Because it isn't a big deal. Coming from an Atheist: Get over it.
Deal with it. :c00lbert:
I know. Last year, my town decorated a giant tree in front of the town hall with lights. (No stars or angels or anything, just lights) However, a rabbi got upset and forced the down to either take down the lights, or put up a giant menorah.
The town should have said the tree was pagan symbolism just to watch the christians squirm.
This country was made with no specific religion, not no religion. [editline]10:05AM[/editline] What I'm referring to is how each country back then had set religions. Like a lot of countries followed their ruler's religion so you'd have Catholic or what not. America said there was no specific religion, so that people didn't get prosecuted for having a different belief.
Because our earliest presidents believed in God, and they put him in the constitution because they believed. Also in my high school, we never had to say the Pledge of Allegiance. It's not like they put a gun to our heads and forced us to say it, people can choose to do it or not. It's America remember, freedom to have or not have religion.
Ugh, only read the OP, I consider myself agnostic but it doesn't bother me that the pledge involves "god" and we have the phrase, "In God We Trust." That's only because this country was founded on the grounds of religion. Yes, it's involved a lot more, and at least it evolved on top of protestant beliefs rather than catholic, or we'd be just as communist as Red Russia back in the day. But seriously, if you can't see the grounds on which our country was created, then you'd have to say birds are mammals.
I'm getting so sick of this separation of church and state bullshit it's not even funny. The founding fathers wanted to keep the church from becoming a government force, and to keep the government from having authority over government. They did NOT say Christianity could not be mentioned or respected in the US government. If this was the case, why was a reading of the 35th psalm part of the first continental congress, why did the proceedings at George Washington's inauguration head to St.Paul's Chapel afterwards, why is the bible hold 34% of all citations by our founding father and their writings? Know your fucking US history people, jesus.
In school they force you too say it every morning.
No they do not.
I hate the way GOD controlls laws too..... like gay marriage
Yeah, it's pretty annoying whenever he takes his seat in the senate. I swear, the moment you disagree with him, he just smites you on the spot. It's ridiculous trying to get anything changed with him there.
I don't know what kind of awesome school you went to but in my elementary, middle, and high schools you got in trouble for not standing up.
you are communist.
I don't know. It's not that big a deal, honestly. They are not addressing any god in particular. It basically means "we fear God." But if it offends you, don't worry: it will probably be out within ten years. Also, the U.S. was founded on Christianity. The first non-genocidal individuals came here in hopes of establishing a Christian community to escape the oppressiveness of the Catholic Church and the pope. And gay marriage is illegal because the majority of Americans want it illegal, at least for now. Perhaps this is religious influence, but it seems like many atheists are antitheists who let their hatred of religion influence how they think. Understand that I don't believe that being an atheist makes you a bad person. But just because the majority disagrees with you, doesn't mean that you should attack their beliefs. The U.S. is a democracy, and if the majority wants the God references removed, then they shall be removed. And we will no longer be under God. But, as of right now, we are under God. So stop whining, ffs. Appreciate the democracy. It's not fucking mind control. Things have gone all right this way so far, so why change?
Goddammit read the thread, the US was not founded on Christianity. What you're talking about are the Puritan settlers in the British Colonies, the Founding Fathers created the document of the United States government without Christianity in mind, and it was even explicitly stated in the Treaty of Tripoli. And I'm pretty sure they're addressing the Christian god, since when it was signed Eisenhower said "From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our Nation and our people to the Almighty."
It's always been that way, it's part of our history. Stop being so overly sensitive and bitchy.
No, it hasn't "always been that way". Before, it was a different pledge. Then when the Cold War started everyone thought atheists were Commies so they added in Under God in 1954.
Because it isn't a big deal. Coming from an Atheist: Get over it.
Sure, it's not a big deal, but I'm pretty sure it's all about how comfortable you are with saying it. I'm pretty sure that at least most Atheists, like me, are uncomfortable talking or singing about god.
