Most bottles of cleaning stuff etc that you can find in stores have like no description at all of what's inside the bottle.
If you need to find "toxic" components of a product and like to take the risk of contamination and poor Quality Control, Googling "*product name* MSDS"might be helpful if the product has an American equivalent. There are some things they don't have to put on there, like Latex if the product isn't desinged to come in contact with human skin (such as a tire repair kit). This would probably work better if you knew the Netherlands Equivalent of the MSDS was.

Ordered a new fuel filter and fuel lines for my string trimmer. Disassembled it and rebuilt the carb and muffler. Got sick feeling off old gas fumes though, where's Timebomb when you need him.
I've been sorting out our old laser cutter at work. It's a versal laser VL300 if anyone is interested. I had to make 'LOAD' settings [which includes what power to cut at, the PPI, the engrave and score power/intensity] for all the materials we use in the projects. All of these are straight out from the laser cutter - no sanding or cleaning. I wanted to show the staff and students what the outcome will look like. The only one which has been finished is the 'INLAY' as I had to glue the 0.6mm veneer into the walnut. Sorry for the yellow tinge in all the pictures, it's the cheapo school lights. :v: Yes I know I spelt brown walnut wrong, it's meant to be black walnut, and no I'm not going to cut it out again. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/3n7LemA.jpg[/thumb] The deep engrave setting on the acrylic allows the 0.9mm polypropylene to fit into the slot for any project which may need it. Very nice. Reminds me, Ajacks, how's your CNC thing going? Did you ever get anywhere with that?
I wish i had a laser cutter :C
Did a little more silver refining this Sunday. Bit of a bigger batch too (didn't weigh it, but I estimate about 30-40+ contacts in this batch) Tried using muriatic acid to eat away the copper and leave the silver behind, because research showed that HCl doesn't affect silver. As it turns out, it doesn't affect copper much, either, other than making it REALLY shiny. :v: So in the end I said "fukkit" and just dumped the lot into nitric acid. Evil fumes.
Very nice. Reminds me, Ajacks, how's your CNC thing going? I've made about $1,700 from reselling over the month and a half, so after Christmas that puts me almost to my 10k goal for my machine. It's going, it's just currently just getting the funds in order. [editline]12th January 2015[/editline]
I wish i had a laser cutter :C
I want a laser so damn bad, I'll get one after my CNC router and possibly plasma. Omni CNC has good deals on lasers.
10k is cheap. We paid 25k for our laser, and it only has a 5 foot surface table. I have to get that thing out of storage eventually, but there's nothing to do with it right now. This is what we bought it to make: It is a wood reproduction of Cannery Row, as depicted in "Cannery Row" -Steinbeck. These houses were built on a beach in Monterey, Ca by my aunt, and we built the walnut cabinetry, and column work for all 10 houses. Luckily my stepmom took some pictures of it for her website so it can still be seen. None of the houses sold and the whole development went to auction unfortunately. They were priced to sell at $1,250,000 a piece, and when I say on the beach, I mean if you walk outside, you can fall in the ocean. The design on the cabinets are individual inlays of wood, and the whole piece was drawn in CAD, then individually printed each piece out of various veneers with the laser. The houses were all designed in a kind of round shape so you'd walk through the kitchen and there was more hallway, and bedrooms, and a living room smack in the center that was octagon shaped. These were the foyers: those columns I still have the forms for.
Holy fuck thumb that image.
I'd be looking at a smaller laser than that, something in the 36" wide bed range. [t]http://image.made-in-china.com/43f34j00CZuTstkgOarK/Omni-CNC-Laser-Cutting-Machine-Laser-Engraving-Machine.jpg[/t] They run about 6-7k. My CNC router is going to be an Omni 1325, with vacuum table. That's what I'm getting in the coming months.
I made an antenna for my SDR (software defined radio). [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/88ABb08.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/lonNBsB.jpg[/thumb] It was a huge pain to solder that stainless steel, I had to heavily scratch it. also I covered it in hot glue to kind of hold everything in place. and the final result, the left is the homemade antenna and the right is the stock antenna that came with the $20~ dongle. with the same exact settings on SDR#. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/RgOMa5i.png[/thumb] Basically I bought some 1$ pizza pans from a dollar store, mounted them on a plank of wood. then took a coax and stripped it. the copper core is only touching the top pan, and the shielding/mesh is touching the bottom pan. btw aluminum is impossible to solder, so when I have time I'm going to rip everything off, take a strip of metal and screw in that bottom part, then resolder the top part. hopefully that will work better. This hobby is pretty fun, and that homemade antenna only cost me like 15$. and 5 of that was a cheap soldering iron. which broke because I think it left it on too long and it melted the actual tip of the iron, rendering it useless. I'll probably return it, get another one.
I would have guessed this thread would have been deleted?
It looks like the deletion is just for threads over 100 pages, everything else got tossed into general discussion. It's a shame, because it sort of homogenized our little community. I hate when Garry decides to go insane.
I would have guessed this thread would have been deleted?
I think we might need a 'mega thread for the maker, DIY, thrifting stuff because I think we might lose the various threads we had in the sea of everything else. What do you guys think?
I think we might need a 'mega thread for the maker, DIY, thrifting stuff because I think we might lose the various threads we had in the sea of everything else. What do you guys think?
Might as well, anything else would get lost. and even that thread will be buried and you'll have to search for it everyday to find it.
I'd be careful about that, since the G-man hates megathreads, but since the DIY/design/thrifting threads were essentially made up of the same people, making a more general thread makes sense.
I'd be careful about that, since the G-man hates megathreads, but since the DIY/design/thrifting threads were essentially made up of the same people, making a more general thread makes sense.
I doubt we'd be reaching page limits any time soon. What should the unified thread cover? I just hate cluttering up the making stuff with all the buying and selling stuff.
Well, what are the threads we frequented? I know I visited this one, the thrift thread, and my architecture thread which is gone now. Odd stuff too, I think? What if we made a "Maker Mates Community Megathread?"
sniop
Well, what are the threads we frequented? I know I visited this one, the thrift thread, and my architecture thread which is gone now.
How about just Facepunch Makers. Post your projects, finds, things you like, a place to talk about everything involved with making, repairing, creating, and design. I'll try and throw together an OP this evening.

