Well my school gave our year an informal assessment involving 5 essays each on a different related text (of our choosing) most likely to introduce us to related texts. What sorts of related texts should I be looking at?
It depends what kind of stuff you like. You're not going to do well on a related text if you don't like it. Also, don't use what 99.9% of the student population is going to use.
For example, we did the poetry of Ted Hughes for Perspectives and we watched the autobiographical movie of Sylvia Plath. I didn't use that movie because it's what most students would use. Try to look into an entirely different genre and medium for your related texts. In this case, I used George Orwell's 1984. It suits the text well, I really enjoyed it, it had a broad spectrum of ideas to explore and most English students wouldn't use it because it's generally used in the Science and Humanity topics.
Also for belonging, look into children's novels or movies, like Tarzan, because they're often the ones that explores the fundamental ideas of Belonging. Or even newspaper articles, blogs, etc. You're awarded on choosing a text that explores the topic well and one that reflects your own opinion as well. So, what movies/stories did you enjoy as a child and how did they shape your perspective on Belonging?
You know how every belonging essay starts out, "Belonging is a fundamental need for human beings as proposed by Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs..." blah blah blah, which is what 99.9% of students are going to introduce their essays with, try something entirely different. Teachers often convince students not to start with a quote, so it's seldom done, but if you find one that's entirely relevant to your topic, texts and ideas, it'll pay off.
Creativity is also awarded. Not only in your short story, but in your ideas, responses, everything. If you're doing an interview, for example, don't interview a student about the texts. Why not interview a scholar, or the actual author herself/himself?
Try to think about what the markers will like. If they come across an actual entertaining and captivating response among the plethora of monotone templates, they're more likely to give you a good mark.

This is what happened to me.
I ended up pulling 3 all nighters in a row trying to finish my work before I had to mail it off to the marking center.
But, I did make my teacher cry so she did have a vendetta against me.
Oh, well.
