that dude's post was dumb, but you dont have to say things like that :(
what's wrong with Death Grips the fanbase is admittedly shitty but they make alright music
their fans (you), their concept, and their image are all so bad and harmful that i refuse to listen to it, to support it in any way.

you're part of the problem by even talking about them [editline]23rd July 2013[/editline] acknowledging hype train artists is buying into the hype train
i dont get it, why cant i just listen to the music and ignore the rest of it, how am i spreading a problem if i am a dead end hype doesnt always mean bad, stuff can not live up to the hype and still be good
hype doesn't mean it's bad music but it is a bad CULTURAL PHENOMENA. put it this way: hype is the product of marketing. marketing has it's place, saying "check this out!" blah blah blah. There has to be some sort of way to filter quality from the bottom of the barrel stuff. This sort of worked in the music industry of the 70s, SORT OF. The issue with marketing is what always matters the most in marketing is the STORY these days! Since you can no longer just throw a single on the radio to see if it catches on, you need to create "buzz" around the "band" rather than just releasing their music and letting that speak for itself. Story is what gets people "interested" in a band, and guess what, the "interesting story" of how an artist made their music has NOTHING to do with the quality of it! Not only that, but this encourages deceptive practices and harmful artistic mindsets, like the old fucking ass shit that is the NMH story about Jeff Magnum being in his closet to write that album and all that bullshit. It's got NOTHING to do with the quality of the music, yet that is the sole reason that these records succeed. It's a fuckin' chain of command that goes something like this. "a good story" = views for music blogs and purchases for music magazines (lol) = record labels sign artists that they think have a good story or image to get "easy" press = artists start focusing more on image and their "narrative" than their music = music that is being promoted by media outlets is story focused rather than quality, or even originality by listening to the music, by buying it, by talking about it (and thus spreading it to more listeners), you are an enabler, you are the reason this "formula" is still in one piece. Even as only a peripheral fan you are still racking up downloads, you are still getting them listens on spotify, or last.fm, etc, you are telling the label, "hey this strategy still works!" It is your responsibility as a fan of music to care more about the music than the story, to not read about the fight that the guys from oasis got in, to not check out the new "original and cutting edge" release from some tired band that's on a MAJOR label. It's your responsibility to say, "these artists are okay, but what about great art, original art, NEW art, new concepts" which none of these outlets or labels have ANY concern about. so in summary, why does it matter that you listen to these shitty hype bands, even if they are good? because they are the product of a corrupt and broken system that churns out unoriginality and promotes stagnation rather than promotes quality, new music as it should, and by listening to this music, even tangentially, you are a part of it. I can see where you're comin' from but what if you're aware that you enjoy the image of DG? i think that is part of DG as much as their music is, in my opinion. When I ask someone "What do you think of Death Grips?" I guess it wouldn't hurt, and would make sense actually ask "What do you think of Death Grips' music?" since (I'm not saying this is a special trait of them) are kind of multifaceted with their attitude, their music, their ARG stuff, their history - their image. So, would it be okay to enjoy Death Grips and be aware of their "marketing" trickery? Wouldn't it just be their art, rather than their marketing?
i think it's good that you are honest about it, but music should not be about image. when image overtakes the music, that's a big problem to me. I get it when it's a side thing, like how goofy the damned look, or how crazy a sex pistols concert is, or whatever, but the music is still the central key. as far as i can tell people like posting pictures of mc ride, talking about death grips, and taking screenshots of music videos and telling "funny stories" than they do listening to the music. I'm saying the only "okay" thing to do, in my eyes, is to not listen to them at all, to not talk about them (at least not in a positive or neutral way) and to say "we don't like what you are doing (regarding their concept as a whole)". I guess I can see for some people it's too late, they listened and they like it, in which case, fine, I'm not saying you absolutely can't listen to it, but personally I have made a choice to ignore and/or discredit them completely. Above are my reasons for being somewhat passionate about this, and if you don't feel that same way then that's okay, but I wish "you" did. I wish people would stop listening to these bands, stop saying "well everyone is talking about them, I had to check them out" and that sort of bullshit. I wish people would think for themselves, ultimately. I think by buying into this image marketing and buying into/acknowledging trend artists is the exact opposite of this and to me that causes music, and cultural, stagnation, something that I really can't stand. Also above I stated simply by listening to them, you a part of it, you are buying in, so in that regard, asking what one thinks of their music is as well.
today on vedicardi logic 101: talking about a band that has had a hype means that you are giving in to the hype therefor you dont actually like the band

Becoming known more for their image than their music?
Whenever I find a band I like, I'm always conflicted because I think of what you say Vedi and I just go "Is this the right way? Did I find music correctly this time?" and I don't even understand what you mean by discover music by yourself and I think I do but then I'm like "no, this probably wasn't right." and then I'm confused. Can you make a scenario of finding music for yourself so I can see what you mean and not be tormented anymore. srs
bands this applies to: any artist on a major label less than 20 years old (daft punk, kanye west, etc) artists on large independents more than 10 years old (4AD, Merge (some exceptions to this exist, ie subpop)) actually thinking about it now that covers pretty much everyone. Even Grimes is on 4AD
