its the "use of words expressing something other than their literal intention"
the use of it to describe something the opposite of what you'd expect in a humerous way, is not irony but is somehow seen as irony by everyone anyway
even wiktionary states this is an improper use, but goes ahead and has a picture depicting irony at the top in it's improper use. that would be ironic if i were to improperly use the term.
