How is the scaling when comparing adv and standard english? Im in advanced right now and I hate it and my marks are medicore, but i reckon I could do better if I really tried harder. Its just that my essay writing isnt great, my essays are usually too short (on an essay where the average was 5-6 pages, i wrote a 2 page essay). Should I drop to standard?

The thing with scaling is that if you do well in anything then it's going to scale well. If you get above 95 in General- which should be easy- it should scale alright. It's just if you drop below a certain mark, say 80, that it brings the scaling down. I'd stick with Advanced, mediocre in Adv. is excellent in Gen. What are your other subjects and what are you looking to go into? Because my brother went into Mechanical Engineering and he got in with a 50s mark in Advanced- only because the faculty doesn't really care about English, only mathematics.
I've got: English (text: Life of Pi, Context: Whose Reality) Literature (Frankenstein and The Lady With the Little Dog and other short stories by Anton Chekhov) History (Revolutions: French/Russian) Media (Films: Crash, Sixth Sense, Dirty Harry) and International Studies to go.

I don't know what I want to do after school. Also what was the ATAR requirement for mechanical engineering?

Since you have an extension on Maths, that should up the scaling considerably if you're doing well, even if English is mediocre. Are you starting year 12 now? Then there's my Extension 1 English texts; The Spy who came in from The Cold, Waiting For Godot, poems from Sylvia Plath and two related texts. Then I also have Biology, French, Business Studies and Visual Arts. :suicide:
Go for standard english, especially if you have done one year of advanced already. If you feel like english isn't really your thing, its better to get good marks rather than a mediocre mark hoping to get scaled well.
you should probably all be plumbers
I have English Extension on Thursday, and religion on friday. Then finished, fuck yeah. I did extension 2 english but my work got sabotaged by my teachers so I didn't too great. I also did business, maths advanced, ancient history. Was good. Who here is in newcastle?
i'm so glad I dropped physics this term. would never have survived if i kept it. too bad i can't drop engineering as well. the formulas and working out in it get ridiculously hard. feels awesome being the oldest grade in the school though.

Already read Romulus my Father: I thought it wasn't as depressing as people I talk to think it was.[/QUOTE] That's kind of weird. What did you have instead of Business? I only chose Business because Philosophy wasn't being offered as a course anymore and I had to choose another subject. I should have chosen Drama instead; I could've written a play. Romulus isn't really that depressing. I really liked Gaita's writing style though.
Ancient History, fuck yeah Lakedaimonians
Snow falling of Cedars oh god. Polishing spears for Laecadominions. (I can't spell it but whatever) I miss the times reading random shit of them, their marriages sounded hilarious
3 Unit maths tomorrow... I'm gonna do terribly. Luckily I intend to do well in my other subjects to make sure it doesn't count, because it's my 11th unit. Anyone here do modern history? If so, how did you find the exam? EDIT: oops forgot modern history offered a million different options within each module. Anyone else do Germany, Speer, and Japan?
