• Why hasn't "under god" been removed from the American pledge?
Why is everything considered offensive today? The pledge has the word God in it. Is it forcing anyone to believe in God? Does it make life harder for people who don't believe in God? No, not really. And if this is offensive, what about Christmas? Ya know, the holiday that is centered around what Christians believe to be the birth of Jesus Christ? Hell, the schools give kids a nice long break for this holiday. In other words, they don't let kids come to school. Is that offensive, too? Maybe we should change the name to Ten-Year-Olds-Crying-Because-They-Didn't-Get-Modern Warfare 2-mas so it doesn't have the word 'Christ' in it.
Also, that's very stereotypical (the part with kids crying) :v:
Who really cares if a single word is left in the pledge? If something like this happens, soon trees will be banned on Christmas.
Because its "infringing" on Tl2_goose' rights! Because, "In God We Trust" is on our dollar, religion runs our government! Being an American citizen who votes and pays taxes, I don't see in the least bit how my rights are being infringed on, even if I didn't believe in God. I can still say fuck, I can still go convert to any religion I want, any day of the week I want, and I can still own a damn gun. (With a license of course.) No. The pledge doesn't "infringe" on your rights, your freedom of speech protects you. You're free to not say the pledge, and cross "In God We Trust" off of your dollar if you want too, hell. It's not like . Christmas trees banned on Christmas? Also no. Let me break down what will happen instead. The Muslims, and Atheists will get butt hurt that "Christ" is in Christmas, and school is being let out for 2 weeks so their kids are at home, and it will be permanently named "CHRISmas" so they can sleep at night. Then they will realize that people are celebrating Santa Claus, and get it changed to Xmas. See why this argument is kind of stupid? You can celebrate Christmas without believing in Jesus Christ, just like you can say the pledge without saying "under god," just like you can spend a dollar without trusting in god, nothings holding anyone back, and no religious views are being pushed onto anyone. What are we gonna argue about next? Oh I know! I drove behind a car on the way to work and say a Jesus Is Love bumper sticker! That guy is totally infringing on my rights! I'm done, rate me boxes, but try to see my point. [editline]03:23PM[/editline]
Everything suddenly became offensive in the 21st century.
Agreed. We can show decapitated heads on some horror movie, make black guy jokes on SNL and Mad TV. But GOD is something we have to flip shit about.
Why is everyone so mad at conservatives?

(No stars or angels or anything, just lights) However, a rabbi got upset and forced the down to either take down the lights, or put up a giant menorah.

But don't, understand that people will do whatever they can to moan and cry about something that really doesn't affect them at all. *COUGH* half the people in this thread *COUGH*
The fact that I like it or not is not the issue. The issue is that it infringes on separation of church and state.
How the fuck does it not separate church and state? No money or anything is going to a church because of the fucking pledge, it's just something we say. You're right, your not crying, your just a dumbass.
All you people who are arguing either "wahhhhh the religion people want me to say something religious" or "waaaaaaah the athiests/other religous people want to keep me from saying religous things" need to realize that the only rational kind of government would be one that has, as its highest purpose, the protection of the rights of the individual. Your problem arises from the fact that governments usually try to treat people like conglomerate groups of minds, the problem is that is not the case, populations are populations of individuals, all with their own thoughts and values, as such it is almost impossible to represent ALL of these people in public institutions. By now you should have realized that the best solution to such a problem is to get rid of public institutions, and privatize them, such that the private owner of such a place would be free to do with it as they wish. As long as you don't seek to infringe on the rights of others, you are free to do as you please both the religious people and non religious people need to realize that and stop concerning themselves with other people.
I hate the way GOD controlls laws too..... like gay marriage
That's the pledge, not the Constitution.
And we ARE talking about the pledge.
I don't know what kind of awesome school you went to but in my elementary, middle, and high schools you got in trouble for not standing up.
In my school you don't have to say the pledge, but you still have to stand up. And they did remove the under god part from the texas pledge.
It should be changed to "under whatever the hell I want to believe in", that way people won't bitch.
Why do you honestly care so much it's not like you read the constitution in everyday life.
you are obviously not american, or fucking retarded
I'm the one cross on the OP's ratings. Why? I'm an Athiest! Because it doesn't fucking matter. The government is not forcing us to believe in one faith over others, plus, all the founders were Christians, cut them some slack. We still have the freedom to believe whatever we like, saying God once in the Pledge is not killing anyone. What IS killing everyone is Christians asking for prayer time during school, expecting special treatment for their kids. This is where separation of Church and State becomes dicey. And, by the principles this nation was founded on, if Christians want prayer time during school, then Muslims will need their 3-4 prayer times (and be able to bring in their rugs), and Jews will need to be able to bring in their symbols and pray, Buddhists will need ample time to do their own thing...and fuck that, it throws school schedules way out of whack.
It should be changed to "under whatever the hell I want to believe in", that way people won't bitch.
I always say, "Under Canada" :v:
What, just rate me dumb because you guys don't think that having a figure to look up to is a good thing for a country? The ideal of a god isn't the best, because it is a lie; but the ideal of enforcing morals with a powerful figure is good. I don't believe in god; but most of the people on facepunch say they're athiest, but i tend to believe they're more anti-christ then athiest. You don't say to a christian how unreal god is and how your soul wount be saved, you just nod and say "yea, i understand". It's their choice to believe in that, even if it's a stupid choice, you should respect it.
if you're gonna make a stupid choice i'm gonna tell you you're wrong and that ultimately you're stupid, end of discussion 3 pages late :allears:
It's always been that way, it's part of our history. Stop being so overly sensitive and bitchy.

