Could this be your culprit? It's the Newfoundland ferry. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] I know it has white on the top but perhaps that was harder to see than the black bottom due to lighting conditions or whatever.
i went to take a boat ride onse but the boat wasnt at the docks so i dint get a boat ride

[editline]30th July 2012[/editline] I know it has white on the top but perhaps that was harder to see than the black bottom due to lighting conditions or whatever.
I don't think so. The white would have stood out very clearly against the islands in the background, although if you painted the whole thing black it could almost make sense. However, I've been on that boat before I think and from what I remember it wasn't going as fast as the thing last night.
I can't find anything on marinetracker that fits the description. I'm guessing it could've been a cargo ship or an oil tanker because the bridge was in the way back. Never seen a tanker with a completely blacked out bridge though. Those are usually white. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] This is what a Canadian submarine looks like: Perhaps, if the sub was coming or going away from you, it would appear as if the conning tower was near the back of the ship.
I just measured it on Google Maps, it was about 4.7km away, and I estimated it was travelling AROUND 56km/h using certain landmarks when I seen it, which seems very fast, so maybe 46km/h - 56 km/h. Here's a very beautiful recreation of what I probably would have seen if I had binoculars on that fateful night: The shaded stuff over the vessel is to simulate my shitty vision at that range without glasses. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] Okay my eyes aren't that bad, but the outline is what I meant to give an idea about.
The fact that you remember that much as it is I find rather impressive :v:
British battleships! HMS Dreadbought, first modern warship. All metal construction, with rotating breach-loading heavy gun batteries. HMS Hood, a heavy cruiser that was Britain's flagship in WWII until it was sunk in 1941 by the Bismarck. 3 crew survived out of 1,325 My personal favourite, King George V. First in a series of King George V class battleships. 3 gun turrets, 2 of which had an experimental 4 barrel configuration. The combined fire of KGV and HMS Dorsetshire sunk Bismarck. Speaking of unusual turret configurations, HMS Rodney had 3 gun batteries positioned in front of the bridge, making the ship look like a large oil tanker from a distance. For this reason the crew and other naval personnel dubbed HMS Rodney "Rodnoil".

[editline]30th July 2012[/editline] Its the SS Great Eastern by the way for those that didn't know
Battleships like this are my favorite, they don't make em this awesome anymore.
With the advent of long range missiles, large weight-centric battleships are too costly and large to be of any use. They were designed to saturate the enemy with shells, and to take hits and keep on firing. USS Iowa, used in WWII, was able to last up to the Vietnam war due to various additions and reductions made in terms of weaponry and equipment. It's the same as all the other romantic military practices that became outdated. Cavalry, zeppelins, close-range dogfighting, and now battleships.
An Iowa class battleship served in the Gulf War, too. I think it was the Wisconsin. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] The Zumwalt class that were building will be the closest thing to a battleship. It's going to have two, single gun turrets on the bow, along with a suite of long range missiles. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] Theres a picture of it on this page.

I can't imagine the kind of speed they got out of that thing while under full steam, probably a roaring 5 knots or something :v:
Look at all those tiny sinkable boats, what we really need is an unsinkable ship!

How about the biggest cruise ship in the world: It's so big it's got an open air mall in the middle:

I just took my boat out for a ride for the first time in 4 years. It's one of these: It's an Optimist Racer. I won two Silver medals in the Northeastern regattas in one of those. I'll post pictures of mine some other time. But for now, have this masterpiece: That's a 470 Racer. Expensive as fuck because they're trapeze equipped (the harness holding the guy hanging over the side) and made mostly from composites and carbon fiber. I've only sailed that type once and I was scared shitless. With Olympic sails like those, and some nice winds, you can easily get up to about 20-30 knots.
That looks both fun and terrifying at the same time. It's amazing that you can get a boat that fast with just a sail. How would someone starting out get into sailing?
I adore old ocean liners. Its too bad we didnt save more of them.
I visited the port of RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach not long ago. I hear that at Halloween they throw cool parties on board. Of course, I didn't even go aboard. I went to B-427, the Soviet Foxtrot class submarine that's berthed right next to it. You can barely see it on the right of the photograph.
the fuck is that dome i don't remember that being there when i went there maybe i just remember it badly :<

The one here offers it but from what I've heard it could be very expensive.

I don't want to sound cliché here, but you may become discouraged in the beginning by low wind conditions. The best boats for low wind learning are 420's, which is one step down from the boat in the video. The 470 is an Olympic class boat made to get up to 35 knots. People for some reason see the thunderstorm races and immediately jump into a 470. That is the complete wrong route. I assume you aren't less than 5 foot 2 inches, or less than 120 pounds, so Optimist Racers may be out of your reach. The only reason I am still sailing an Opti at 16 years old, is because I'm 5'2" and 105Lbs.
Saw this awesome picture of USS New Jersey, an Iowa class battleship.

Though that does look really fun. I would really like to learn how to solo a ocean-going sailboat though. Though logic tells me the best place to start would be with a smaller, more nimble boat, rather than one of those 30+ foot yachts. [editline]1st August 2012[/editline] I happen to live about 50 yards away from a large lake. So maybe I'll look into it. [editline]1st August 2012[/editline] And, if you've gotten silver twice and you're only 16, you must be fairly good. You going to try to get to the Olympics in Rio?

Sadly, boats do not have autopilot.
