only a small amount of space to put them, and I only really need a kick, snare and hat. Or, maybe a small drum pad with just the essentials on it, then a kick for the floor?
Although it sounds kinda stupid, I think it would help speed up my work flow, actually having a drum kit to play on.
I have a snare drum that you can record with that has a very nice feel to it, feels like the real thing. Think it is called roland tdm-5 or something, I'll see if I can find the box for it. How big budget do you have? I live in Swden so shipping shouldnt be too expensive

pming you about it now

REAPER is cheap but it easily one of the best and most capable DAWs out there. The price tag really doesn't do it justice or help its image, if they slapped a £500 pricetag on it people would start taking it seriously.
I've been using it professionally for about 2 years now.
I used to use Cubase but ditched it, it was getting too expensive keeping up with upgrades. I use ProTools on a regular basis still (Because I have to), but honestly I prefer REAPER.
If you have a pair of 1080p screens, this theme is fantastic:

If you intend on learning piano with two hands, you'll have tough time with just two octaves. There are other options (49, 61, ... midi keyboards) for the same amount of money when it comes to learning keys. This isn't about crushing dreams, but I can ensure you that trying to learn an instrument with sub-par means is not motivating at all.
Now if you just want to play some simple melodies or chords, that's fine, you can do that, but it'll take a stellar effort to turn yourself in a somewhat complete piano player with this thing (in this sense I agree with the optimistic rating). I don't want to stop you from learning piano, but I'm just giving a heads up that you'll only be able to learn a subset of what constitutes "playing piano" if you restrict yourself to two octaves.
But by all means, just have fun with the thing, enjoy the trip and keep at it. You'll soon know for yourself if you're satisfied with this gear or want more keys...
Oh yeah, by learning piano I didn't really mean it in a complete sense, I just want to have fun with it.
Thanks for the theme Tezzanator, that's sexy as fuck.
Does anyone know of a good-ish free keyboard or piano VST? All the ones I find sound like ass or don't work that great with Reaper.
I found tons of good synths though.
Never found a good free piano VST, although Reason has a very nice sampler called NN-XT that has some good piano sounds, combine that with ReWire and you're set.
I seldom bother with achieving a nice piano sound digitally, because unless you have this 100GB VST that costs $1000 you'll always hear that it's digital.
