Yeah they do. They just went off course to get closer to the island.
I visited the port of RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach not long ago. I hear that at Halloween they throw cool parties on board.

Of course, I didn't even go aboard. I went to B-427, the Soviet Foxtrot class submarine that's berthed right next to it. You can barely see it on the right of the photograph.
I got the chance to go on both the sub and the Queen Mary back around mid-October 2009. They were halfway through setting up the halloween event though so half the ship was cordoned off and there was a massive heatwave so I didn't stay on for long. Fuck if I know what happened in that section.
Now have a battleship with half a flight-deck:

The best way to start sailing is probably to find a local yacht or boating club, or find some group lesson providers. I don't want to sound cliché here, but you may become discouraged in the beginning by low wind conditions. The best boats for low wind learning are 420's, which is one step down from the boat in the video. The 470 is an Olympic class boat made to get up to 35 knots. People for some reason see the thunderstorm races and immediately jump into a 470. That is the complete wrong route.
I assume you aren't less than 5 foot 2 inches, or less than 120 pounds, so Optimist Racers may be out of your reach. The only reason I am still sailing an Opti at 16 years old, is because I'm 5'2" and 105Lbs.
Cool, I've always wanted to go sailing myself. But I have a few things to take care of before I march right into the local club.
I don't own one myself, but a friend of mine is editor, chief and founder of Norway's biggest boat magazine. I have another friend who makes wooden boats, mostly sailboats and canoes. To top that off, my friend who owns the magazine is expanding and now wants to hire me to make product videos for boats where I'll earn a good $5000 per video. I may be more into aviation, but I have quite a relation to boats.

Hot damn that's hot.
I wonder how thick are the wood needed for a good small 1 man rowboat/dinghy/sailboat.
My dad's house ceiling is made of some high quality timber and he is changing most of it so if he haven't I might have some wood to play around with. I'm not very good with woodwork but this seems like a really cool project to take on. Of course I don't plan to take it to the water but a boat is a boat.
I'm around 5' 3" - 5' 4" at 20. I don't know If I would do much racing. Though that does look really fun. I would really like to learn how to solo a ocean-going sailboat though. Though logic tells me the best place to start would be with a smaller, more nimble boat, rather than one of those 30+ foot yachts.

I happen to live about 50 yards away from a large lake. So maybe I'll look into it.

And, if you've gotten silver twice and you're only 16, you must be fairly good. You going to try to get to the Olympics in Rio?
If you want to do racing in a yacht, you have to learn on a yacht. So instead of learning on a 10 foot boat to race on a 75 yacht, find a yacht school.
Unfortunately, I'm out growing my Opti, and there is no Olympic Optimist class. So I may have to upgrade to a Laser Radial.
