Probably humans, but there is never any videos of people making crop circles. That means it's probably the farmers. But why would they ruin them like that? They would loose thousands of earnings.
In a universe where our planet does not even register as a speck of sand, aliens with the technology to travel space are not going to travel the enormous distance to go to a civilization as primitive as our to leave little secret patterns in crops.
Fuck, wrong thread!

Couldnt they earn it back by selling the stories?

If those really are aliens, then they might be so alien then maybe that its the only way they're able to contact us. Or it's a part of some big plan. Sort of like the manipulations Contact makes in ''The Culture'' novels.
It's not aliens you morons.
a highly fucking advanced race with the capability of very far space flight and the most imaginative thing they can do is make circles in fucking corn?

You obviously don't realize that their thinking patterns might be completely different from ours. If it's aliens who are making the pictograms in the crops of course.

If they are advanced enough to have some form of cloaking technology, and FTL travel, then I think that they would have done something more than what we can do.
these crop circles, do nothing.
In 1991, two men from Southampton, England, announced that they had conceived the idea as a prank at a pub near Winchester, Hampshire, during an evening in 1976. Inspired by the 1966 Tully Saucer Nests,[8] Doug Bower and Dave Chorley made their crop circles using planks, rope, hats and wire as their only tools: using a four-foot-long plank attached to a rope, they easily created circles eight feet in diameter. The two men were able to make a 40-foot (12 m) circle in 15 minutes.
The pair became frustrated when their work did not receive significant publicity, so in 1981, they created a circle in Matterley Bowl, a natural amphitheatre just outside Winchester, Hampshire—an area surrounded by roads from which a clear view of the field is available to drivers passing by. Their designs were at first simple circles. When newspapers claimed that the circles could easily be explained by natural phenomena, Bower and Chorley made more complex patterns. A simple wire with a loop, hanging down from a cap—the loop positioned over one eye—could be used to focus on a landmark to aid in the creation of straight lines. Later designs of crop circles became increasingly complicated.

Circlemakers.org, a group of crop circle makers founded by John Lundberg, have demonstrated that making what self-appointed cereologist experts state are "unfakeable" crop circles is possible. On more than one occasion, such cereologists have claimed that a crop circle was "genuine" when in fact the people making the circle had previously been filmed making the circle.[10]
In his 1997 book The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Carl Sagan discussed alien-based theories of crop circle formation. Sagan concluded that no empirical evidence existed to link UFOs with crop circles. Specifically, that there were no credible cases of UFOs being observed creating a circle, yet there were many cases when it was known that human agents, such as Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, were responsible.[25] Circle creators Doug Bower and Dave Chorley concur.
You're all saying "one cannot do that, it's too hard" etc. Have you even tried? Look at the great wall of China, the pyramids, the Nazca lines.. and you go banans over a bunch of crop circles, claiming they're "impossible" to do by hand?
Screw crop circles. Cow mutilations is where it's at.
I don't really have an opinion on this, but if some 'aliens' did it, there's no reason they'd not do this rather than something else due to an entirely different culture.

There is no reason for them not to?
Where is the reason for them to?!

k we get it you don't believe in aliens, just shut up already
I sure believe in life beyond earth, but not that they travel an unknown distance of light years to beam some fucking circles on a wheat field and then disappear without a trace.

Sure, it's made by university students that doesn't have anything better to do. They are paying the farmers money, which then allows the students to do whatever they want on a designated area.
The farmer can then if he want go out to the media and gain some fame.
Now, let's hear your answer, which I believe is much more logical than mine.
It is just young people who want to make jokes, nothing more. ^^

Who says they're super advanced? And AFAIK, FTL is not physically possible.
It might be some stranded explorer alien/AI/whatever that doesn't want to reveal itself so it messes with us by creating pictograms in an obscure way of communication. I mean, think about it, you're in the same star system as a bunch of aggressive aliens who constantly do horrible shit to each other and you have no way of going back home, what do you do? To reveal yourself in such a situation would be like jumping into a cave full of lions.
