So sometime around march, (26th is my birthday) My dad is giving me his Roland TD-30KV V-Pro Series Electronic Drum set, it comes with drum mics, couple of drum sticks. Also it has a whole bunch of upgraded pads, and extra shit it comes with like a (I think) The Roland SPD-30 octo pad. My family is a bunch of musicians and since I ALWAYS wanted to play drums, my dad is passing these down to me. But here is the problem, I've hardly ever played drums. I am just worried that with all this shit, I am going to get confused and not learn anything. I guess what I am asking is what are some good beginner tricks and songs to learn how to play? Is all of the stuff he's giving to me is to much for a beginner?
Nothing is too much for a beginner. I'm not a drummer but just try shit you like? This goes for p much any instrument ever. Mess around with it, pick up theory if you want to get really serious but that is pretty much it. Lessons are always nice if you want to get really serious. Perhaps ask your dad? No idea to be honest what you should do.
hey guys do you want to listen to me trying to sound like boris because if you do you can

Start up a metronome and just play quarter notes on the snare along with the metronome, then start realizing the use of your other limbs to create something a little bit more appealing. Listen to some music, and discover patterns that drummers use throughout songs and learn them. Then again, getting a teacher is a lot more helpful.

If you guys like Industrial NIN or ambient type stuff, you could check out my friends music He does all kinds of stuff varying from 8-bit to ambient electronic http://sefiros.co.uk/ He needs help with a kickstarter to help bring out his newest album he just finished. https://www.facebook.com/events/262694350572799/?previousaction=join&source=1 I know it seems like a shameless plug, but he makes great music so I thought why not.

Regarding learning how to drum, you could always try White Stripes' songs (no offense to Meg - after all, Jack wanted the percussion to be simplistic) EDIT: Call it silly but after I had to sell my drumset I mostly played Rockband drums, which I do think helped me maintain some semblance of rhythm.

Getting basics down first will help MUCH more than learning songs, at least for drums. also I accidentally left liars on when I went to go see snarky puppy live and now my last.fm is fake
Are there any bands considered math rock that don't have shitty vocals or all instrumental? (Except Slint). I really like the instrumental parts of most math rock, but in my opinion a lot of bands have annoying vocals like TTNG.
Tera Melos, maybe Owls and American Football
owls and american football are sterotypical whiny math rock
Actually, try June of 44 if you like Slint. I'm not a huge fan, but they're worth a listen.
I wouldn't consider june of 44 or slint math rock though
also I accidentally left liars on when I went to go see snarky puppy live and now my last.fm is fake
Oh, dang son. Hella sick. It seems like quite an experience in the youtube vids.
