Wouldn't you argue that Death Grips suffer the same pitfalls as some punk bands then? Becoming known more for their image than their music?
Hmm... Yes, but most of those bands have broken up by now, and resented that. Death Grips is a current band. The whole point of Death Grips is they created their image where it was forced upon bands like Fugazi.
I just find music I like and listen to it
do you just buy those "10 Mystery CDs for $10" packs and thats how you found music
today on vedicardi logic 101:
talking about a band that has had a hype means that you are giving in to the hype therefor you dont actually like the band
thought u were better than this... also nice edit lol
but yeah that's literally it. acknowledging a hype band = you are a part of the hype, you are talking about the band. "so many people are talking about this i have to check it out" so many people = you

last.fm recommendations, searching record bins, independent research
jokes on u vedi i liked death grips before they broke through ;)
my personal favorite music discovery "strategy" for a very long time was just going onto a music blog and downloading anything and nearly everything. hard to do that these days.
I just find music I like and listen to it
wtf how can u listen to music you like??
jokes on u vedi i liked death grips before they broke through ;)
i just search for emo violence on bandcamp
Whenever I find a band I like, I'm always conflicted because I think of what you say Vedi and I just go "Is this the right way? Did I find music correctly this time?" and I don't even understand what you mean by discover music by yourself and I think I do but then I'm like "no, this probably wasn't right." and then I'm confused.
Can you make a scenario of finding music for yourself so I can see what you mean and not be tormented anymore. srs
I listed a few things in my previous post there, but really what it comes down is searching for music on your own. Going out to shows and seeing NEW bands who have 100 fans total, searching tags on last fm, finding music blogs and just picking up whatever looks like it could be interesting, etc. It takes more effort and time than just reading noisey or whatever but to me it is much more gratifying.
i just search for emo violence on bandcamp
lol yes. legit bandcamp can be a very very good music discovery tool
[editline]23rd July 2013[/editline]
i can not stress enough how a lot of my music taste came from going to the blogs "the vault" and "street metal onslaught" and just downloading anything that had a tag that interested me (primarily "female vocals" and "punk"). i found some of my favorite bands there, and was able to download some albums that have since been nearly wiped from history (which I have attempted to reupload)
also another personal favorite method is going to record stores and digging through the "local" bin particularly for 7"s. There was a time where I picked out roughly 50 local 7"s and spent about a full hour at the listening station at this record store picking out stuff I liked.
search for a genre on bandcamp and download everything thats available for free
you literally cant go wrong with that
again im very like... military and kinda serious about this sort of thing. It's a big part of my life or whatever so yeah. I understand why others don't see it the same way, why they don't care as much, don't feel the need to put in that level of effort. Nothing I can do about that.
what about not giving bands a try because the sample a blog provided was not interesting you. is that a shame?
search for a genre on bandcamp and download everything thats available for free

yeah honestly, it's like rollins said (paraphrasing), "ive never regretted a record Ive bought, only ones I didnt"
what about not giving bands a try because the sample a blog provided was not interesting you. is that a shame?
well... i dunno. id say its always worth downloading it.. it's free and all, and for me there have been many instances where at first i didnt like a record but then found one song I liked a lot on it, and then went back and came to love the whole thing. obviously i dont have the time to listen to everything so ive taken this approach with a lot of the stuff in my library.
I'm changed, im leaving for bandcamp in the morning and I won't be back until next spring.
Keep warm, the winters are cold
Take_Opal
like even when im listening to local 7"s ill always listen to both sides for at least a few seconds just in case
[editline]23rd July 2013[/editline]
and no joke ive found some of my all time favorite records that way
[editline]23rd July 2013[/editline]
the way i found one of my favorite bands of all time is, when i was 12, typing "videogames" into the itunes music store search bar hoping to find like the legend of zelda soundtrack or some shit. that changed my life lol

the record in question
are the protomen like, the stupid video games version of Death Grips to you vedi?
honestly all i know about them is that gman listens to them and thats enough for me not to care about them
my personal favorite music discovery "strategy" for a very long time was just going onto a music blog and downloading anything and nearly everything. hard to do that these days.
my strategy is anytime someone mentions something I haven't heard of before I just go and listen to it no matter what it is and then decide that it's shit even if it was actually kinda alright
I'm about to go on a flight to New Jersey does anyone know what shit I should do there?
I'm about to go on a flight to New Jersey does anyone know what shit I should do there?
great advice guys thanks
what in the yao ming is going on here...
thunder storms in london then essays on Death Grips.
find me some good modern funk :3
Also above I stated simply by listening to them, you a part of it, you are buying in, so in that regard, asking what one thinks of their music is as well.
idk i just try to stay out of the hype machine completely by not caring about it
its just not interesting to me to perpetuate that hype, its not conducive to anything substantive when it comes to talking about music. when people share images or "memes" about artists theres no real conversation going on there, just reiteration of hype. this happens a lot on tumblr, the emphasis is to make something iconic and to pull as much cultural capital as possible, rather than making a meaningful connection with its audience.
still havent listened to like 3/4s of the records that are popular on the intrnet blogosphere or w/e
yeah that's exactly my point, what I think people should do; ignore it and think for yourself
I really don't understand how that hype manages to spread with a few images though... it's just sad that the jokes about liking an artist are what appeal to people rather than enjoying music for themselves.
electro-funk just isn't the synth funk of the 80s.. that's the good stuff :-)