If Dwight D. Fucking Eisenhower wants "under God" in the mother fucking pledge, it will be in the mother fucking pledge. I'm pretty sure there are multiple states which do not say the pledge because of that. So if it really pisses you off that much, move there or out of the country.
He didn't, he was just appeasing the religious right.
I don't know. It's not that big a deal, honestly. They are not addressing any god in particular.
That's not the matter... The matter is the people who want it changed (mostly Atheists) do not believe in god. It has nothing to do with which god, it's just god himself.
Why do you honestly care so much it's not like you read the constitution in everyday life.
Why so apathetic.
heLLO i am atheist and my waYS ARE RIGHT BECAUSE I SAY SO
Because if you were tolerant, you wouldn't give a flying fuck about saying it.
Ever since I was in 1st grade I've always questioned the requirement that all students have to recite the pledge of alliegance (unless they came in with a signed note from their parents stating they didn't have to). It just seems weird enough that patriotism is kind of being forced on the youth without really giving a reason why they should love our country so much. And it makes it worse that they put "god" in it. Not everyone's parents were forcing the concept of "god" at that age. Not that I even think it's a huge deal, because it obviously didn't influence me, but the whole thing just seems kind of stupid. They've got all these kids standing and putting their hands over their hearts so they can pledge alliegance to a flag that represents something they hardly know anything about.
Nobody forces you, you have the right to remain seated. In before every republican in existence is blamed.
No you don't. At my school the teachers are idiots and if you sit down they make a big deal about how soliders lost lives and they make you write a 10 page essay on why you should say it. [editline]05:49PM[/editline]
Goddammit read the thread, the US was not founded on Christianity. And this is why the US is still a developing country.
In school they force you too say it every morning.
Yeah. My freshman year of highschool I got called to the office and almost got suspended because I refused to say the pledge. It's really a shame when we've lost our freedom of expression.
when was the last time you were forced to say it? does it burn you everytime you touch a coin that says that in your pocket? ignore it just like Christians ignore most athiests cus the majority of the world believes in GOD no matter if you are Muslim or Catholic its the same GOD gotta think that you are just a minority wanting to remove something that has been around for what 150+ years? it might be taken out but it will just cause crazy Christians to revolt and shit. just live with it. not hurting anybody. if you dont agree with it then you dont agree! simple
No you don't. At my school the teachers are idiots and if you sit down they make a big deal about how soliders lost lives and they make you write a 10 page essay on why you should say it.
Yeah, apparently because all those people died for my freedom I have to say "Under God".
Because if you were tolerant, you wouldn't give a flying fuck about saying it.
basically that so many things about freedom lets just say America isnt really free and gives you freedom of expression think about it... now if you dont like it then move until we actually change cus everyone moves out of the country making the USA poor.
Yeah. My freshman year of highschool I got called to the office and almost got suspended because I refused to say the pledge. It's really a shame when we've lost our freedom of expression.
In our school, no one gives a shit if you don't say the pledge, they just give a shit if you stand up. Even then, it's not that badly forced. Yet again, I'm in Mass, so it's always really lenient. Speaking of anthems and shit, do you Brits have to say shit for anthems or something?
gotta think that you are just a minority wanting to remove something that has been around for what 150+ years?
Haha, no. Try 50.
Honestly, just don't say it. If you REALLY feel that angered about it. Like what has God ever done to you anyways? And I never said Religion, God Himself, what has He done to you that is SO bad you refuse to even mention his name? This question does not include an argument stating that The crusades, Murders in the name of God, or anything done wrong in the name of God is ok. I personally believe that if you use God as the way out, you are not a follower of Jesus or God. If you use God as a reason to do what you want, then you are looking for an easy way out with gullible people. Or just extremely brain washed that it's ok to hurt people and things for God.
Fucking nationalists in this thread, it's disgusting.