Doesn't quite incorporate my architecture thread in any sensical way, but we make do with whatever the lunatic running this forum does.
I'd just keep posting in your architecture thread, it's still there just not been posted in for a few hours.
I'm just really worried it's going to get lost, since there's so much activity in GD right now. Then again, I guess it's a good chance to get more posters.
If someone is handy with greasemonkey, it would be nice to have a faux subforum that groups maker mate related stuff..
"The DIY, Thrifting, Object Appreciation Thread! ~Retro Fans Central" would be a magnificent title. The Op should include an explanation that the thread is for various DIY projects, items found in thrift stores, or any sort of item that someone would want to share with Facepunch because of an interesting backstory or significance. Complete with the slew of pictures from the previous threads of fans to complete the pun in the title. As for dealing with Anti-mega thread mods, I would imagine the case of "We were all posting in the same threads anyway, and it's less threads for you to moderate" would work well. Someone would need to get a mod to close the old threads though, to ensure migration.

Yes I see where you're coming from. I can admit I was being absurdly blunt and insensitive in that post. In my defense I'm tired and am very much a person who like to start fresh whenever possible. But I should be more listening to the feelings of other people, especially during times of turmoil like a massive forum switcheroo.

The CED player broke AGAIN. The power button was always weird but today it simply stopped working. Not a fun task given how it's NOT a common part. Two switches in one. Eventually I sourced a normal two pole on/off pushbutton switch. It wasn't a perfect fit so I had to fabricate a bracket to hold it in place and then bolt into the original fasteners.