I just don't like Religion and Government/Politics mixed. Like that gay marriage shit, fuck those Christian fucktards, they can get the fuck out, because this is the land of the god-damned-free.
if a little religion unites my country, i'm okay with that. op sounds like a whiny lobbyist; pissing and moaning over stupid simple things that don't influence daily life. the great thing about america is that you don't have to say the pledge.
-snip-, nevermind I remembered incorrectly
I don't know. It's not that big a deal, honestly. They are not addressing any god in particular. It basically means "we fear God." But if it offends you, don't worry: it will probably be out within ten years. Also, the U.S. was founded on Christianity. The first non-genocidal individuals came here in hopes of establishing a Christian community to escape the oppressiveness of the Catholic Church and the pope. And gay marriage is illegal because the majority of Americans want it illegal, at least for now. Perhaps this is religious influence, but it seems like many atheists are antitheists who let their hatred of religion influence how they think. Understand that I don't believe that being an atheist makes you a bad person. But just because the majority disagrees with you, doesn't mean that you should attack their beliefs. The U.S. is a democracy, and if the majority wants the God references removed, then they shall be removed. And we will no longer be under God. But, as of right now, we are under God. So stop whining, ffs. Appreciate the democracy. It's not fucking mind control. Things have gone all right this way so far, so why change?
I always say, "Under Canada" :v:
That works, too. :canada:
It's a Country that was more or less built on Christianity, I guess they left a few things to pay homage to what made the country possible. But hey, if you don't like it, pack up and move out of here, you won't be missed by many.
Because in the Supreme Court case that was concerned with removing the phrase from the pledge, the Supreme Court decided that the parent suing on the child's behalf did not have legal right to do so. The Supreme Court decided that the mother retained sole legal custody of the child who had to say the pledge, rather than the atheist father who was suing. So the Supreme Court decided to refuse to deal with the issue at hand, instead referring it to future generations. A brief of the case can be found here: http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/02-1624.ZS.html Regardless of the political will to remove the statement, there has not yet been a case where the court is inextricably bound to do so.
It's blatantly unconstitutional as it infringes on separation of church and state, and it was only added during the Cold War by some priest because back then if you were an atheist you were considered a Russian red commie who wanted to burn the capitalist pigs. Goddammit, america. Same goes for the motto "In God We Trust" now that I think about.
In my school you don't have to say the pledge, but you still have to stand up. And they did remove the under god part from the texas pledge.
That's ironic!
Every time we say the pledge in class, my incredibly butthurt, right wing, Christian, southern teacher reprimands me.
Woah, I didn't even come close to thinking of that. That actually makes loads of sense :golfclap:
Yeah, they may be deluded people but they would still be upset and it's generally a good idea for governments that want to retain support not to upset a large majority of their people.

Who cares if it's in there or not. I mean seriously....how much do you say it? I know by the time I hit 6th Grade I never said it in school again. Now i'm out of school..guess what? Don't say it.
In school they force you too say it every morning.
Hahaha no, they give you the choice to say the pledge.
