Why hasn't "under god" been removed from the American pledge?
It's blatantly unconstitutional as it infringes on separation of church and state, and it was only added during the Cold War by some priest because back then if you were an atheist you were considered a Russian red commie who wanted to burn the capitalist pigs.
Goddammit, america.
Same goes for the motto "In God We Trust" now that I think about.
Fff-
It doesn't infringe separation of church and state.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
An "establishment of religion" refers to the government creating an official religion, and was placed into the Constitution because the founding fathers of America didn't want to see another English Church, the official government-sanctioned Church in England. Nor are the government prohibiting the free exercise of religion.
People need to re-read the United States Constitution before spewing political phrases like "Separation of church and state" around, because nowhere in the Constitution does it state that there is a clear and distinct separation of the Church and the State.
On this matter, I don't really give a fuck, I used to be catholic, but now I consider myself agnostic.

Not many have read the actual full constitution. I haven't. I have read and memorized most of the amendments though. I feel stupid now that i realized i'm American and never read our own constitution.
I don't think we need to take this is as an "OMG ANTI GOD WE SMART WE KNOW EVERYTHING". I am a Christen and I still think it should be removed, to signify the other beliefs or dis-beliefs. But then again, (south park quote ftw) "It's a part of history"
The founders of the united states were in christian in one way or form. Plus back then religion was straight up serious.
Deist= not chirstian.
Seriously guys? There are so many issues in the nation and the world and you're worried about two fucking words?
If you don't want to say "under God", they don't say it. It's a crazy idea, but I think it just might work.
BTW the pledge does not infringe on the Constitution. The pledge is not a law, nor was it created by Congress.
I still find it utterly incredible, as a British citizen, that American children have to pledge allegiance every day to their nation, flag and god. I know that they can refuse to if they want, but most still do it. When I was first told about it I thought the person telling me was trolling. In America patriotism is serious business apparently ...

the point is, when you have millions of kids saying "under god" in their elementary schools - you're brainwashing them into something that can be potentially dangerous to everyone
this justification of religion in our most sacred pledge is disgusting. religion should NOT be in anything that represents our country, or anything on public property. religion is an excuse for bigotry, racism, violence and ignorance and it should be looked down upon and abolished.

You're just as bigoted and ignorant as religion is (at least by your standards). There are numerous religions that don't promote or advocate any of those qualities that you claim (Buddhism, Taoism, etc).
At that, you might as well remove "With Liberty and Justice for all."
People aren't really following those anymore.
I don't know what school you other Americans go to, but here in Michigan, we don't say the pledge anymore in school every morning. At least not in high school.
Also, if you want the under god taken out, then do what any other person who wants something changed does, send a letter to your representative. It's how anything ever gets done around here and posting here on Facepunch will get you no where. The reason 'under god' is still there is because the fact that most people either like it or don't care that it's there. The other half of people who don't want it there are just probably too lazy to do anything about it, like you posting here on Facepunch.

my standards of bigotry are: denying two people who love eachother the chance of marriage because of your blind devotion to religion
i didn't do that, so no, i'm not bigoted
my standards of ignorance are: believing in a stupid outdated fairy tale because you're too damn lazy to think for yourself
i don't believe that, so no, i'm not ignorant
we are talking about america my friend, the religious right is having serious impacts on our country. as for buddhism people have killed in the name of it.
i know i sound extreme, but i really have no problem with religion as long as religious fuckbags keep their own fairytales to themselves and not let it affect public policy and the like. buddhist monks who keep to themselves are the perfect example of what other religions should do.
Anyone who believes that the pledge having under god in it is NOT a violation of separation of Church and State is a fucking moron.
Our morning announcements are in 2nd period and on the announcements is the Pledge. I have ROTC 2nd period. If I don't stand, I'm dead.
Hey, my name is Teeny McCool. I'm 17 years old and I think being an atheist is super rad. I try to argue about stupid shit like the pledge even though I actually don't give a shit because it doesn't actually offend me in any way. I also celebrate Christmas because I like being a hypocrite.
Signed,
Teeny McCool

DUUR HURR little kids can't make many decisions by themselves, let alone complex ones regarding religions, I'm agnostic and I hate when you faggot atheists try and bitch about stupid shit like this.
Don't you hate it when christians try and force their beliefs onto you?
You're doing the same shit, weather it be arguing about someone saying god bless you after you sneeze, or two goddamn words in the pledge. There's no need to push your beliefs on anyone, because everyone hates it.

Yeah all of that is irrelevant because it infringes on the kids rights sooo.
you guys do realize that the separation of church and state isn't a law. it's an idea that someone once said, and isn't official what so ever. people just like to say it. but i do agree that that should be taken out.
History lesson:
It's in the constitution
the constitution is the supreme law of the land.

You have parents telling their kids to believe in god, changing the pledge isn't going to do jack shit because theres to many other outside influences.

baww; get used to it.
religion is a bane upon the world.
i am simply saying that those who follow religion should not use these texts to justify policies within my country - i believe that is a reasonable statement.
i'm not saying that little kids can't make decisions, i'm saying they don't give a fuck and having "god" implanted in their subconscious is detrimental to our society
You have parents telling their kids to believe in god, changing the pledge isn't going to do jack shit because theres to many other outside influences.
Yeah it has nothing to do with that, it has to do with infringing on their rights.
Seriously are you retarded I can't make this more clear to you.
stop using that word wrong. I see you using it a lot in the wrong way.
^superficial
just to let you know, that's the establishment clause.
not to mention Thomas Jefferson was an atheist and the founding fathers hated organized religion.
You have parents telling their kids to believe in god, changing the pledge isn't going to do jack shit because theres to many other outside influences.
"under god" was added in the 50s, it wasn't added in 1776; it should be removed
moreso, most kids i talk to didn't even know that not believing in god was an option. getting rid of this "under god" will be a good thing for us all.

oh look at you, not knowing the difference between the establishment clause and the separation and church and state
If it wasn't for religion you wouldn't have justice (the band).

People in this thread must also learn the difference between rights being bestowed upon individuals as some sort of privilege.
and the inalienable human rights that every individual posses by virtue of their existence.
