so my power supply blew out and i cant find a replacement so im gonna make a new one hope i dont electrocute myself [editline]31st July 2013[/editline]
Does anyone know any good resources on FM synthesis? It seems like it's used a lot in Dubstep, I'm a Dubstep producer myself, and I want to learn it. I always get crappy sounds cause I don't know what I'm doing so I want to get a grasp on what I'm acutally doing. I'm using FM8 btw.
you might want to look into getting a calculus degree then to understand fm you need to understand differential equations you have a wave and using fm you modulate that carrier wave using a modulating wave generated by an equation: here Fc and Fm are frequencies of carrier and modulator, I is modulation index ( I = d / Fm ), and the whole extra letters are bessel functions funnily enough the DX7 and the FM8 which emulates the Yahama DX7 arent even FM but phase modulation so rofl
funnily enough the DX7 and the FM8 which emulates the Yahama DX7 arent even FM but phase modulation so rofl
Ah, it figures. Sounds pretty similar to Massive's Phase modulation. Also I found granular synthesis (Alchemy as instrument) a really cool thing but I can't make full use of it. There's so many varieties I could do. I like it because I would like to produce "glitchy" tracks.
Casio actually used to make some decent phase distortion synthesizers from the CZ series which is a cheap option
I don't think it's worth posting it in GD, people who post their shit in there usually don't get as much of a response as you'd get in MGR.
That's right. In GD you might not get any responses, but in MGR you can get as much as 2 responses.
That's right. In GD you might not get any responses, but in MGR you can get as much as 2 responses.
Yeah it's a shame really people only really give a shit about their own music in here to be honest :C but I'll admit I only ever C&C particular people who I enjoy listening to (Rich, Zillamatic, Bull, Renin and Cruma (No offense to everyone else))
So one of my sounds on soundcloud got reposted and suddenly ~100 plays outta nowhere.
Does anyone here play doumbek? I'm about to start learning how to play and I was simply curious if anyone around has experience.
Does anyone know of any good tutorials for FL Studio? I'm sure it'll be easy to use in time, but as it stands I have no idea how to do anything other create (super short) beats with the default windows. [t]http://puu.sh/3KfhX.png[/t]
Do you know of the Piano Roll window? If not, right click a desired channel to bring up a menu, then click "Piano Roll." You use the piano roll to make longer, more complex beats, as well as melodies and such. Get real familiar with it. It's one of the main tools you'll be using. Anyway, does anyone know of a good forum/community for electronic artists looking for feedback on their tracks and such? I know of Trance Addict and OCRemix, but both sites are a bit unreliable for feedback. There's tons of threads of artists showing off a track or two, looking for some feedback and their thread has tons of views and zero posts. Facepunch tends to be the same way. It seems like everyone sticks to the megathreads.

I've honestly never used the site. Thanks for the info.
Looks like I'll have to learn how to Reddit. I've honestly never used the site. Thanks for the info.
Yeah I never used it before I checked it out, I only actually ever signed up there because Madeon did an AmA there, and then as time went on I started posting/asking around on there, it's an extremely useful forum for production resources and tutorial links. I suggest anyone looking to improve their skills in the production of EDM to sign up there, it's very useful
The Feedback Thread there is great. Tons of people collaborating with each other on feedback and such. It's a pretty good system.
The Feedback Thread there is great. Tons of people collaborating with each other on feedback and such. It's a pretty good system.
Thank me later :v:
/r/edmproduction is fun My favorite thing to do there is to offer advice on creativity and enter bizarre tracks into the sample pack competition. :v:
how does feedback thread on reddit work can we incorporate it into this forum
how does feedback thread on reddit work can we incorporate it into this forum
Well they are forced to C&C at least two tracks every time they post their own material. I'm all for saying that we incorporate it into this forum but I seriously doubt anyone would be bothered too apart from the odd few who genuinely give a shit about the others here
Preordered ableton push and bought ableton 9 suite yesterday. Fucking around with TouchOSC + LiveControl on my ipad until the push shows up. It's sooo rad. Getting more familiar with Ableton and kind of wish I had switched from Logic a lot earlier now. I've had Maschine for a long time and really enjoyed using it but the process of getting from an idea sketched out on maschine to a proejct in a real DAW was always kind of a pain and felt really disconnected, so I'm fucking stoked to be using something akin to maschine that is paired with a real DAW soon. Can't wait for the push to get here!
Was supposed to ship today but my bank thought a charge from germany was fishy and declined it, so now I have to wait for them to try to charge it again tomorrow. It should be in my hands soon though!
ANy body know what the best voice mic for under 100 dollars would be? its going to be for freestyling /rapping [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] Also how do you guys go about promoting yourself? I dont have any money or any equipment but I want to myself out there and force myself to become what ive been dreaming way too long about. can someone please help me with getting started on that?

I dont have any money or any equipment but I want to myself out there and force myself to become what ive been dreaming way too long about. can someone please help me with getting started on that?
It's not easy at all. When I used to use AcidPlanet, there was a decent way of going about it. Every time I uploaded a new track, I would always indicate in the description that any users who left reviews on the track would have the favor returned. Everyone sort of helped each other out this way. I didn't really have a massive following or anything, but it did help. I also discovered my all-time favorite electronic artist there. Sadly, he removed his profile. Luckily I still have most of the tracks he released on my hard drive. He's seriously talented in my opinion. Anyway, the edmproduction sub-reddit seems like a good place to start. It's a similar system to what I described about Acid Planet.
Well they are forced to C&C at least two tracks every time they post their own material. I'm all for saying that we incorporate it into this forum but I seriously doubt anyone would be bothered too apart from the odd few who genuinely give a shit about the others here
It's the sad truth. Plus, the way Reddit's boards work is different from Facepunch. The system they use in r/edmproduction is pretty much catered towards it. We'd have to come up with a slightly different system to make it work with Facepunch's boards. But yeah, probably not worth the effort.

For live use? Save More, or buy used. SM58s are a good bet if you are not quite sure what you want, I don't consider them a "good sounding" mic though, their presence peak can either be a godsend or make the source sound boxy. My alternative picks would be: AKG D5 (~$50-$90) Sennheiser E945 (~$210) Audix OM5 (~$180) Audix OM7 (~$230) I'm not 100% positive on the prices as I'm in the Uk, I'd consider them all better sounding mics than the SM5x range. That's not to say the '57 and '58 are bad mics, they are just a "Jack of all trades master of none", every self respecting sound tech should have a few in their collection (I have loads in my hire stock) but there's almost always a "better" choice.
Anyone here play harmonica? I have been learning to play for a few months now. I have a Hohner Chrometta 8 in C and a Hohner Pocket Pal in C. I am also looking to get a Hohner Marine Band, probably in the key of D. For the most part I practice by playing sheet music I find on the internet. I wind up playing a lot of Final Fantasy tunes :v:. I am also starting to learn how to play blues riffs on my Pocket Pal. It sounds pretty good for a 5$ harmonica and everything is in tune and plays/bends fine even though the reed plate has turned green from rust.
I used an old harmonica once for a drone piece I did worked really well

He only uses vinyl, plus makes his stuff on an MPC, so it's pretty 90's :v:
They have a pretty big record of guilds to surf through. I suggest going there is you are planning to discover yourself a guild ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.d3joy.com/ http://www.sellgw2.com/

I can sort of improvise with it, but I haven't really mastered any specific techniques or anything.

Any recommendation on controllers for an ambient producer? :v: I want to start doing live stuff so something that's able to store a LOT of pads/synths/sounds, maybe a kaosspad?
