The Airforce is actually a lot nicer than the Marine Corp. I know this because we have an ROTC program on campus and all the Airforce guys I know are REALLY REALLY friendly.
How conservative is it? The only thing I despise about most militaries is the extreme conservative attitude present.
is the canadian military like that too because MIPS is canadian
is the canadian military like that too because MIPS is canadian
Yeah I'm Canadian too, my cousin said the army was really conservative (fuck the fags praise jesus let's kill us some arabs boyos) but I don't know about other branches
really? canadians can be like that? i thought even the canadian rednecks would be a bit nicer
really? canadians can be like that? i thought even the canadian rednecks would be a bit nicer
Go to alberta sometime I'll secure you an evac I live in a prairie province so it's fairly conservative here as well, but at least up north where I am nobody gives two shits about anything.
I missed years 13-20 due to a surgery I was pulled out of school, I was so drugged from pain management...No friends No Social life whatsoever I'm basically trying to catch up. Sucks ass

Is it really that expensive to go to college in America? I am now in a electrical engineering course and the government pays me 1000 euros for it when it only costs about 500.
Is it really that expensive to go to college in America? I said fuck this and quit Morphine sulphate, Fentanyl, Percocet, Soma, Xanax...A few more...Cold turkey ( Means no medical help required and is supposed to be the most painful thing a person could do ) But I did it...I'm now taking Neurontin and it helps manage the pain to an agreeable level, And best of all I can go to parties and drink with that medicine and I won't get sick or killed by it..I missed all of my teenage years. Whoever is a teenager here...Cherish it. Would post pics of my scars and the bar as a trophy I have on my wall hehe....But it would be like Hijacking the thread. And to say it I can't make a good thread hehe.
OP: You were an air cadet for five years, you need a job that provides benefits, you need work experience form a reputable employer, you are unattached to anyone and everyone in your immediate vicinity, you need someone to teach you skills that can be applied in a modern work environment. It sounds like you need to join the military, bud. Assuming it is anything like the states, you will gain virtually everything you need. Just take a technical job with the Air Force. At best you will never leave your home base for anything other than training, at worst, you hang out at an air field in some (probably shitty) part of the world for a few months and make extra money doing so with combat pay. Once you exit the military you will have all the skills you need, a solid work history, and probably improved social skills.
Aww, Facepunch's personal military recruiter. "Join the military! What can go wrong? You'll see the world! You'll get skills!" You give the same damn spiel they give to those deadbeat high school kids, w/ all the pretty bells and whistles yet conveniently leaving out some of the more questionable aspects.

Will the pain from the nerve damage eventually subside or will you be on meds for life?
Yes, And Yes I will be on meds for life.
Sorry to hear that man, at least the drug you're on now doesn't seem to be that invasive. Best of luck
Threads like these make me thankful for my alright life. I've never been diagnosed with autism or anything of sorts, growing up in a stable family in a stable environment. I wish I could really help, but I can say is good luck, you're awesome, and you're not a shitposter.
MIPS, if you're still reading this thread, I feel for you, I know a ton of people who have found yourself in the same position. As per Gunfox's advice of joining the Canadian Forces, it does seem like a good option. I know a few guys that have done that out of high school. These guys live in Halifax, so I don't know what it's like here out west, but generally, they had all very good things to say about service. Though they were mostly reservists and techs. They said that there was not much of the "Hoo RAH lets kill brown people." and other such conservative values present
An average human works around 90,000 hours in a lifetime. Spend it doing something you like, not something you hate or even marginally dislike.
Jobs that pay over minimum wage are small in Vancouver. Things changed in the last ten years. You can no longer end up working for $20 an hour (even $15 an hour) with just a highschool education.
I don't "really" know how bad your situation really is. Trust me there are much more people worse off than you.
I can't fully express my situation as it's instantly bias. I can't also leave this job as I'm their current source of income. If I leave I reckon they'll have enough to stay afloat for another six months and then close their doors. Wal-mart is not hiring here and as stated before, I can't get much of a job with no education and to live in Vancouver you need to make a dead minimum of 20 grand a year. A single paycheck is normally eaten by rent, car insurence, gas, and bills. There is always about $75 left over for food and new clothes each month.
