In Japenese, all the letters have the same size and depending of it's writing will always be pronounced the same considering all the letters are syllables. The only tough part would be that they have 3 different alphabets.
In English, letters are differently sized, have capitals and are pronounced differently depending of the surrounding letters (Both I in "writing" for instance does not sounds the same)
Though I've never properly compared, sounds like learning Japenese from English is easier than the other way around.
I guess the difficulty in learning Japenese is the fact that it uses a completely different set of letters and symbols, which is extremly confusing and may discourage a lot of people. Other than that should be the same as learning an other language.
I doupt this is the hardest to learn to an english-speaking person though, Chinese seems to be the hardest considering that they had the "brilliant" idea of making a different/new symbol for pretty much everything.

I don't know if those characters are necessary to learn. It's probably the case. They based it on the Chinese I bet :v:
You best get started then.
There are 3 main alphabets; Hiragana, Katana and Kanji. (4 if you do consider Romanji though. Learning this is not entirely recommended, especially considering you already know English).
Here's the Hiragana alphabet laid out in a simple chart.
http://www.textfugu.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/hiragana-chart-textfugu-2.pdf
And something to help you memorize the alphabet.
http://smart.fm/goals/24666
This is one of the most basic forms of written Japanese and it is highly recommended to start with this. This is what Japanese school children learn to read and write with first.
If you feel confident and have memorized the majority of the alphabet, then you can move onto Katana, and lastly Kanji.
If you want to have some online help or a tutorial to help guide you if you are new, then this and this can help you. If Fishy is generous enough, then I'm sure he'll help if you ask.

did you just type all this out so someone can learn to read hatdragon porn comics
I appear to have missed quite a lot since I last was here. Ok, not that much...
did you just type all this out so someone can learn to read hatdragon porn comics
Is there any other reason to learn Japanese?
In A&E dragons, just as I start to get better, flatmate gets ridiculously sick.

I don't know why, but I read that and heard Ryan Styles say the words. Must be an overdose of Whose Line clips...
Also, Akatosh is awesome.
I approve of the gay dragon shenanigans ITT.
