It is still goofy though.
quite goofy

being vaguely fallout-esque doesn't make them not goofy

I'd like to ask you about your bakelite fetish, but first, could you make a functional framing hammer with a claw in this style? How much would you charge me for one?

how much would you be willing to pay? the more you pay the more intricate it becomes, and the rarer the parts used become
it takes a lot to find the parts. it'll be very hard to balance it correctly, too. it''ll be heavy as hell but it'll hammer well
Patterns are an equally valid term, pretty much all the friends i have who are involved in sewing, dressmaking etc etc call them patterns. Fabric Schematic is pretty much using big words to make it sound more technical.
I know they are called patterns. I was joking, I guess that was not apparent enough, lol.

I am assuming it would be heavy huh... I was thinking something very industrious/ atomotive, like maybe some motorcycle carb attached to an aluminum handle. Something along the size of a stiletto framer. And maybe try to get the head down to about 2lbs if possible. I think it would also be cool with some small exhaust pipe looking things coming off the head for a claw, and to just make it functional as well, so I can hold it comfortably. If you could rig a holder for a tool belt for it that would be cool too, so I dont drop it. I also thought about it and the claw doesn't have to be functional. Just has to look like one kinda.
As far as money, in a couple weeks I may have something. But if you like bakelite we can work out a trade, plus cash or whatever. I'd hook you up wit Paypal part of the money before you make it too.

Doesn't have to be exact, I'd leave your artist rendition to decide what will act and look best. Try to keep light, but if it goes heavy, I'll just use it as a single jack for bolts. Just basically has to have the same form factor of a framer. The drawing is just my basic idea. Let me know if your interested and well continue in PM.
Not the most DIY thing in the world, but I saw the biggest lathe I've ever seen last week in an FMC technologies building.Machining 9 ton sections of stainless like it was nothing

Industrial porn! :)
Guys, quick metal question:
The site that I purchase materials off of doesn't sell AISI 1040 Steel, but they do sell 1045.
Is there a dramatic difference between the two, or am I good?
Should be just a small increase in carbon content. Slightly harder to work but not much when comparing to 1040.
Can I ask what you are making?
Cleaning out phone camera

Making really small tongs for really small projects. The larger stock next to it are the actual size tongs but I guess I forgot to take a picture of that.
I have this knife I got from my Uncle and I want to clean it up and make it look new.

I don't know much about it at all but a friend said I could use a wire brush to clean all the rust off the handle and give it a new coat of paint after that.
I'm wondering if anyone knows any good ways I could possible touch it up.

My wire brush seems to remove the paint when I tested it, so I guess the bigger question would be how would I paint it?
Does anyone know any good solar panel providers? I'm planning to start constructing a mobile home when I get to high school so I don't need to pay any rent for when I go to college.
Like this guy.

Except that the only things that would cost me top-dollar are the solar panel. Hooray for having a dad with loads of wood and has plumming/wiring knowledge!

Still brainstorming around the idea, but I plan building this desk when I get home from my studies overseas. Darker gray boxes are all the electronic stuff which are in real life measurements, all which are measured in cm.
Cm! what is that? :P the only measurement i know is mm! ;)
Haha, yeah. :D
Anyone of you creative persons have any ideas I could implement? I already have a false wall in the drawer which I designed.
Current project, I've been working on this on and off for around 2 months.

Should I make a thread with progress photos when it's finished?

You could build speakers into it which lift up from being flush with the top

Are you planning on clawing the feet? Looks nice.
[editline]17th November 2012[/editline]
I remade my wife a new shelf for her collection of cans, so they could all be in one place. SInce this is the entire "series" of them, that's as big as it needed to be. It is made of 1x 6 redwood, and the bracket is made of planed douglas fir. I drilled holes all around the edge and put pop rivets 1/2 way down into the wood for decor, then finished the front with chrome, and finished the wood with a clear polyurethane coat, and stained the bottom of the shelf with red mahogany so it was darker on the bottom.

I hate clawed feet. We used to have a table like that and when I stumbled out of bed to use the restroom in the middle of the night, I would always think a panther was about to eat me.

Interesting. Did you carve the legs down or jig them to similar specs?

Continue with the wire brush. Then get some paint remover and spray the handle with it. Rinse it off with water/repeat till the paint is all gone. Then hit it with some 180 gritt sandpaper. Wrap a string around the blade tip and use one of the serrations to hold it. Tie it to a post or branch or something outside so it will hang down. Use masking tape to cover all of the blade. Hit the handle with a couple light even coats of red oxide to prevent rusting. Spray some red oxide on something nearby, and then come back in an hour. Touch the red oxide you sprayed elsewhere - if it is sticky and leaves a fingerprint, your good to paint. Spray some light coats of glosss black enamel onto the handle. Cover it evenly and lightly with dust coats. Let it dry for about 6 or 7 days. After about a week, sand the black down with some 300gritt or higher to scuff it a bit, then spray a clear enamel over it. Let it dry 3 or so more days. Ensure that you brush any paint dust away between coats. get some automotive polish, and a soft rag, and polish off the handle. Then wax it if you want. That's all.