Well, if you really wanted to get into some current linux systems, you can thank the IEEE for the POSIX standard, which should make it easy, if not a walk in the park to learn most of what you need about it.
Last I heard, the linux group was assholes and don't like standards. You guys already fucked over Irix with your stupid GCC-isms. We can't build shit anymore. QUOTE=Kalibos;28813549]join habitat for humanity
Worked witht hem from 2003 to 2005. Got bored of it because it did not interest me.
1. You should stop focusing on this virginity shit, the great man Nikola Tesla did not seem to be interested in this stuff either, and he seems to have autistic traits/OCD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla 2. Since you are autistic (like me), the best way to improve your life is to create your own "rituals", things you do daily. I've started with doing a couple of pushups before going to bed, and it really boosted my confidence. 3. You do not want to fit in with the mainstream people, you are special and therefore you are awesome. People think you're awkward because they can't think out of the box. 4. Stop hanging out with furries and gays, they are also weird but you're not part of them and you do not want to be associated with them. 5. Post that picture of that room of you again with those old servers and shit
1: So I should jsut sit back and not sweat it? I know someone I sat next to in the elementary school special needs room who is already engaged AND has a baby. I'm doing something wrong. 2: I tried working out. I gained ten pounds and gave up because I doubt I'll be showing anything off. 3: I'm sorry but I do not buy the "You're special" line anymore. It's nothing more than self-esteem bullshit. 4: I know nobody else. It's unfortunate for me that everyone I know are clean drug addicts or alcoholics, gay, or furry. The most sane person I know lives in London and he's always rubbing in his IT job and his 90000 quid a year job. It was also a furry by the way who managed to help me locate this awesome apartment in Vancouver for so cheap. He also promised me the job I work at now. It was a now or mever thing and I'm sure that if I stayed with my parents for any longer, I probably would of killed them. 5: That was a bad time to ask that so no. Go find it yourself.
Learn to do web programming then make and maintain shitty webpages for homes businesses. Chaching.
Nobody wants just plain HTML anymore.
you need work on your coping skills if something doesn't work for you, deal with it or work against it [editline]26th March 2011[/editline] ask your doctor about antidepressants. go for jogs. work out. join clubs. eventually you'll meet someone who will want to be with you. talk to people more, and get outside more. you'll get better at talking and you'll be a better, happier and more sociable person.
I don't think I can work against the fact that I'm always fearing I won't make next month's rent while another person I know is equally as autistic, never finished highschool, and is originally american and has never worked a real job, yet receives $1300 disability cheques twice a month just because he's autistic. Son of a bitch. No anti-depressants. I was on medication for three quarters of my life and I am NOT going back. I also already take walks from my place on 35th out to the end of the airport and back. That's normally about a six hour walk.
Always thought you were a pretty fucking kickass dude. Don't worry, it could be worse, and it's probably going to get better. The incidents surrounding me and Digiclipse and IHM two or three years ago never reinforced this though as someone who was not insane. I'll never stoop low enough to buy a hooker BTW.
Hey man you'll be surprised how many people don't actually lose their virginity till their mid 20's, don't sweat it
I was being given dating and sexual advice from a girl who was 17 and had already had sex.
With MIPS' personality do you really think anyone would treat him with respect there? The military isn't very accommodating to people like him. (MIPS, this isn't an insult directed at you but at the military itself) If he thinks he can do it it would be great, but I have my doubts about whether it's the right atmosphere for him.
