What is a good material to make a desk out of?
I built my desk out of stud work timber with an MDF desktop. Cost about £35, and it's like 3.5 square metres, attached to the wall. [editline]6th October 2014[/editline]
Pallets are free just need a good sanding and some polyurethane and BAM! a nice desk for ~30-50$
Problem I find with pallets is that it's tricky to get a level surface unless all the panels are equal depth. If you've got several identical pallets then it would work. Me and a mate got about 30 of them from an industrial estate, but they were random, slightly broken ones.
Hello everyone! I'm trying to make a custom patina for a copper project, and I'm concerned about the chemicals I wish to combine. I read a guide that involved putting the copper plate in a shallow pool of bleach, and then sprinkling (or dripping) these various chemicals over the plate: Nitric Acid, Citric Acid, Ferric Chloride, Phosphoric Acid, and Vinegar. The guide mentioned that some toxic fumes would be emitted, and that I should do this outside. (which I will do) However, I don't have the time or patience to get all these various chemicals. So now I am wondering if it is safe to use these household chemicals over the bleach instead: PCB Etching Solution (For the Ferric Chloride), Vinegar, Urine (for shits, giggles, and Uric acid), and Fertilizer (I'm pretty sure this has Phosphoric acid, Nitric acid and Ammonia) I will definitely be doing this outside and not standing or breathing near the solution. Does anyone think this is a bad idea? any metalsmithing chemists here?
2 days late I know, but for fuck sake do NOT mix bleach and anything with Ammonia. That shit creates the worst fumes and it will fuck you up. As said, pissing on it is probably the cheapest and easiest solution!

It's not like it's some sentient murder gas that follows you around.
Breaking news, I'm making a $10 racing seat from a reception chair, more at 11. Also, I got surrounded by tummy rubbing 'junkyard' people wearing overalls and no shirts when I went to inquire about the cost of a junk car seat. I was initially told "no....no...we dun have nun runnin' " after I asked "I'm looking for a cheap car seat, what's the cheapest that you've got?" then I got boxed in by other junk yard peoples trucks and had to wait for fifteen minutes for them to move their truck because for some reason asking them if they could move their truck was to much for them to comprehend. I've sworn off junkyard folk. Well after I had the bad junkyard experience I just went and bought a reception chair (there's another I'm buying tomorrow, identical as well, so I can make a second) and took it home and did some quick and dirty mods to it, and all said and done it's super comfortable, very car like in feel, and was only $4. So once I had the seat set up I had a go at setting up the wheel/screen on a temp bench to see about placement for comfort and usability. Got all that hammered out and remodeled my concept for the cheap racing seat off the new chair design. Simple adjustable pedals as well, with a foot rest. Should be a fun bonding experience and I bet he likes using a sawzall. Also this saturday I'm taking my 15 year old nephew to an 19th century community blacksmithing workshop. We're going to start learning how to do blacksmithing, it should be wicked fun, he'll love it because he's just now getting into LoTR and GoT,
Fight me bro i've got a compressor and I [del]ain't[/del] (am kind of) afraid to use it
Refrigeration compressors don't make very good air compressors, just an FYI.
It was a slow day at work, and we were all bored. So I made this out of trash lying around the warehouse. [t]http://s10.postimg.org/m3ysfkauw/IMG_3211.jpg[/t]
Is that one of those giant straws filled with candy powder?
Refrigeration compressors don't make very good air compressors, just an FYI.
Yeah, I know. It's better than nothing, though, and only cost me £8 as opposed to the hundreds a decent compressor would cost.

Bought a beat up vintage 3D MagLite at goodwill for .99 cents for my girlfriend. Didn't have batteries or a bulb. I brought it home and put the batteries and bulb in and it still didn't work. So I took it apart, took the switch assembly out (kind of difficult since the instructions floating around on how to do it only refer to modern models that come apart completely different) and took apart the whole button assembly and cleaned off the corrosion off the connection points and springs and it's working perfectly now. Beat up, but it's got some character. My girlfriend was wanting to buy one last week but she was discouraged when she saw they were $30. She was tired of not having good durable flashlights. Not the brightest things, but with an LED upgrade they can be very nice.
Also, for those interested. Here's an update on my $10 driving seat. Adjustable pedals allow my 5'3" nephew to use it comfortably all the way up to my 6'3" frame. Was a blast to use. Now I want to make a cheap fighter cockpit with a HOTAS. It's a shit paintjob, but it's a disposable racing cockpit.
I like that a whole lot. I've been meaning to make something like this for awhile because my uncle and I are also interested in doing some virtual racing. I just need more space and time, mostly more space. [editline]edit[/editline] Though I've always wanted to make something like this because the E30 is one of my all time favorite cars.
When doing some research I saw some pretty mean looking E30 cockpits, I love the working speedometers and tachs. I say go for it, make something cheap to start with to see how it feels. In an ideal world I'd like to design a steel cockpit for use with both wheels, flight controls and a keyboard/mouse that I could use with Rift in the future. But I've got a long list of projects before that.
That one has a cup holder, we need a cup holder Ajacks
Now I want to make a cheap fighter cockpit with a HOTAS.
My local museum has a Lightning cockpit with flight simulator. It's really fun
So while taking a rest from that TV I purchased a Heathkit AR-2 AM/Shortwave radio off a hobo in Vancouver for $15 plus a bucket of ice cream. Cosmetically it was really dirty but electrically it's flawless. Seriously. I would expect a 60 year old radio to suffer from something but apparently not. Even without an antenna it can pull in a station through the mountains so after a good cleaning and inspection it was put into service in the spare bedroom.
"I would like Fifteen US dollars and a purple rubber ducky, and a half box of Chicken In A Biskit crackers or no deal!" Those internals look beautiful.
What was a hobo doing with a radio from the 50s? Say you have an item, a valuable item that you want to keep and avoid any kind of damage over years (dust, wearing out, sun affecting etc..) whats the best way to store it? Some plastic/glass container or what?

Unless it's a severed heart from one of your victims, I really doubt it's going to deteriorate too quickly just sitting on a shelf. What is the thing, anyway?

So he is paranoid now when somebody is in his room. So I am making suggestions for him. Yeah at first I thought of: some kind of UV coated glass or something with vacuum inside, would that work?
