A friend asked if I could print him a bicycle chain themed keyring. Ordinarily I'd have told him it was too much effort... but it got me thinking about printing a chain. It's not going too badly so far, although the pillars are causing me grief.

here's a few of the pieces printed so far, the left stack are an earlier run which was too small and not very chain shaped.
teeny update on the tank i was given: everything's going quite swell now. bought a new heater (150w) and replaced the gravel. no more leaks :rolleye:
bought a couple more fish yesterday.
one siamese fighting fish
two mollies (siler/dalmation)
two cherry barbs
one gold veil angelfish
it's far too late to get sharks now sadly, they'd probably eat the shrimp and tetras. guppies would be cool too but the fighting fish would be bugging them all the time :(
i'll get pictures sometime maybe
I built a dining room table that is diner-style.
I used hinges to bracket it to the wall so it would fold down and out of the way if I want to have a large gathering or something. The leg is a 2x4 with cabinet grade 3/4" ply built in a square around the bottom. Leg got painted with an oil based white to disguise its 2x4ness.

Mounted to wall:

You lift up the table, then move the leg and allow the table to collapse against the wall, and store the leg behind it.
I then took some dark red 1Shot paint, and mixed it with thinner, and linseed oil. I brushed it on, and spent about 30 minutes making sure I wiped it all off.

Set the table thing on it for effect, then went to Oreilly's to get 36' of 3/8" chrome wheel well molding. This is the stuff people put on their civics in lavish amounts to make it look - like - I don't know - a jaguar? I don't get it. Either way, it has a real world use - and that's furniture. I've used it on shelves and other things in the past. Love the stuff.

I wrapped two layers along the top edge, then covered the frame with two more layers. Turned out just like I wanted. Very old-school looking. Next comes the clear coat over the whole thing.

That trim stuff is fucking awesome looking, great job!
[editline]30th August 2013[/editline]
If I had one criticism, it would be that having the top side matte sort of clashes with the trim

Good observation. The top is getting clear gloss on it, so it won't look so odd - not done just yet.
I'd also say the wood grain effect doesn't really do it justice... You know how most tables from that period were slathered in paint? That's the effect I'd go for. It needs to be smoother, I guess.
Maybe toss a couple more coats on?
slap on a few more coats of red then gloss it over. it'll look the part then
I was trying for a more modern effect, with old school styling. The older stuff was all whatever was cheapest - so vinyl, melamine, etc, and paint. I ran one coat of red through it after and wiped it off, then cleared it. The clear fills it in better. I like it.

The other stuff around my appartment still has wood grain effect and is 50's and atomic, so I wanted it to be similar.

Yeah, that looks pretty all-right. You might want to pull out the rotary buffer and buff it to a high shine, though... It'd look fantastic then.
as one of my first welding projects i made a raygun

where do you even find all this crap
arizona is one big scrapyard
My antiques guy actually has an original Buck Rogers tin blaster... thing...
Yours doesn't capture that sort of aesthetic. The Buck Rogers aesthetic was, really, very similar to the Jetsons aesthetic. Rounded, smooth, shiny.
Yours doesn't have that. Yours is jagged, dirty, improvised at best. Reminds me a lot more of Fallout, or similar ventures into postapocalyptica. Not bad, though.

the barrel fins are what reminded me of buck rogers. the 80's version, not the 30's/40's version
also put on barrel fins so it would look like a plasma thing from fallout

also thanks~

I can see that... I had just assumed you meant the early Rogers stuff.

I'm making a mask.

It's a pepakura (papercraft) dragon priest mask from Skyrim. If everything goes successfully, this paper model will be covered in bondo, scultped, and smoothed before a mold will be made of it so I can cast it in resin. This is the first time I've done anything like this, so I'm bound to fuck it up. That's why I'm posting a picture very early on in the process instead of a "finished" product.

Bondo directly on the paper form is a bad idea. My advice is to put one or two layers of mâché on the outside of the form, and then sand it all down and coat it in some sort of waterproof sealant. Last time I did anything like this, I used mod podge. From there, you could buy some quick-set silicone, and put the mask face-down in that to get a form. Use the form to make a silicone master, and make a plaster mould from that. Sort of like those kits they sell for babies' feet... Anyway, once you had a plaster mould, you could coat it with your resin and get almost perfect masks.
Source: I dated a cosplayer once. Once.
I did learn a bit about propwork, though... She wasn't bad with that sort of stuff.
I did fiberglass on the whole thing. Just coat the inside with resin and then let it dry so it stays still, then layer your glass. I used the real deal, not chop-mat when I did my rocketeer helmet. Bondo direct to paper will not stick or work out at all. I had a thread on here where I made a helmet. somewhere...

Thanks for the advice. I had already planned and purchased the materials necessary to coat the inside and outsides of the mask with fiberglass resin to seal it, then reinforce the inside of the mask with fiberglass weave. I should probably have mentioned that in the original post, sorry for any confusion.
I also have a contour gauge coming in the mail so I can make sure it's nice and symmetrical.

I got one at harbor freight for like $4.00. You can also link them together to make a longer gauge.
So I've recently begun the process of homebrewing (beer), and to keep the stuff cool while it ferments I went out and got some 2" thick foamboard insulation, and built essentially a large cooler out of it. Unlike a cooler however, the temperature is controller, digitally in my case, using an old computer fan and temperature sensor controller by and Arduino chip. Was a fun little project, though I was too impatient for glue, and wound up duct taping the thing together.
Around Thanksgiving/Christmas time I'll revamp it and glue the foamboard to some plywood or MDF to make it look a little nicer. I didn't really cut straight, it's a wonder it even sealed in some spots.
what is the smallest bluetooth receiver available? as in is there any microchip that can be picked up by bluetooth like phone? What is it called and what power source would it require?
Is it even possible?

buy a BT modem from an electronics store and wire it up yourself, that's as small as it will get.
of course there's microchips that can be picked up by a phone, how do you think phones have bluetooth to begin with :v:

So I assume there is no way to make a bluetooth receiver as small as a pack of chewing gum for example? I literally just need:
Battery + Receiver that has it's own ID, nothing else. While BT modem will have USB etc..

I'm not sure what you plan to use it for, and i may be just throwing you useless info here. But possibly an arduino chip? http://dslrsystems.com/?page_id=61
I'm not sure what you want this for.. Maybe some proximity thing?
There's these tiny buetooth serial transeivers:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wireless-Serial-4-Pin-Bluetooth-RF-Transceiver-Module-RS232-With-backplane-UK-/190827173677?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item2c6e2f972d
They run on 3.3V, You might get away with 2 x 1.5V AA batteries in series...?
Just had this idea, first of all: I am not cruel to animals, I love mah cat, but I wanted to attach small BT receiver to his collar, so I know if hes at home or fuck knows where, so when I am at PC, I can see on my phone how close he is based on signal strength.

Good idea if he doesn't stray far, but you'll need something else on him incase he goes farther than (33?) feet. (I'm not quite sure on the range of current BT)