Zeke's got it here. I was almost fantastic at drill but I was still constantly harassed. While others were talking about aircraft and guns, I was talking about computers. I remember somethign that happened in the sumemr of 2006 when I was attending a six week Survival Instructor course in Greenwood Nova Scotia where I received a treatment to that guy on Full Metal Jacket. You know, the guy who later snapped and killed himself in the bathroom, only I didn't get a chance to kill myself, even when left alone to talk to myself in the woods for three days. I'm pretty sure though that some of the damage I took there was why shit went down two months later. I just still hate the fact that I'm knowledgeable in subjects that nobody uses anymore. I know that if S/3x mainframe administration was still actively going on I would of been trying to work for IBM in an instant but any attempt to reenter the computer hardware tech industry now would mean I ahve to relearn everything and with so much being so closely tied to software now (and not the software devs being confined to ahrdware) I would definately struggle. Software has ALWAYS been my weak point but hardware is where I was always at. I jsut wish I could at least have double the income on one job. With just a nice solid $1000 paycheck I could always know the bills and rent were paid, I could afford something other than rice and beef stroganoff and spam, I could actually buy clothing instead of raiding donation bins and for once, I could actually get out. My constraint to conserve gas for work and the high cost of the buses and SkyTrain mean I can only go somewhere out fo the ordinary once a week. The rest of the time I'm in my room at the apartment looking out the window and seeing all the things I could be doing. I'm still dead set though on suicide by 40. Once you hit that age you are entering a whole new ballpark in terms of relationships and it's not pretty. It's also not nice that I had to sit off to the side in my family while my sister sped onwards. Even before we moved to BC she was well known for her class speeches. Once here she became well known fo her roles in theatre and the community and has made appeaarances on television (one of which was oin CBC's Smart Ask), newspapers, and the radio. She is getting married this summer after she was asked if she would marry her boyfriend on top of the swiss alps while they were touring europe and is currently a nurse and lives somewhere in yaletown. She also has a room to return to back at home as opposed to me. Well, it's finally saturday night so I'll go have a few drinks. I'll not be posting anything else tonight.
shit sucks bro
Aww, Facepunch's personal military recruiter. "Join the military! What can go wrong? You'll see the world! You'll get skills!" You give the same damn spiel they give to those deadbeat high school kids, w/ all the pretty bells and whistles yet conveniently leaving out some of the more questionable aspects.
Actually quite the contrary. I won't have anything to do with the military personally because I can't trust any major federal government enough use my skills for the right reasons. Not because they necessarily are corrupt, or out of bizarre arrogance, but because the system is simply too large to be trusted entirely. State level governments are more acceptable and predictable, so I would consider state level law enforcement, but anything more than that and it is entirely too unpredictable. There could be another Iraq or Afghanistan where my efforts would, indirectly or directly, result in the deaths of innocent civilians. However, that said, I do not fault people for joining the military. Moving up the socio-economic ladder is EXTREMELY difficult and requires much more social connection than most people imagine. If you find yourself in a situation where you are poor and lacking the social capital to advance upwards, the military can provide both financial and social backing that would be nearly impossible to obtain otherwise. The world isn't black and white.
Is it really that expensive to go to college in America? I am now in a electrical engineering course and the government pays me 1000 euros for it when it only costs about 500.
Most colleges know in the States that to get a good job, or to even be considered for a regular Joe job, you need a degree. So they milk you for money for about the same level of education or worse as our European equivalents(And then boast we have a 'better' education). They also don't teach you specifics, they just teach you a broad base of education about the major you're going in. So you can know general knowledge, but to get specifics, you have to go back to get your associates, masters and phD. I'm basically government property at this point because I'm in such debt.

Just to see if she gets worried about how she looks or if she thinks I'm gay or something. Although that'll never happen, but I can dream.
I just still hate the fact that I'm knowledgeable in subjects that nobody uses anymore.
Be a museum curator. I talked to a guy on another forum (I forget where) a long time ago who said it was the best job he's ever had. I'm sure the world has a fair share of technology museums.
I just advise OP to keep his chin up. I have bipolar disorder, depression, Asperger's Disorder, and I used to be bullied relentlessly.

What also sucks: Youth/energy/health and time is the most expensive thing. It's hard to make up for it.
I was being given dating and sexual advice from a girl who was 17 and had already had sex. That point on its own was harsh.
So what? It doesn't matter what other people do or have done in their own lives. Don't listen to anyone who acts like having sex is some impossible feat for you to achieve..because it isn't. You don't need to follow some 100 step program to get laid, don't complicate it.
